Killarney-Kilgarvan-Kenmare
Sunday Club Spin

18 out so a very big group. Not a bad morning, dry, but some damp roads, but better the road being damp rather than me.

As a result of the group the pace was a bit stop startish, but average was alright for the spin. 1st puncture was after Glenflesk, stopped for a bit, then went on to the turn before cycling back and getting the few that stopped. Then on to Kilgarvan.

Pace fine and was comfortable cycling with a large group, not much effort required.

Tea break in Kenmare. And then it was time for Molls Gap. A few early starters after the break didn't take too long to catch, so at the front there were around 5 or 6. Ended up going to the front in the open and stayed there until the top. Dropping people off the back bar one, but they broke within sight of Molls Gap, in the last few hundred metres.

Once at the top I went back down to find and help the slower lads up, although because somone else had a puncture on the way up it wasn't the slowest lads at the back.

Descent home wasn't full effort, with a few stop/starts.

Tired when I got home but expected that. Good endurance and a decent day for January.

*how did I forget to mention an eagle was spotted coming down from Mills Gap. Wondered why those in front slowed but it was flying high. First view for me I think, leaves me wanting more.

Torc!!!

Plan was get the old path after cardiac steps and ascend Torc from the lake side, then back to the car park on old Kenmare road.

Reality was slightly different.

Got to top of cardiac steps and found start of old path. Went on it a small bit and cross the steam which I remembered but immediately after there was a wall of rhododendron.

Turned around and descended cardiac steps. New plan was to try and find the other end of the old path and come back up it. Found the start of it which was a bit overgrown. Noticed some yellow tags on the path and reckoned it had been marked. After a few minutes climbing I didn’t see anymore but thought it looked promising the way I chose. Boy did I regret that.

Essentially what happened next was not pleasant. Ended up climbing upwards through a rhododendron jungle, no need to visit more exotic countries when a jungle is on my doorstep. Kept on climbing thinking will I ever get out or even be found. Came across a few cliffs blocking my way but got around them. I assumed that I had to reach the top at some stage! At least with rhododendron around there are plenty of branches to hang on to while ascending.

At one point it opened up into some very rough open and I could see both up and down, saw the small hill that’s on the Dinis map to my right and a peak way up. Decided to climb again. After more bashing through jungle i stumbled across the old path. That was a a sight I was very thankful for.

At this point I saw an escape and took it. Not long after starting on the path down I came across the markers. Basically I missed them at one point which resulted in the nightmare that was my morning.

Missing around 4 minutes from total time as stopped watch to text Mary when I found the old path to say I would be a bit later back than I anticipated.

Went back along the low path parallel to the road and then up the road by the waterfall.

While lost in the jungle I was thinking of never exploring here again but now that I know the path does exist....

No major delays getting home apart from buying dog bones and delivering bones to dogs who were without bones.

Got through this better than Tuesday so that's something. Started to get tired towards the end but kept going.

Muckross

Dentist to check last weeks work was ok, which it is, then had a stop on the way home, so started running a bit later than usual. Was thinking of skipping this, even though it was a short enough run, as the weather was really wet, but reckoned that I needed to avoid becoming soft, so out it was in the rain.

Actually enjoyed the run, although would have enjoyed it more if i'd worn gloves, was a small bit cold.

Cycling club registration later on, paid up for a racing licence, need to make more use of it this year, hopefully...

Didn't feel too bad doing this apart from in the last 5 minutes, started to struggle a bit then.

Note
(rest day)

Good start to the week, I managed to let the deer cross the road safely this morning at the same spot one ran into me 14 months ago! Saw one and slowed down and then the other crossed nice and slowly.

Monday - Physio
Tuesday - Turbo
Wednesday - Running
Thursday - Turbo
Friday - Rest (probably no time with dinner out and Pat Shortt in the INEC)
Saturday - Bike/Running
Sunday - Bike/Running

Sort of a plan for the week but it might well be impacted by what the physio says later. Legs feeling ok this morning though so hopefully nothing too bad.

Calves got a bit of work, and also right quad. Need to do a bit of work myself on it. Quad is a bit tight on the outside which is then putting pressure on the knee. That's what I felt the problem might have been cause by. Just need to spend a bit more time stretching and rolling.
