Note
slept:7.5 (rest day)

On my way home from Turkey, in Stockholm at the moment. Lots of snow outside, but I hear it's cold in Ireland. Weather was lovely this morning as we left antalya, the Swedes were standing on the runway basking in the last bit of warm sun they'll see for a while.

Body actually doesn't feel too tired so thats a positive, obviously getting used to 2 sessions a day. Lookout forward to going training again but will start the week with a couple of easy days as will be tired after a long day travelling.

Not looking forward to starting a new diet this week. Will start with dinner tomorrow as food before then will be hard to source gluten free.

Selge

What an area. Probably the most unique terrain i've ever run on. Roman ruins and a huge amphitheatre on top of a mountain. Then from starting there into terraced fields hidden amongst massive rock formations.

Lost some time on the course but generally never got going, ran as a training run as the body wouldn't move any faster. Brain definitely tired too.

Was just a pleasure (at times) to be orienteering in such a place. Great way to finish the week in Turkey.

Right knee was a bit swollen afterwards so decided an afternoon training session with Boris and Ross wouldn't be a good idea.

WRE Sprint

Just went out to give it what I could. No major mishaps, a few moments of bewilderment as things happened very quickly on this course. Paths, bushes and trees everywhere.

Was confused in the start box with regards to what descriptions to take as there eas E1 and E2, with the 1 crossed out with pen. So I took both and checked what the code for 1 on the map was, then discarded the other.

Some definite hesitations on the course but no major mistakes, didn't take the best route to the last control, went right instead of left and was hesitant in doing it.

Very pleased with the result, 1075 points. Best ever and in a Sprint. Has made me reconsider my priorities this year. Will go to the JK and see how I do in the Sprint there and then decide if it's something I want to do more of. The shape i'm in is obviuosly having benefits for faster orienteering.

Mass start intervals with Neil, Andrew, Ross and Boris. Started in the old town with some urban orienteering. Was running ok, joint 1st on the first interval. A bit slower on the 2nd interval, started well, but lost some time missing better routes and got confused towards the end. On the 3rd interval I was behind Boris and then on the long leg to the last control I was running fastest.

Then we went into the roman ruins outside the town which I didn't like. Not sure what it was, too rough maybe, but just couldn't get moving and was struggling to figure out what was happening at times. Bad 1st interval out here.

Was fastest on the next interval though as it was more open running, sand dune type. Then onto the last interval where I was leading after 3 controls, then hit the old ruins again, and that was the end of me.

Overall time includes warm-up and warm-down. Mass start definitely helped the body to push harder, as was 2nd session of the day. Not the nicest of afternoons in Turkey. Very different to be orienteering in Roman ruins.

We made a new friend this afternoon, one of the local dogs. Definitely has talent as he picked up the orienteering very quickly, doing well on all the intervals, and he did punch the controls, wasn't taking any short cuts.

Race started well, body felt ok and was able to push. The training that we'd done in the various areas had helped with regards to coping with the area which was nice and fast, lots of ups and downs too. The first 11 controls were going fine, a few seconds lost here and there but not bothered with that. Knew there was a long leg coming up so had done some planning for that, my only problem was that I started running the long leg a control too early, forgot about 12!!!!!

What a stupid mistake. Was checking my codes going to the next control and realised something wasn't right, i'd missed the control so turned around, that felt great, especially as I was moving well. Found 12 alright.

Then started the long leg again.

Lost a few seconds deciding I couldn't find a way through the green to 16. Then lost a heap of time to 18, think I lost around 4mins at this control, more than I lost messing up 12.

So a bad day at the office with some horrific orienteering.

The map isn't the course I ran, didn't have my variation when I collected my map, so 7/19 is 3 and then 8 is 4. 3=15 too.

Line course with Neil, Andrew and Becca. My body was not there today, did not want to be running at all. Yesterday I suppose along with 18km on Monday taking it's toll. Ended up with Neil as Andrew and Becca pulled away. Neither of us moving at all well. Some nice parts to the map but others were boring enough.

Neil had a contours only map but I went with a normal map.

Control pick on a forested sand dune area, looked like a golf course and to prove that I found a golf ball on the way to the 2nd control.

Again my my was un-responsive but it was moving better this afternoon. The problem with this area was the water. All the flat parts on the map had a couple of feet of water! So the controls on the flat area weren't fun. A guy was running ahead of me so that was helping my motivation.

