Track warm up/down 18:37 [2] 3.45 km (5:24 / km)
ahr:145 slept:7.45 shoes: Mizuno Waverider 14

A few laps of the track to warm--up. Bit different to last year, it's on, and the year before with no ice on the track. Brought my spikes onto the track.

Goal Mile

Ok so i'd been saying that I wasn't go to go fast but changed my mind! The first mile was won in 5.34 and the second was around 6, so was hoping to get the fastest so far. On the start line we'd to wait for Jerry Ford to start, and then 3 lads rocked up that looked like they knew what they were doing, so that kinda impacted on my mentality, especially when they went off fast, from aiming for around 5.30 I decided to see what I could do.

There were 3 in front of me on the 1st bend, then I passed the 3rd fella and tucked in behind the 2nd fella, in an orange top. The guy in front was a lad by the name of John Shine.

Similar story for next couple of laps, same positions, and pace still good. First lap with the extra bit of track was in the low 70s, don't know what the other laps were like. There was a bit of track slalom needed at times, people who may not have been too serious ran in lane 1.

At the start of the last lap John Shine pulled away, and I passed the lad in orange on the inside, he left a gap. I then put a few metres into him and kept on running. Hit 100 and pushed, tried to put what i'd left into it. Heard the announcer say that John Shine did 4.57/4.58. I crossed the line in 5.02 so was very happy with that.

Body didn't feel too stressed running, I reckon it's hurt more other years, so definitely pleased with my time. Probably a few more seconds that I can gain in the next few months with training. So next year i'll aim for a pb. One reason I didn't want to run fast today was that I felt I would run slower than I wanted and be disappointed as a result.

Now lets see what I can do tomorrow.

Track warm up/down 4:42 [2] 0.77 km (6:06 / km)
ahr:143 max:171 shoes: Puma Track Spikes

Short warm--down along with more stretching.

Note: Just to show how stupid Garmin is, Garmin Training Centre is telling me that I had 17m ascent and 16m descent for this warm-down. Garmin Connect with elevation correction enabled correctly said 0m, it was a track I was running on, you'd hope it is flat.

Right leg feeling a small bit better, funny feeling still there though. More stretching today and then running for a few days. Wonder if I can make club cycle on the 28th, hmmm.

Not much on today, just chilling out in Killarney at the moment, and home to Cork this afternoon, in time for dinner.
7 PM

Note

It's only Christmas Eve and i've eaten some amount of food today, had 2 mince pies eaten by lunch. Then a Milano's pizza for lunch followed by dessert. More pizza at home for dinner with chips, and now i'm getting stuck into some white cake which i'll follow with christmas cake.

It's break-up day:-)

Part 1 - Munster Bar for tea.
Part 2 - Lunch in Town
Part 3 - Quinlans for the afternoon (no cursing or you'll be asked to leave)

So won't be training today. After many years of trying to run as fast as I could for the mile on Christmas Day, i'm thinking this year of taking it easier, aim for a 6min mile, and focus on running fast in Belgooly. But will pack spikes just in case I change my mind.

Was pretty stiff getting out of the car this morning after driving to work. Legs not feeling too bad, probably more pain last week, abductors not sore this week. Hamstrings need stretching and so do calves. Bike tonight will make 7 days training in a row, hasn't happened too often recently due to sickness issues. At least i'll have tomorrow and Christmas Eve to rest. Although if i've time I might get up on the bike on Christmas Eve.

Got a text from the Chain Gang last night, Christmas spin on the 28th at 10 which is supposed to be a rest day. Wonder if I can fit it in...will have to see about that.

Legs felt ok. Watched 2nd last episode of Game of Thrones, Series 1, wasn't expecting the end of this episode, but will have to wait until at least next week to see what happens next.

Now time for some rest, right leg feels funny, for some reason I think today it's after getting longer, but it's just some disomfort around the top of the hamstring.

1 - 5.34
2 - 5.42
3 - 5.42
4 - 5.42
5 - 5.58

Much better session tonight so pretty happy with that. I knew that we went hard for the first mile, but knew what I was facing into this week and didn't tear off. Particularly pleased with the middle miles, all 3 the same time:-)

Last mile didn't go so well, 1st lap was fine but got a pretty bad stitch for the 2nd and 3rd laps, before I pulled it together to push for the last 300.

Small bit of wind blowing on the back straight so that made it different to last week. Legs are sore now, stiff in places, so need to stretch a bit before bed if I get the long list of jobs i've to get done out of the way.

Glanageenty, 1 long lap

On my own tonight, Gerry fell off his bike last Sunday and has physio tonight but nothing serious. Didn't feel too cold either but some light drizzle falling. This drizzle turned into fog on the higher ground which made life hard as the run went on. Battery on the torch was running a bit low so only had the 10w bulb as 20w wasn't lighting too much after 10mins running. Nearly ran into a donkey at one point, this white beast materialised out of the fog and it took me a couple of seconds to figure out what was in front of me.

Then met a dog, have met him before, barked last time but didn't seem too bothered tonight, he was on his own.

Last part of the run up at the top was hard, really struggling to follow the path, went off on a bigger track first, and then went straight on at a bend soon after. You'd swear i'd been drinking. Last part down through the woods was also tough, just unsure of where I was going. Based a lot on memory of what way to turn next.

Was pleased enough with the time for the lap when I finished as I felt I wasn't pushing. Want to get the body back feeling normal again when running, get the HR down and back to what it was like before the illness crap. Legs also felt ok apart from some tightness in left calf, so happy about that before tomorrows fun on the track.

slept:8.0

Monday morning and it's looking distinctly damp outside. Nearly christmas and pretty much know what i'll be doing for next couple of weeks. Can't remember ever having all of Christmas off from work this year, usually have to work 1 or 2 days, but must be because Christmas falls on a Sunday the days are transferred. Next year will be a different story with public sector changes to privilege days:-(

Monday - turbo trainer
Tuesday - running, hopefully with company (preferably glanageenty)
Wednesday - intervals (track)
Thursday - turbo trainer
Friday - Rest
Christmas Eve - Rest
Christmas Day - Goal Mile (thinking of taking it easy this year, save myself for Belgooly)
St. Stephens Day - Belgooly 4 mile road race
27th - Currabinny, corko christmas orienteering event
28th - rest?
29th - ?
30th - ?
31st - ?
1st - 10k road race in Beaufort?
2nd - ?
3rd - run with company (ballymac/glanageenty)
4th - intervals (track)

Christmas doesn't look that long when you write it down like that.

Pleased with how the legs felt on the bike, pedalling was easy, so need to start increasing the resistance over the next while.

Watched 3 more episodes of The Inbetweeners, saving Game of Thrones episode for Thursday.

Will I do some core tonight, been meaning to...
