Muckross

Plan was to go for Torc Mountain but decided against that due to the dampness. Was the rain I don't like, light dirzzly stuff but constant. Was like that when I woke up, improved, but then got worse as I headed out the door. So changed my plan to do usual route plus more. But confirmed that decision in the open area through Killegy House as there was no sign of clearance.

Felt ok running today, legs felt comfortable early on, some soreness on the left knee. Didn't struggle too much up the hill, lungs have improved since last week. Then didn't like the descent. Met a few scouts with maps, hillwalking maps, at the top of the hill, they were trying to work out if they were turning left or right. And down then around the usual loop.

Back then up the hill in the opposite direction. I pushed this at around 80-90%. There was a strava segment of sorts to improve on, so wanted to do that, and test myself in the middle of the run. Happy with the climb, did get the segment. Was tired at the top but HR came back to normal levels quickly enough. Then kept on to the left for some extra distance and then home the usual route.

Ended up at an hour running, was hoping for that as the run went on, and would have added extra running if I hit the road at less than an hour.

Event: ALOT 2014

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

Another day on my Stats course in Dublin. Last day of lectures. Was galling to be on Lansdowne Road but not in the Aviva. Match was still on when I left and could hear the crowd while waiting for the Dart. Has increased my desire to get to a rugby game in the Aviva.

Then had the drive down to look forward to. 3 hours from the Red Cow to Killarney.

Dublin traffic sucks. But did manage to get a run in this evening, would have been better with more light. Will elaborate on the run when I write it up. Sort of tried open orienteering map, not to orienteer, just to find a route and keep things interesting.

Corkagh Park

Downloaded a map from Open Orienteering Map. And used that for my run this evening. Started a bit later than i'd hoped but got around the run in mostly brightness, only dark for the trip home. Spotted some permanent orienteering controls during my run so maybe if i'd done more research I could have downloaded that too.

Was different using phone as a map, and the map wasn't the best in places, but I got the idea.

Ran on grass at times, there seemed to be a few trails created on the grass around the edges.

Legs were a bit on the sore side.

Driving to Dublin this evening so no training. Bit wet en route but uneventful. Long day of lectures on the cards tomorrow but possible run on the cards later on.

Glanageenty (Long Lap)

Bit on the damp side this evening but not too bad. Started off at the barrier and had to avoid a fallen tree or 2. Felt ok running on the road. Then descended to hit the small path along by the river, leaving the open area and into the forest.

CARNAGE!!!

It was really really bad in there, fallen trees all over the place, path completely blocked. Followed a new little trail that people have created since the storm but only got as far as the river. Got over the bridge, not easy, and after that the damage lessened. Started on the ascent then after the next bridge. Felt ok up to the road and then kept on climbing.

CARNAGE!!!

Basically every tree at the top of the hill was on the ground so path obliterated again. Climbed over a few trees and then spotted a few green tags hanging off the standing trees lower down. Missed them on the way up but wasn't looking for them. They lead back to the path.

Then off out of the forest and onto the extra loop. The big hill wasn't easy, i'd hoped to try and push it a bit, but all the gates that were open last time I ran here now have bolts and were closed. So had to open each one and close it as I went along, killed momentum a bit. Think i'd to open around 11 or 12 in total by the time I got off the mountain. Path has been improved in places.

Then onto the road for a bit before dropping down to the river again. The path has been seriously improved along here, shale surface which I'm not too fond of. At least I was able to keep going. Then back into the forest and up the usual hill. Legs didn't like the descent though from the top, knees were sore here, both of them.

Then back into the last section of forest before the end but more trees down here after the drop down to the path through the middle. At least i'd Inov8s on, runners would not have been helpful.

Can't see myself running here again until the paths are cleared.

Note

My girlfriend won a hamper of biscuits from McVites on facebook. I'm very upset.

slept:7.0 (rest day)

Out west for the afternoon and evening, didn't get home until around 10.30. Talk about above and beyond the call of duty! At least I get TOIL. Was tired when I got home. Legs also felt tired in the morning but perked up after a good lunch in the Marina Bar. Will go there again if I need a feed in Dingle.

Start of another week that's not going to be solid training wise, again. Maybe once this week is over that i'll be able to put some consistent weeks together, including some intervals, need to improve on my speed.

Got an appointment for next Tuesday to get my foot looked at, but not going to ease off in the meantime, as my training plan for the week shows there's no point.

Monday - Running (Muckross)
Tuesday - Rest (in Dingle all day/evening working)
Wednesday - Running (intervals or Glanageenty)
Thursday - Rest (travelling to Dublin)
Friday - Rest (in Dublin for course, but might bring gear with me just in case)
Saturday - Rest (in Dublin, 2 days this time, and travelling back)
Sunday - ? (some sort of training, running I presume)

Muckross

More or less same route as last week. Stuck to the grass by the road where I could. Knees were sore but felt a bit better once warmed up. Eventually got running after a haircut and a quick visit to the chemist.

Didn't have calve trouble after yesterday, expected some bit of a reaction after that big climb up the steps yesterday. Pace slightly faster than last time I ran so that's something.

Very smug when I finished. Just as I opened the boot of the car there was a serious shower of rain, extremely heavy. Was very happy to have finished when I did.

Off to Dingle to face the Irish speaking public of Kerry tomorrow, "NĂ thuigim".
