Trails warm up/down 7:31 [2] 1.0 km (7:31 / km) +16m 6:58 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: VJ Falcons 2014

Felt like I didn't sleep, ridiculous considering I went to bed very tired. Back a bit sore getting up too after the crouching through the trees yesterday.

Legs not feeling too enthusiastic jogging up the track to the start.

Orienteering 38:14 [3] *** 5.13 km (7:27 / km) +112m 6:43 / km
15c shoes: VJ Falcons 2014

3 loops

A - 11.45 - 1.71km - 30m
Didn't run this too fast, comfortable pace. Missed too, was enjoying running downhill and kept on going until I hit the stream, worked out that I was too far left. Tried a compass bearing to 4. Then a long track run to 5.

C - 11.29 - 1.58km - 56m
Upped the intensity for this loop, pushed harder. Nice forest run to 1, contoured to the right of the hill. 3 wasn't fun, tough uphill. 4 was a bit weird, steeper contours I felt and no crag, saw it to my right and checked it. Stayed in the dark green forest as it was lovely running. Then popped out just in time to get up to 5.

B - 15.00 - 1.84km - 26m
Long run to 1, went similar way for C to start off with but then crossing the stream with the crappy briars my direction was off so hit the wrong track, extra distance. Also hesitated near the control as the perpindicular wall was covered. 3 and 4 were shitty. Then getting back across the stream to 5 was rough, then tough climb out to nicer running in the forest. My impression of 5 was it was too far to the left.

Despite trying harder for C and B, A was my faster minutes per km, but it was definitely the easiest loop. Short breaks in between each loop.
12 PM

Orienteering 37:48 [3] 4.57 km (8:16 / km) +116m 7:20 / km
15c shoes: VJ Falcons 2014

Middle course on Florencecourt map.

Legs were tired beforehand but felt ok once moving, but was never racing. Went left to 3 and then ended up too high. 4 I made a balls of. To top that control off I also fell and had to stay down for a minute as there was pain, somewhere behind right knee but went away running. 5 was around by the road. Then a long leg to 7 where I again felt the control was too high based on my approach direction.

Getting to 8 wasn't easy, windblow. Boulder was small!

Then to 9 it was horrific, some awful briars to get through, not fun at all. Eventually got through.

Next few controls were uneventful. Missed 15 a bit, too far right, vague. Then just got out onto the road to crawl to the finish. Wrecked.

Good weekend of training.

Trails warm up/down 12:59 [2] 2.14 km (6:04 / km) +15m 5:52 / km

Bit of jogging around the car park with Hellsac before the race. 1st control looks easy:-)
Nice day for it, as long as the rain stays away.

Orienteering race 1:01:05 [5] *** 11.51 km (5:18 / km) +132m 5:01 / km

Northern Ireland Orienteering Championships 2014
Castle Saunderson

My 1st visit to NIOC since the SHI in 2009, 5 years is a while. But then again 84 days since my last orienteering event is also a while.

From having seen the map I knew it was going to be a running type of course. Typical Irish orienteering, path-control-path, and repeat times 26!

Was a bit hestitant towards 2 as I was trying to work out the 2 roads.

Overshot the path in to 5 by a second or two.

Had some time early on to look at 6, and decided to use the road to the right in order to avoid the contours going past 21. Fastest but not sure if 2nd fastest took this route.

Got a bit stuck heading in to 8.

Then heading towards 10 I spotted a GMOK top on the track and caught them at 10. Didn't know Hellsac had started in front of me, otherwise i'd have been gunning for him sooner.

Out to the track and back in for 11. Didn't find the ride from 11 to the open, then got stuck in shit. Eventually got out. Then got stuck on the fence trying to cross into 12. Not a good leg. 40 seconds lost to Conor.

But got that time back on the next leg as Conor went around but I went over.

Cut through the light green to get across towards 14. Picked up Mark around here, not sure how long he hung on for as I wasn't looking behind. Didn't plan ahead too much with the company.

Heading into 17 slightly too early. Took a gel before this for the laugh.

Overshot 22 but used the drain as a catching feature.

Back up the hill to 23, slightly left of it but used Hellsac.

Then down the hill and some hard running to the finish. Put the head down for this and tried to use whatever energy was left. Kevin was running strongly here.

Happy to take the win.
Now what to do with the bottle of beer prize???

Battle for the remaining podium places was funny based on Hellsac taking the ride off me :-)

Not the most pleasant of areas, printers would have run out of green after doing those maps.

And the warm-down too with Hellsac up around the House and back to the car park. Legs very tired...

... and i've got a sprint relay to run after the prize giving!

Sprint Relay

Ran 3rd leg.

So did Loop C and then started on Loop D straight away afterwards, felt this would be best for my very tired legs.

No real issues, just the wheels came off towards the end of the 2nd loop, really badly. Very dehydrated for some reason.

Never spotted the path through the green or 4-5/9-10!

C - 0.8km - 4.04
D - 1.11km - 5.46 (30 seconds slower min/km, showed the tiredness)

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

Not feeling fantastic again but better than yesterday. At least that's a positive regarding this weekend.

At least I got to bed early. Roll on the long drive in the morning.

Been a rubbish week training wise but maybe the body was telling me something.

Feeling a bit crap again today so another day off. Having a great week of it. Maybe cycling last night was a bad idea afterall but isn't hindsight a wondering thing.

Rest and then race on Saturday.

84 days at NIOC since last time orienteering, that has to be a recent record!!!

Around Killarney

Noticed no HR as I cycled down the hill, stopped to adjust the strap but looks like a dead battery as watch isn't picking it up either, checked that when I got home. Despite HR not being particularly important this evening it still niggled away at me.

Wasn't really sure where I wanted to go this evening but did find it a bit chillier than recently while out cycling. Ended up at the 20km mark at 40 minutes cycling so that was kinda what I was looking to do.

Road down from Ballyspillane to the Park Rd roundabout was a bit bumpier than i expected, was a bit concerned for the bike as i'd picked up a bit of speed.

Feeling better today but was uncertain whether training was a good idea or not. Will run tomorrow now and see what happens.

Another day of feeling off. Not right after the weekend, overdid it. But will be recovered for the weekend, i'm confident of that.

Note
slept:6.5 weight:70kg (rest day)

Last night was horrific, was in bed at 11 all set for some badly needed sleep but it decided not to happen till at least 1230. Was wondering where I could get my hands on sleeping tablets, and if I took them would I wake up when my alarm went off.

Monday - Rest (was planning on running but rest might be sensible after the weekend)
Tuesday - Running
Wednesday - Running (intervals)
Thursday - Cycling
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Orienteering (NIOC)
Sunday - Orienteering (training)

Slightly concerned about going orienteering on Saturday, my last race was the WOC relay!!!
