The Crags

Shit session, my own fault, fucked up blood sugars (again) so didn't get the benefit from what is a great area. Wasn't on the craggy western slope, was on the northern bit, didn't make it as far as the western slope. Uphill start which I managed fine, then a flat area. Got a bit confused on the long leg to 6, mist came down and head couldn't concentrate, so bailed. I did have to stop on the way to 2 to crack open glucose tablets, top few in the tube had turned to powder which was interesting.

Pissed off that I didn't make use of what would have been good training. Hmmm. Will definitely go back and run this course in full after WOC I suppose at this stage.

Tralee-Dingle (via Conor Pass)-Tralee (via Annascaul)
Avg Cadence = 77rpm

Easy spin out with 2 mechanical stops. So that broke things up as it took a while to speed up after both stops. Then we hit the climb. There was 4 of us to start off with, single file. I hung back as I wanted to conserve some energy for the end of the climb. We then were down to 3 so I took the lead. Then Rob took over for a bit. I then lead a good section towards the end before Rob and Donncha took off with around 750m to go to the top. Didn't feel the need to push on so took the last bit easy. Then floored it for the descent. Passed out 1 car on the way down and caught up with another. Enjoyed the descent, max was 66.6kph!

Stopped for a bit in Dingle before we headed back as a group. Just before the straight section after Dingle Racecourse Donncha put a burst in which split the group. I went with him with Rob, Barry and Colin. Christo was there too but he lost the wheel in Lispole. It was single file all the way at a descent pace. I felt it wouldn't be long to get us back. The hills were tough, there are a few pulls. On the descent through Camp I lost a few metres to the lads so i'd to push hard to catch up. After Camp we stopped at the Railway Tavern for Donncha to point out what not to do with gears. He then suggested a pint, so the lads had 2!

Then it was back into Tralee at speed. Disappointed we didn't do Slea Head today but the mechanical lost us too much time. Maybe next Saturday...

Note

There's a 150km cycle on next Sunday in Ballingeary, a nice few climbs on the route including the Healy Pass which is on my to-do list.
Thing is there'll be a club cycle on the Saturday so will do that first. So could be a lot of cycling in store for me next weekend. The distance could come in handy for WOC I suppose but i'll see how the week turns out.

slept:7.5 (rest day)

Spent all day in the car being driven around South Kerry having a look at the landscape, another tough day at the (outdoor) office.
Looking forward to a long spin on the bike tomorrow. Not looking forward to an early alarm call.

Coomloughra Horseshoe

Nice handy walk with Eoin (from work). Tough job i've got sometimes. This was one of the better days. We reckon that we'll need to go up annually to monitor the track situation! Nice day out too. Clear and no real wind, clouds but stayed above us. The cloud did close in on the way down from Benkeeragh, but cleared again shortly afterwards.

Tralee-Castleisland-Farranfore-Castlemaine-Tralee
Avg Cadence = 76rpm

Sensor seems to be back in action. Not a bad evening, dry for a change, and the wind was only bad near Farranfore and Castlemaine. Didn't kill myself tonight. There was a big group tonight, mix of some fast and some slower. All pretty much stayed together, the split just after Farranfore was short lived.

After Castlemaine a group of 7 of us pushed on, as expected. We stayed together with Rob setting the pace. Nothing too fast. After a while things singled out with me in the lead but not pushing. Then Rob took over again and injected a small bit of pace. With around 2km to go Sean took the lead and increased the effort. The group of 7 was now down to 4. With 500m to go to the top I tried to get ahead but Rob tore off and so did Sean. Didn't want to fight so eased off. Caught the 2 lads on the descent. We then scared the shit out of 2 cyclists by coming inside them on the second hairpin, they weren't expecting that, or the pace we were going.

Back onto the flat we kept a decent pace, but effort eased slightly. Looked like the sprint was on. I went first, just increased the pace passed Rob, he tried to respond but I kept him at bay, then Sean came outside me at speed which i'd no answer to and then Rob had another go and went passed. I called it a day then as I didn't have it in the legs tonight.

Will rest tomorrow, lads are doing Slea head on Saturday, so that'll be 150km on the bike, which will be good WOC long training.

slept:9.0

Tomorrow is going to be a hard day on the body.

The working day (9-5) will be spent walking up and around Carrauntwohill, not a day off, it's for work. It can be a tough job sometimes. So will get expenses for the drive there from Tralee, subsistence for being out of the office, but there's no mileage rate for walking!

Plan on being back in Tralee for cycling at 6.30 so that could hurt after a days walking!

Gougane Barra
Training
Running distance was 6km according to my Garmin so ran an extra 1.3km compared to the straight line. Will do a QR in the next few days, maybe Friday if I get a chance.

Really enjoyed myself this evening, was nice running and having a map in my hand. Missed number 4, overshot uphill! So didn't go back down. Planned some controls in the area that wasn't really mapped, the highest part of the map, so went up there for a loop then back downhill. Thought 16-17-18 were some tricky downhill legs.

Danny and Rob turned up late so i'd left them a map under my wiper. I then waited for them afterwards. Will be interested in comparing my training this evenings to Robs when he posts it.

Glanageenty
Long Lap - 32.42

Gate closed when I got there, something about planting, and open forest policy not applying monday to friday, so decided to ignore that and just went running.

First lap went ok, didn't feel like I was doing anything too strenuous, taking it handy I felt. But a couple of little aches here and there, nothing too serious though. When I got to the end of the lap I did stop to do some stretching, calves and quads.

Started off again for a 2nd lap but as soon as I did my chest felt caught and breathing was harder than usual. So decided the chest must still be suffering after last week so turned back and headed home.

The weather again this morning is shit. Will cycle later, on the turbo trainer if needs be, run tomorrow (Glanageenty) and o-training on Wednesday. Cycle thursday night with club. Friday I imagine will be another run. Saturday morning I hope there's a club spin on the bike, long. Might end up resting then next Sunday.

Chest is getting better, so this training is all on the assumption that i'll be able to train.

Turbo Trainer 40:32 [2]
ahr:97 max:106

Avg Cadence = 74rpm

Nice and easy on the turbo. Have a couple of sore muscles, mainly somewhere in the left groin. Either run or bike tomorrow, proper training. Since it was recovery I read a book, starting a new one this evening. Weather was crap so no chance of going outdoors, finding it hard to believe that it's July, looks more like November apart from it's bright after work.
