Muckross-Kilcummin (via Port Road)-Lawlors Cross-Muckross (via Woodlawn)

Made it home from Wexford and felt like some training. Weather seemed ok too, some showers going on the way back and near Killarney but sky looked ok. Despite this being my so called "off season" I still am motivated to get out training on a daily basis, don't feel like missing days.

New route this evening, cycled it all before, but from home, and turned out to be a decent enough route. Some nice climbs and also fast sections. Happy with the average, the climbs were tough but some long periods where I felt like I was moving fast.

Legs felt good enough after a day off yesterday.

Thinking of doing some foot exercises too to help the achilles, might be a bit weak, like before I got this set of orthotics.

Saw a very dark cloud and a rainbow up beyond Kilcummin. It did get me slightly as I touched off it before taking the tight turn westwards for Lawlors Cross. Can't say I got wet though.

(rest day)

Off to Wexford for the night.

Had a good game of Tractor on the way down with Mary. I definitely won :-)

Think I might have killed a frog walking around the grounds of the hotel, can't say i'm happy about it, but wasn't looking where I was putting my feet down. Seriously good dinner.

Managed to escape the showers more or less. Some rain early on through Woodlawn but went away again. Did mean that the roads were wet though which was alright apart from one incident coming back in from Barraduff when a lorry passed and threw up a load of spray, that wasn't pleasant.

Felt like I hadn't been out this direction in a while.

Some resurfacing work done after Glenflesk but there are potholes in the road already!

Progress home involved cycling into the wind but didn't feel like it slowed me too much. Avg moving speed was 32.5kph which feels about right for this spin.

Right calf misbehaved a couple of times when put under pressure. Not sure if it's achilles linked.

Torc Mountain from the upper car park with Killian

They've resurfaced the Old Kenmare Road, evidence of which I saw out towards Galways Bridge a couple of months ago. So made the steep parts easier to get up and down near the start, less rough.

Pace was comfortable until a small bit up the climb and from there it was slow enough as my companion was struggling a small bit. Turned back a couple of times to let him catch up. His first run since the Tralee 100k Ultra.

Unreal evening with the sun shining, so great views in all directions from the top. Spent a few minutes at the top enjoying them and then started down the hill again. Didn't kill it coming down.

Achilles was a small bit sore but not too bad.

Up to Ladies View on what was a lovely evening. Nice to see the sun and to feel some heat on my arms.

Legs a bit tired at times but overall ok. Didn't feel fantastic on the main climb but got through it. 10.24 isn't too bad I suppose, not as good as back in July but it's been a couple of weeks. There was one big issue though above the shop as there was a couple of hundred metres of resurfacing so loose gravel. Ok going up but I crawled through it coming down. Meant I was a bit slower before I hit it coming down too as I didn't want to hit the gravel at speed.

Passed a lad on the way up and on the way down, he turned at the gravel. So slowed down for a chat with him for a small bit.

Post WOC session. Went ok, nothing too excruciating. Right achilles and the left one even though I can't feel it are still the main causes of concern. Calves i'm told were fine.

So same course of action to be taken, heat/ice and stretching.

At least i've not been advised to not run. But no serious running plans ahead, want to do interesting runs for the next few weeks, maybe go back and do some exploratory runs and/or mountains.

slept:7.5

Not the best of sleeps despite being tired going to bed, and definitely could've done with more sleep with how I was feeling this morning. But have work to recover in.

Serious training begins on September 1st so will tick over until then. That date is in my head, although I know that serious training will last 1 day before it runs into difficulty as heading to London that weekend. Also depends on how tomorrow goes what'll happen over the next few weeks. Will try and get some longer bike rides in to prepare for SHI long distance in September.

Mangerton is on August 23rd, do I want to do that? Maybe!

Out to get a bit of exercise after a few days of not training, not necessarily idle in those days but no training. Plenty of standing except for Saturday which was plenty of sitting.

Bit of a breeze blowing this evening, worst after turning off the main road in Beaufort. More wind nearing home but nice tailwind back from Beaufort Bridge to Ballydowney.

Legs not feeling too bad, achilles still noticeable at times, but not on the bike.

Plenty of traffic out and about. Wonder how the new cycling traffic laws will have an impact on my traffic avoidance, not like I cross white lines, often.
