Tour of Sliabh Luachra 2016

Fun day on the bike. Pace was pretty quick to Millstreet, fast, but lead car controlled speed climbing up Mushera, thankfully! Feeling fine at this stage. The car did speed up at one point so had to do some work to hang on.

Then the descent. Struggled on this last year but did it a bit better this year. The bend after the junction cost me, didn't quite estimate the bend enough, so had to brake to avoid heading into the ditch on the far side of the road. Not a big issue, but cost me a few seconds. For the next few km I was working harder to catch the front group of about 7 or 8 riders. Eventually decided that it was too much so relaxed and then tucked in behind a Killorglin lad, joined by John Power then. His brother Hugh was up the road.

This small group got us back to the front one. So was a big group of around 15 heading up to the Sandpit House and from there to Boherbue. Roads here are tough to cycle, long drags. Thought the hill out of Kiskeam would be the worst of these drags ahead of the food stop in Ballydesmond. Pace was still fast, checked my average at some point, and it was nearly 34kph. Not bad going considering the climbing. Managed to stay with the group to Ballydesmond and a welcome rest. There had been some wind from leaving the N72, headwind, but being in the group made the difference.

After the foodstop we were faced with a short climb to Knocknaboul Cross but lead car kept things under control. Legs needed this to get back warm again after the break. From the Cross to Scartaglin it was mostly downhill and pace was fast. Was grand though. From the foodstop onwards we were passing other bikes pretty much all the way home, those doing the 55 or 85 km routes. On the pull up from the bridge to Scartaglin I think 5 lads went off behind the car. I tried to bridge across to them but gave up nearing the top, decided that even if I managed to bridge it would be a tough spin home from there. Ended up in a group of around 5 or 6.

Climb up Kilsarkan was long. Was pleased with how I was feeling, left the group I was with behind inside the last km, and they rejoined me on the descent. Tricky descent with bikes and narrow road. All got down alright. 20km to go now. But still more climbing to be done.

The lead car resurfaced after hitting the Gneeveguilla road, it had let the fast lads off. So tucked in behind that, then follwed one of the Killorglin lads, Brendan, who passed it out. We were working well up the hills, he was faster getting down them, but I was better going up them. The humpback bridge in Toormore was interesting, was probably doing over 60kph, thought I might get some air!

After that I saw John Power, himself and Hugh didn't stay long at the foodstop. John was sitting down at the side of the road. Cramp. I feel his pain, been there too many times before. He got a lift back from there. He was in good humour afterwards about it but did say it was a bad one.

The lead car again came by at speed. Found it tougher to stay behind it than what we were doing before then. Legs were now really starting to suffer. After Quarry Cross Brendan went again but neither I or the other 4 lads behind the car were having any of it. We did try to chase a bit but got held up with traffic in Gneeveguilla, match on. So that was the end of that. Keith got dropped before this. So it was me and 3 other lads the rest of the way home. Really was struggling to stay with them but just about managed it. Didn't have the power going down the hill. Really must investigate some improvements in that regard.

In my head I had us hitting the N72 in the other part of Rathmore, but we came out at the junction closer to where we started. Know this roads so should have known better, but was tired.

Think my legs handled the distance well at this pace. Didn't hang around afterwards, quick chat to the Powers, then home to get cleaned up in time for the match.

Board of Works-Killorglin-Beaufort

Club spin with a visiting Scot who'd done the ring yesterday. Busy chap.
Had considered parkrun as an option for today but after running Thursday I suspect I won't run again until Limerick next Sunday!

Bit damp leaving the house, but had dried up by Lidl. Not 100% happy with the legs today, felt tired, under a bit of pressure cycling hard on the way back to Beaufort, so wasn't pleased with myself. Not a good omen for tomorrow but i'm sure it will be fine.

Headwind heading west but benefitted from it heading home.

Stopped in the shop on the way home then, needed porridge for dessert later, making rhubarb crumble, so squeezed it into a pocket for the couple of km home. Felt heavy since I bought some flavoured milk for after cycling too.

Lough Guitane-Glenflesk-Barraduff-Killarney

Knew i'd a tailwind heading to Glenflesk so was waiting for the torture that would be the cycle back from Barraduff. Acutally turned out ok, some wind alright, but managed it.

Best news is that KCC have laid new tar on the approach to Barraduff. Brilliant, one of the worse stretches of road in Kerry has now been ad-dressed!

Knockreer Demesne

Well and truly pissed off now. Did actually text my physio earlier today looking for an appointment. But wanted to go for a run. It wasn't a pleasant experience. Not necessarily a truly painful one, but an uncomfortable one. Right achilles not in a good place at the moment, and hasn't been since I got back from Sweden.

Thought i'd do around 10km but decided to cut it short. No point if the enjoyment isn't there.

Bike is my friend, running shoes are not. Will do the sprint race next week and after that I just don't know. Some stuff i'd like to do on my feet but not sure.

Putting out controls in Ballyseedy

Did some replanning during the afternoon as knew numbers were going to be very very low, so saved myself some effort by reducing controls. No need for a 2nd course.

Putting out controls went fine until I got to the 4th last one, was supposed to be 84, but didn't have it in my bundle that was left. I knew it was there starting out so what happened to it?

Decided to put out the last 3, grab 94 from the car then, and start from the beginning retracing my steps. Didn't have to retrace my steps too far, i'd put out the control already but in a different location. Problem with OCAD, it had printed a number of extra controls on the map, ones i'd deleted, but had the same codes as ones I was using in different places. Think it printed 3 extra controls on the map. Might be a but of some sorts, will have to watch out in the future.

Felt very tired at work this afternoon. So was hoping to perk up on my way home in order to get a worthwhile spin in. Once on the bike no issues.

Thought Ladies View climb would go well. Although I've not been on the hills much recently, spin to and from work isn't that hilly. Time was over 11. There was a wind blowing so blaming that for the reduced speed as didn't think I was moving too badly.

Some fun on the descent. Caught up with a car before Derrycunnihy Church but didn't have the acceleration to get by them before the technical section ended.

Worked a bit harder back from Torc, concentrating on average speed. Doing the sums regarding distance and time I need to do to hit an average target keeps the mind occupied.

Note

Still think achilles is not where it should be. Must really get around to asking for a physio appointment late this week or early next week.

Monday - Jogging (Ballyseedy, checking map for Wednesday)
Tuesday - Cycling
Wednesday - Orienteering event organising so some exercise putting out controls
Thursday - Cycling
Friday - Running
Saturday - Cycling
Sunday - Cycling (Tour of Sliabh Luachra, looking forward to it)

So have a run pencilled in for Friday, but could swap that to Saturday if i feel like a parkrun.

Ballyseedy

Quick run around to check control sites and the map before Wednesday. All the tracks were still there, although a small one i'm not using has gotten a bit overgrown. So all good.

Managed to get Ór installed on my new laptop too when I got home so all set.

Gap of Dunloe

My parents are entertaining some German friends of my father, so it was visiting Killarney today. They brought the dog with them so someone had to mind her while they got dinner. So I took Lady for a stroll up the Gap of Dunloe as far as the lake, and then back. Showed some interest in the sheep, might be her australian sheep dog part, or else that she'd never seen them before. We don't have sheep in my part of Cork, it's cow country. Some rock climbing taking place on the cliff next to the road.
