Note
(rest day)

Recovering today after yesterday. Morning would have been the time to do something based on how the weather went but decided that I didn't need to train.

Instead I started packing for my holidays. So some nice progress made.

Garmin doesn't seem to want to charge either. Would only need it for 1 race in the US but still annoyed. Will order a new battery when I get home and try and replace it. See if that works.

The Mike 'Iron-Man' Murphy Memorial Cycle 2016

Apart from a shower leaving Ballinskelligs it wasn't that bad a day out.

Cycle was for a cycling cause so a good reason to drive the hour to Cahersiveen. Lucky it was an hour as somehow I either didn't set an alarm or I slept through, most likely didn't set it. So when I woke up and saw my watch just after 8 I got a bit of a shock. Managed to get on the road for 8.25 which included making/eating porridge, and getting the bike on the car. Bag was packed though. Bit of a stressful start. And the buses behaved themselves on the road so I made good time down.

The lead car controlled the pace nicely up to the windfarm at Knockaneden and then down to Masstergeeha, so a relaxed start. Slight increase in pace then back to Waterville where there was a food stop after only 27km!

Was wondering if there was going to be a stop every 25km after that.

Once off the Ring of Kerry Road and heading for Ballinkskelligs the pace of the group increased a bit, so average was increasing. As we climbed out of Ballinskelligs I was at the front, wanted some space. Could see a big shower of rain over Bolus Head which then hit us. Decided to put on my jacket as wasn't wearing much other than a jersey, hummed and hawed about arm warmers before leaving the car but decided against them. Jacket was then inside out so lost more seconds getting the arms the right way. Then it was a chase back up the hill after the group. I didn't catch the front of it by the top. Wet descent then so took it a bit handy, but caught the front again in the Glen. They weren't going that fast.

Struggled on the section back to Portmagee, group was moving fast, down to about 13/14 riders now, into a strong headwind. Not sure why but wasn't finding it easy. Stopped then for more food in Portmagee. Sun was shining now so put jacket back in my pocket.

Got around Valentia fine but coming back into the wind along the coast road the pace was again high. A small gap opened so I went to the front of a small group of Killarney riders to try and maintain the gap. When I realised that the lads behind me had disappeared and I was only left with 1 it was then a matter of trying to close the gap. Ended up having to close it on my own, got very close just after Chapeltown but they kicked on, and I was in no mans land. No one behind me so cycled all the way from there home on my own. Had a nice tailwind back to Cahersiveen but the rises started to hurt, legs were now tired, but still had energy left.

Nice spin on roads I wouldn't be familiar with.

Note
(rest day)

Took the day off ahead of the long cycle tomorrow. Decided a bit more rest in the coming days would be prudent. There have been signs that my body is/was tired, so no point in being stupid.

Not the nicest of evenings. Damp for parts, with the worst part nearing home, into a wet headwind. But better than being inside.

Legs tired.

Had the pleasure of being asked before I left work yesterday to attend a meeting in Cork today, so took up a good part of the day, so had a few hours sitting in the car. Probably doesn't help.

But speed was alright over the loop from Lissyviggeen, faster than the last time.

Think i'll head to Cahersiveen on Saturday for a 100k spin, looks like an interesting route. And on unfamiliar roads.

*Extra - I see Nick ran 15.09 for a 5k on the track. Shows where I need to aiming...

Muckross & Bluepool

Somehow managed to delete activity off watch before saving it. Must have hit a button as it wouldn't be something i'd normally get anywhere close to doing!

So guessing at time and might have a go at measuring distance tomorrow.

Bit of a headwind on the way back, but drizzle seemed to mostly miss me.

Went over on my left ankle nearing my loop of Bluepool so that hurt a bit, was ok for a while, and then got sore again nearing the car. Rest of the legs weren't great at times, calves misbehaving, but not that badly. Might reconsider the running I've planned in the next few days, maybe switch a session for bike.

Body tired setting off, on my feet all day walking around Killarney, working. Not used to standing up all day.

So early on I went with the mantra that this evening was not going to be easy. Very humid too.

Decided to use the smaller ring on the climb and try for a higher cadence. Would be easier to spin the legs than try and power up using the big ring. And based on the time it actually didn't make much of a difference. So worked out ok.

Then on the descent I got past a few cars when they stopped at Derrycunnihy Bridge due to oncoming traffic, and again further down when the camper van that was leading the train got a bit stuck against another car coming up. Had been looking over my shoulder a lot as there was a bike just hitting ladies view as I turned around to come home, I was trying to descend faster.

Biggest issue with the spin was the road home. They'd resurfaced it, again. So lots of loose chippings to deal with, probably easier going up the hill home rather than down to start off with.

Note
(rest day)

Probably a good thing that it's physio today, was in bed early last night, tired. Still a bit tired today. Think the 3 days of training I did over the weekend has taken it out of me, combined with not resting properly after the race last weekend, one thing on top of another.

Monday - Physio
Tuesday - Cycling
Wednesday - Running
Thursday - Cycling
Friday - Running
Saturday - Cycling
Sunday - Running

So every 2nd day for running/cycling seems to be the idea for this week. Don't think i've anything else on. Next week will be a different story altogether, tapering for the US Classic Champs.

More of a service than anything else, there wasn't anything too specific wrong on the way in, apart from the calves being a bit tight after the weekend. And nothing new was discovered.

A necessary session though, legs hadn't been looked at in nearly 2 months.

Glutes were tight but suspected as much, have been neglecting them, keeping on thinking about them but that's usually when I can feel them.
