Orienteering warm up/down 25:46 [3] 1.75 km (14:43 / km) +230m 8:53 / km

Parked at Dereenacullig and went uphill to No. 8 on the World Cup mens course.

Orienteering 55:57 [4] **** 5.13 km (10:54 / km) +199m 9:08 / km

Crohane Mountain

Ran a few controls from the Mens WC 1998 Course. Started at 8, then to 9, 2 extra controls, then 6-5-4-3-2-1-7-8. Was a bit high for 5 but was at the attackpoint I wanted. Then on the downhill before crossing the stream and marsh to 4 I checked my HR on the watch and it was around 130, next thing I know it's 237. Used the tried and tested method of putting my hand on my chest and I could feel my heart beating pretty fast. So walked then towards 4 and HR still wasn't coming down. Sat down at 4 to give myself a rest. All told my HR was 200+ for around 4 minites. Dropped to 90 then so I started off running and it was avg all the way to the end. No clue what happened, whether it was my heart going funny, or the monitor gone wonky.

Orienteering warm up/down 14:46 [3] 1.87 km (7:54 / km)
ahr:138 max:155 shoes: VJ Falcons 10

Run back down to the car for the finish. Easier going downhill than it was coming up!

Gougane Barra

Short legs uphill, then downhill again. Much more runnable than this morning, no snow for a start. Was a bit hesitant at the 7th control, but map is vague enough, descended the hill carefully as I knew this control was going to be tricky. Next control I overshot slightly but plenty to relocate off.

Orienteering warm up/down 7:38 [2] 0.95 km (8:02 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 10

Includes jog up to the start and the jog back down the track to the car afterwards.
10 PM

Note

no real training plan this week apart from running and turboing, on alternate days I imagine. Rest day if I decide on a physio session. There's a few sore muscles after this weekend so will see how they are tomorrow on the turbo.

Trails warm up/down 11 [3] 1.0 km (11 / km) +56m 9 / km

Run up the track from Ross an Crua Lua to Crohane Lake, then along the track to the start of the World Cup Qualifier.

Orienteering 1:32:17 [4] **** 8.83 km (10:27 / km) +244m 9:11 / km

Crohane Lake

Ran first 13 controls of Mens A qualifier course for 1998 WC race. First 9 controls were fine, maybe a bit unsure at 4/5 and veered a bit left between 2 and 3. But after crossing the stream and heading into the jungle things got tough.

It must be mentioned that there was snow on the ground too, a few cm's of it, just to make things more interesting. It was very very rough between 10-12, 13 back wasn't so bad since I'd done that leg recently when checking the area. Really rough otherwise. I could send the Brown Course to these controls for the ML event in March but may be killed afterwards if anyone actually made it back.

Time and distance includes 2.4 or so km back from the end of the lake to the car, around 15 minutes running, which isn't bad.

Tír na Spideoige

Ran the brown course from the event I planned there in the Spring of 1998. It was won in 53 minutes by Brian Corbett.

Didn't do too badly until near the end when I think low blood sugar and tiredness meant I messed up the 2nd last control, short leg so shouldn't have done that, lost concentration. Took the track to the 1st and also between 2nd last and last control, thought it'd be easier, to warm-up and cool down that way.

Crossing the marsh was tough between 5 and 6, wet and rough, other than that it was a nice run. Also a bit unsure coming into the common control for the butterly, came up on it unexpectedly.

Note
(rest day)

Took a break today but actually didn't feel that tired. Would have been a nasty evening for running so good call, sleet was falling.

Going to be a class weekend, going training tomorrow with Swedesport on some local terrain, and more training on Sunday. Swedesport is doing two areas a day. So all going well, I will too.

I will also enquire as to why Swedesport hasn't been updating his AP log in recent weeks.

Turbo Trainer 45:27 [3]
ahr:126 max:150

Avg Cadence of 85rpm.

Started watching Memento, is on the laptop for some reason. Probably should have stayed on longer but didn't want to kill myself, not that I would, but have had a good week or so of things, looking forward to a rest tomorrow.

Garmin said I burned 1236 calories in 45 minutes, wow, at least that means dessert after dinner tonight was compensated for!

Trails 53:09 [3] 10.7 km (4:58 / km)
ahr:147 max:167 shoes: Mizuno Waverider 13

Blennerville (The Spa + The Basin)

Legs felt sore in places to start out with, meant to do some stretching before I left work but forgot! Stopped after 10mins to stretch my calves but didn't really get anything. A lot calmer this evening too, so it was nice for running. I think it's also starting to get brighter as I didn't need my head torch for a while, unless I started a lot earlier than I usually do.

Once I turned at The Spa l upped the pace a bit, since I reckon the fields is where i'm losing time but not intentionally. Had no problems anyway. Turned at The Basin and I switched off my torch, didn't feel I was getting much light from it, turned it on again a few minutes later and it wsa brighter, so battery is running low.

I ran 10 seconds faster tonight than last night but my avg HR was 147 this evening compared to 154 last night. Think I can explain this by running steadier this evening for longer but last night I ran faster at the end.

Now, to go on the turbo trainer tomorrow or take 2 days rest (definitely taking Friday off)...???

Note

Body feeling tired today:-) But will give running a go after work. If I can run today and tomorrow, a rest will be deserved at the end of the week before the weekend. Nic is around and is going training so will do some of that.

Also considering whether a trip to the physio would be a good idea, get the legs looked at. Will see how today and tomorrow go, might delay it until next week, save it for a birthday treat!!!

Trails 53:19 [3] 10.73 km (4:58 / km)
ahr:154 max:169 shoes: Mizuno Waverider 13

Blennerville (The Spa + The Basin)

Slight breeeze blowing meant it was a bit chilly to start with, especially as it was into my face. Body felt a bit sore to start, left achilles the main niggle. Improved as the run went on though.

Felt ok but a bit tired after a while, especially on the way back along the canal and into the Basin as I raised the pace a bit, down to 4.20min/km or so. Eased off at the end to warm-down. Needed to do that anyway to keep the time consistant! Body feeling ok as I write this at 2340.

Run or turbo tomorrow...???

Turbo Trainer 1:13:06 [3]
ahr:116 max:145

Avg cadence was 89

Bit damp this morning so scratched cycling idea and it is only around 2 degrees outside so this was the better option rather than freezing my balls off on the roads.

Pleased with the time I spent on board today but need to improve my concentration. My time had to be adjusted manually from the Garmin time as I forgot to start the watch, but since I knew where I was in the film when I actually started the watch it was just a matter of figuring out the difference.

Finished watching StarTrek.
