The Foxes Rock (Carlingford)

Niamh made out start times, so Conor was 6 minutes in front of me and Thierry was starting 6 mins after me. Plan was to see how far I could get before being caught.

Got route to 1 ok, but dropped past the crag missing the control, so lost time figuring out where the control was. I knew I was in the right place but just didn't get the crag.

2 was an easy leg, spotted the line of crags, but problem with it was the climb. Leaving 2 I wasn't sure what way the hill was going so initial direction was off. Went high along the fence then down past the fence corner. Contoured to 4, passing 7 on route. Then again around the hill to 5. Ended up a bit high for 6 and as I left 6 Thierry came bounding over the crags. I kept ahead of him to 7, but ended up slightly left and hesitated. Leaving 8 I went around the hill, having kept an eye open going to 5. Got 8 just ahead of Thierry. Our routes diverged slightly to 9, with me chasing Thierry now. Stuck with him. Then there was a tough climb to 10. I don't know how I missed the control, if i'd just opened my eyes, so lost Thierry here.

11 was again uphill, body was really suffering by now after yesterdays exertions. Again between 11 and 12 there was more climb, aimed right of the hill. Passed Josh, Kieran and Brian Corbett around here, having passed Rob McEvoy earlier. Got 12 spot on and also 13.

Spotted Conor when I was going to 8, so checked my watch to see if I was gaining, pretty even, then saw him again at 12, i'd gained. That gave me some impetus to push on. Ended up high for 14. Then got a bit confused leaving the control before realising I could run downhill for a change. But messed up 15, saw a big boulder but was too low. Ended up having to go back. Then more climb to 16 before the last few downhill legs.

Crossing the fence before 17 I caught my foot and hamstring started to cramp. Had cramp issues in other muscles earlier in the race but not as serious. Didn't hold me for long, got 17 then down the hill to 18 and the finish.

Pleased with the result but not the performance. Glad to have survived after yesterday. Some epic weekend of orienteering/running. When I got back to Killarney I could have done with some help to get out of the car.

Lukes Mountain and Meelmore

The distance and time includes the run from the car-park to the start.

Ended up a bit higher on the spur for 1, but 2 and 3 were fine. Some amount of climb between 3 and 5. The contours only part wasn't a problem. Then there was the long leg to 11 with Anton passing me on the way, could also see Allan ahead of me. They were ahead of me in the control pick but I caught up with them when they missed 15 and finished this section ahead of them as they missed 21.

Then onto the corridor, didn't know where I was for the first couple of hundred metres, good start, nothing made sense. Once contact was gained it was fine. Got the control half way through but again immediately after it I couldn't make sense of the map/terrain again. Took another bit to rejoin the corridor.

Up Donard and Back from Meelmore. My Garmin died a horrible death. Will correct the time/distance/climb when I get them off someone else who did the run.

Epic.

What a day to be in the hills.

Orienteering race 6:49 [2] *** 0.8 km (8:31 / km)

Tollymore
Micro Sprint A

Took a while to get into this course and the map. Then when I got to 12 it hadn't been put out! Never got my time adjusted for this. Never really got moving, legs too tired and knee was also sore (right).

Orienteering race 5:13 [3] *** 0.8 km (6:31 / km)
20c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Tollymore
Micro Sprint B

Much better effort 2nd time around. Ran faster and orienteered more smoothly.

Orienteering race 5:19 [3] *** 0.8 km (6:39 / km)

Tollymore
Micro Sprint C

Running time was again good, but had to add 30 seconds due to punching the wrong control. It was at number 12, saw this control on the tree as I ran towards it, but dot was on the other side. Tiredness maybe affecting concentration, or else maybe i'd the map held the wrong way around! Not too pleased with getting the control wrong. Didn't matter anyways, no way I was making the final, nor did my body want to. I'm happy it actually got around the 3 courses.

Driving north after work. Should be a class weekend, not looking forward to Monday though as i'll surely be wrecked!
Body is almost better today, stomach not feeling too sore and abductor is now not noticeable walking.

Stomach is still sore, as is abductor! So think my core might need some work, but maybe a more gradual build up to higher intensity punishment.

Watched some of ProjectX, around 45mins of it, so 2nd half to watch next week.

Saw my consultant yesterday afternoon, must have been about the only time ever where I was seen in that place on time, usually waiting for hours. And didn't have to pay for parking either, woman leaving next to me gave me her ticket and wouldn't accept money off me for it:-)

So the tuesday after the Munster Champs i've been booked in for what I think is a 2 or 3 day holiday, in the Bonnes!!! Doc reckons i'm a bit uncontrolled so that needs to be addressed.

Glanageenty (Long loop)

Wet day so I knew that the trails were going to be bad, due to recent weather too. The only really bad section was the bit below the road, the higher area was alright, wet in places but ok to run. Decided to go the long loop as I felt the sticky stuff would be good cross country training. I also wasn't too pushed on running too hard, core is sore today and so is my right abductor, not too comfortable with that. Stretching does me now favours!

Saw a herd of goats, around 10 of them on the steep climb up, they were eating the cows in the field grass. Also met one of John Lenihans dogs out for a walk, on his own and not really going anywhere.

The path coming back was very slippy in the trees, muddy, and grip was non existant. Then came into the fields and was running between them and the river. That was going fine, got plenty of mud from the squelchy bits. In my mind I was wondering where I could get access to the river to clean afterwards. Then I came to a fence corner and the entire corner was under water, ran/waded through it, it came half way up my calves, so deep and cleaned my legs.

Felt ok on the climb back up from the river and then the descent back to the car wasn't too comfortable due to the legs.

Was at the chemist before going running, as I waited for my stuff, I spotted a fragrance that we saw advertised in Finland, James Bond. Around €20 for the smaller bottle. But I didn't bother to see what it actually smelled like.

slept:7.0 (rest day)

Gone with a rest day for the time being, but not sure yet if it'll stay that way. If I get out early I might go for a run, or if I don't then robrunner has suggested an intersting alternative, hmmm.

Core 1:00:00 [0]

Went along to the CorkO tuesday night class. All on flexibility and some conditioning exercises. Did the class, not easy figuring out what I was supposed to be doing or doing it right. But can't have been bad for me. Chances of doing the exercises in future are probably pretty slim, nothing wrong with them, just laziness on my part!

Recovery spin, legs tired but not overly so, could easily have gone running but recovery on the bike instead, weather a bit windy/showery too!

Watched first 2 episodes of My Name is Earl. After getting a lend of a Media Player so have that hooked up to the tv, there is some serious amount of movies/music on the box and some tv series too. There are years of viewing on it, think I might invest, the 3tb version rather than the 2tb that i've got the lend of.
