Muckross Arboretum
Wasn't sure if I was going to run even when I woke up but fed up with sitting on my hole so went and gave it a go. HR is quite high for a run that I didn't kill myself doing, so shows the body isn't right. So a few days training needed this week to get some sort of shape back.
Started alright, handy 1st control, track junction! Then 3 was on the path when it shouldn't have been. Missed 4, bit blind. Then had trouble at 5, didn't see it, but found it after coming back from relocating, in my head i'd read the map wrong so maybe 1.30-2.00 lost here. The next few controls were fine but might have saved a couple of seconds at 8 by cutting in earlier. Based on QR feature is in a different place to where it is on the map.
10 was a bit weird, control was sort of lying down so I picked it up and stood it up properly. Wasn't sure it was right at the time but based on distance ran after it towards 11 it was probably alright. Then 11 the path hit the track earlier than it should have so map wrong. 12 was ok. Then went straight to 13, others went around but split was good.
Then there was 14. I couldn't find it! Came at it straight which was probably not a good idea. Went under the crag, no control, checked descriptions, top of crag, so went up the path onto the top of the crag, no control. Looked at the next crag, up and around again, checked behind a few bushes, no control. So decided to keep on going. Went via finish on way to 15 to tell them control was missing. Then got the last short loop.
At download other finishers said they'd got 14 so I went out again to look for it, no sign. So came back to the finish and got a lad to come out with me again to show me where it was. The control wasn't even in the circle, at least 100m from where it should have been, and nowhere near the top of a crag! I believe comments were made at the finish that someone on the brown course (me) couldn't find the control but all those on the yellow course which had the control found it! Lucky there was technology issues or I could have been down on the results as a DNF. I got to upload the results so changed the DNF, and did the same for robrunner. It's orienteering, not a treasure hunt.
Nice run around Muckross today nonetheless, warm and very little climb on the course which was nice. Don't think my chest would've liked climb.
Course distance was 8.1km so did a good bit more than that.
