Calf started to spasm coming down the track adjacent to upper Torc car park so I called it a day early. Left, and maybe 3 or 4 spasms. Right isn’t great either. Knew calves weren’t great and was half thinking of not running. I don’t think any major damage done but can’t see myself running this week.

Will finish this run another time but next attempt I won’t start where I did this morning, up that steep hill to start isn’t a smart idea.

2 laps of the Flesk

Cloudy today but felt warmer than the last couple of days which were sunny. Wasn't sure when I woke up if i'd be able to train, had a couple of hours of unexpected gardening yesterday afternoon, not used to the physical labour. Father-in-law turned up with a chainsaw and I felt obliged to help since it's my house.

Improved once i'd actually woken up and got this done, plan was 40km and needed an extra bit to get there. Trying to get a bit more distance in at the weekends so I can make use of the 20km radius next month.

Felt better up Crosstown the 2nd time around. Different garda at the Lissyviggeen on my 2 spins past it. Bike in front of me the 2nd time so that got me moving into town. I thought i'd been up Loretto Road before but according to Strava today was my 1st time. The 1st half of the climb is the harder part, some recovery, and then the last bit up past Brendan's place which is a bit easier than the lower part.

Descent down past the school was nice, straight enough and the road is in alright condition.

Reckon I might do some laps next week within my 2km zone for a change of scene. They are also on reflection good training.

Usual sort of 5km zone spin, up Crosstown this time

Weather sunny but cool.

The HR data shows that it wasn't a bad spin but some issues late on, blood sugars I suspected correctly were lower than ideal. Met the same cat on the road over to the Flesk in around the same place in both directions.

Garda checkpoint at Lissyviggeen today so some time lost with that in a short queue, main thing there is energy lost in having to build up speed after slowing.

Must try and do a bit longer tomorrow, maybe 2 long laps, will do some thinking about it.

Upper Torc

Lovely day, with some stunning views at the top of the run which I paused to enjoy for a moment. Beautiful running weather.

Calves got this done but don't think any faster would have helped them.

To make this more interesting I did some messing around with O-range last night, just trying to make a course with a few points along the trails I was going to run today. Failed last night, map I was trying to use wasn't working for some reason, something strange happened between going from Open Orienteering Mapper to Purple Pen. Basically saving a georeferenced template in a format that would export a GPX from Purple Pen. Came up with a workaround for my plan this morning, just edit the GPX with the co-ordinates of the points I wanted, which I did, and that worked.

The co-ordinates were from Open Street Map, based on junctions on that map, i'd to skip a few controls as they were out. Checking the GPS track against the points, they were a good bit out, but think my GPS may have been off for the 1st control. So probably a mix of basemap being incorrect and GPS in the forest.

In terms of feedback, my watch doesn't have volume/vibrate switched on so that was missing from the app for today. But gave me something else to think about on my run other than my calves. Maybe one way of training with it would be to use controls that i've visited before in Muckross and to use those co-ordinates from those runs, if i'm inclined, which is probably unlikely.

More or less the same as yesterday but did the bit on the other side of the Flesk in the opposite direction.

Cold on the bike today. Dry but glad of the clothes I'd on. The extra layer made all the difference. Not so bad once warmed up but that took a while, also glad of the cycling cap under the helmet.

Used some glue on the cleat on the left shoe yesterday, to reattach a loose bit, not that anything should be loose. It did the job today anyways and will last hopefully until new cleats arrived which I ordered yesterday afternoon. Hard to get the 0 degree float ones. Think I might look at right pedal too.

Out and back in the 5k zone with a longer loop in town

Lovely sunny day, but it wasn't warm, could have done with a hat under the helmet. Had layers about right as felt ok once warmed up.

Wasn't feeling too energetic today, some tiredness in the legs. Felt them more on the hills than on the flat. Happy with how I was moving though.

Think I need new cleats, left foot didn't feel right in the pedal, now that I remember seeing them last week the left one is more worn. Need to get a new rear light too.

Note
(rest day)

Body not feeling desperate but still could feel better. Calves are starting to suffer from recent training and no sign of a physio for a while yet i'd say. Left calf is also suffering since last Thursday's cycle, got 2 insect bites, from what i'm not sure, but bad bites.