At 19 I met Andrew who'd found a tortoise so I stopped for a second. That was to prove my downfall. Lost all motivation here! Decided to skip a loop back through the water so did the controls on the contour area on the northern side of the map. Got to number 27 and the body gave up.

Walked back all the way, my legs wouldn't run for me. So i'd orienteered for 5.94km and 44mins, then spend 32mins walking for 2.42 km, much of it through water. I did have to give up at the furthest point from the parking.

Sprint training this morning, not sure my lungs or body is up for running fast. Relay training this afternoon and after that my body will be very tired. Need that yellow thing back in the sky hiding a small bit this morning but running in only an o top is a positive feeling.

Good idea to forget to weigh myself before I left, these buffet meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) are adding up. Haven't had the opportunity to get stuck into a kebab yet though.

Only 4 in this mass start. Messed up the first control in the park, saw Boris in front of me cross the bridge so went after him, not my control! The 1st control was gaffled this time, smart Darren.

So was following the lads to 2 and then up to 3. Ross went a different route to 5 and I got ahead of Boris and Neil. Punched 6 close to Neil I think and then I opened the legs to 7 and 8, finishing first.

Course length was 1.2km.

Sort of a chasing start type start. I went off last. Took a circuitous route to 1 but other options weren't as good. Was going ok until I got near the control and saw Neil in front of me so started after him, down the wrong street!!! I realised pretty quickly that I was wrong. I took a bad route to 4, thought the control would be a level higher, so came from above rather than below, Neil got ahead here. Ran strongly for the last couple but damage was done.

Course distnace was 1.1km.

1-man Relay, mass start with all of Linné. Good fun.

Back to the same area as yesterday afternoon, didn't feel like it took as long to get here today. And a nice afternoon for running.

Got the first few controls fine, running with Ross around or ahead of me. Then to 4 we'd a different gaffle so didn't see him until the area around 6 which I was slightly right of.

Made a right balls of 7, in the circle but control was on the ground so didn't find it. In hinsight i'd overshot it slightly hitting green on the stream beyond it but didn't cop that. As I found the control the girls were coming into the control and Ross was long gone. Lost a bit of momentum here but picked it up again after 8. As I headed towards 10 and 11 I saw Ross in front again so upped the pace to catch him. To 13 he went right so I followed his line to discover that wasn't the way I wanted to go for my control. Knew where I was though and passed out Ross. He was behind me at 14 so I pushed hard to 15 and didn't see him again.

Was fine through the last few controls to be first back:-)

Course distance was 5.2km so not too far off straight line.

There was a 2nd loop to the relay so we did it as a warm-down. Ran together with the lads and were passed by some very fast moving Swedes.

Note

4 sessions in and the legs are tired. Will need someone to drive the car home for me on Sunday. Relay training this afternoon was very good on teletubby land. I had fun beating Linné too.

After my chest feeling pretty dodgy over the weekend I was sceptical about how the running would go. Decided to take it easy enough and didn't really struggle for breath. Think i've gotten lucky on this one. Maybe the warmer climate helped.

Started off with a jog from the bus to the start. Then grabbed a map for one of the loops, A. Had a problem with the 2nd control, was in the place, on the ridge and could pick up the features between the ridge and the road, just couldn't see the control. Finally found it. Rest of the loop was grand.

Again had trouble finding a control on Loop B, the 5th control, in the right place but couldn't see the control.

On Loop C i'd the 5th control from B as the 3rd control, no time lost this time. Number 8 was very vague where I used other orienteers as a guide. Hit the big spur which the control was on and met a few runners running from my right to left so went on the assumption they were looking for the control. Turned left and there it was. Not the most intelligent of plans.

Got the last Loop, D, done fine. An Austrian lad was running ahead of me so I probably ran this kinda fast.

Area was a bit grotty in places, undergrowth from low bushes or brashings. Not that difficult an area to start off in and it was a nice morning for running, had a layer debate before I started with only 1 winning and it was the correct choice.

Contours only map. There was an option for a normal map but went with the contours only. The organisers described this area as tellly tubby land. Reason I assume was the round hills covered in grass, there were trees though. Really nice place to run around. Struggled to find the contols at times but that was really my only problem.

Got stopped by a couple of Swedes early on as they were looking at a tortoise.

Overshot 14 but from there to the end I ran nicely and didn't push myself. Did see Neil and Ross ahead of me at times so tried to stay within touching distance of them as pacing.

The course distance was 6.6km and i've gone with Garmin elevation.
