Munster Novice Cross Country 2014, Tipperary

Can't say I was too motivated about this race. But ran to my limits I think. HR was there or thereabouts close to max for the race. Avg of 177 is alright, but maybe there were a couple of extra bpm to use.

Went off fast and then just tried to hang in with the lads around me. That didn't work out so well as plenty came by me, reckon I was around 12th after the first half a lap or less. So dropped 10 places from here. On the 2nd lap a couple of lads in red plus a guy in yellow/blue with bare feet and the odour of deep heat about him came up to me. Legs were also feeling tired around now. Stuck with this small group. Think one of these lads was Dooneen.

On the 3rd lap I got a bit stuck in the front down the starting straight, very strong headwind along here. Was concerned about using extra energy but didn't give it much thought.

Coming along the trees down low with around 1km to go I moved ahead of those 3 lads and gapped them slightly. Felt the boys in front were also coming back so tried to work towards them. Before the turn into the finish a UCC lad (I think) came sprinting past, long way out, but for him it worked. His pace was fast. On the finishing straight I didn't have enough to get the lads in front and the guys I was with weren't closing. With around 150 to go I noticed some lad sprinting behind so I went hard. Maintained my place.

21st is a bit of a drop from 6th last year. That is disappointing but I don't feel that I could have ran any faster today. Still ran sub 17 for 5k I think so that isn't too bad cross country. Course was one of the best i've run. Not much climb, more probably would've suited me, and no mud. Plenty of cow shit but that wasn't a hindrance. Wind was the only other issue.

Grass warm up/down 11:48 [2] 2.05 km (5:45 / km) +5m 5:41 / km

Warm-down with Tim. He was pissed after coming 4th, not with how he ran more with the fact that the U23s were there too so hard to know if they were novices or not.
The nuances of athletics!

Went to Cork to get my car back after its service and continued on to look around the City. Spent around €13 on cheese in the English market and some on olives too. Impressed with the cork spiced beef carpaccio I cane away with too.

Not looking forward to losing an hours sleep tonight. Especially since I don't really have a lie in as I've to get up for a lift from castleisland to tipp. Following through on my not asked for entry to the munster novice cross country. Not sure how motivated I am to race hard but having TheFlan on the start line too will surely spice things up, like my beef.

Team we have sounding alright so will have to see what happens.

Knockreer

Went for a different running venue this evening, can't say i've trained in this area too often, probably the road has put me off. Must explore the bridle paths a bit too to see if I can add some more off road.

Legs felt alright this evening.

Plenty of deer in the fields in the upper area.

Felt comfortable this evening. Had no idea how far I ran, just added some extra distance in at the end to bring the time up to 45 minutes or so.

Avg Cadence = 78rpm

Dropped the gears down and tried to pedal with a cadence that doesn't look too good. Looking at the graph it dropped off towards the end so I suppose I need to adapt to this type of training again.

Sweat was pouring off me at the end!

Started with Game of Thrones Season 4. Think I remember mostly what happened in the 3rd series.

Out a bit late as have time at work to catch up on and needed a hair cut. Put on a hat too to counteract the lack of protection from the elements on top. Not too bad out running, wore shorts rather than resort to trousers.

Wasn't sure about whether running was a good idea but felt well enough to go out when I got home. And felt comfortable for the run. Lungs under pressure on the hill but that's usually the case.

Tracks weren't as muddy as I expected them to be so that's a positive. Some branches lying around after the recent winds.

Very quiet in the forest, no one around, spotted 1 deer and that was about it.

Not looking forward to training tomorrow :-(

Physio 1:00:00 [0]
slept:7.5 weight:69.5kg

Haven't been to the physio since August :-) Pleased to be lasting so long between sessions.

Right calf was sore going in and improved afterwards but the assessment was that the left was tighter! I suppose I have concentrated more on the right as that has been hurting.

Knee pain from last week disappeared over the weekend and nothing found so that issue is resolved.

Physio is happy with how my legs have improved, some issues that were there in the past have now gone away. That is positive. But this is something to continue with and not get complacent about.

Entered MOC today. Looking forward to it next week.
