Orienteering race 48:11 [5] *** 9.2 km (5:14 / km) +80m 5:01 / km
20c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Doneraile Forest Park

Legs didn't feel too bad this morning and the plan was to try hard, no point in relaxing since i've a rest day tomorrow.

First few controls went fine, even got a chance to do some planning ahead. From 6-7 I think the path might have been a better option, the cross country route was scrappy. Then when I got into the circle for 7 things went very badly. Was in the right place but no sign of any control. Had a look around for a while and eventually found it. Probably lost up to 3 mins here so not pleased.

Stopped on the track by 8 trying to figure out what I was looking for, cut in and there it was, nice. 9 was easy and then uphill to 10. Overshot so lost around 30seconds coming back down. 11 was ok and then didn't take the best route into 12 since it looked overgrown. 13 was fine. 14 I cut in across the stream but when I hit the shallow gully I thought control was to my right due to distance, it wasn't, so time lost here. 15 was easy and so was 16 once i got across the stream.

There were 2 options to 17, I went left, got the fastest split but that could have been down to running speed rather than route. 18 I lost a bit of time getting to, including getting caught on a big briar which ripped open my leg. Good speed to 19, the last control and to the finish.

Overall i'm pleased with my run but 45 would have been doable f it wasn't for 7!

Garmin said I ran 9.34. Forgot my HR so not pleased with that.

Note

To run or not to run, that is the question!

5k in the morning, thought I wouldn't, but now i'm thinking I will. Stretching at the moment feels ok, and legs were fine after running tonight. Will have another think about it over breakfast...

Road race 17:01 [5] 5.0 km (3:24 / km)
ahr:184 max:187 slept:7.5 shoes: Nike Road Racing Flats

Feet First 5k Series, Race 1

Set my watch for 3.20min/km. In hindsight not the best of ideas as last 1.5km was tough going. 3.25 might have been better, but still happy with time.

The race started on time so nearly got caught on the hop with a trip to the toilet so missed getting a good starting position near the front but on the outside and cross country on grass got me going nicely.

After around 500-1km the runners spread out and bit and I was running with around 2 other lads, as the race went on one of these lads pushed on and another lad came back to join. I just hung on for dear life.

There was some rain before the start but it started dry. At the 3km mark it started to rain and there was a bit of a headwind, not pleasant, but i'd say for last km the wind might have been at my back.

Really started to hurt as the 2 lads I was with dropped me, should have pushed harder to stay with them but only lost 20m to start which went up to 50m near the end. It was chest rather than legs that started to suffer, possibly due to not recovering fully yet from last weeks illness. So didn't do too badly. A couple of lads started to catch up with me near the end and I did my best to keep them at bay, succeeded.

Was worried about hurting afterwards, calf and achilles but this evening I think they are ok. Must just recover for orienteering tomorrow now, which will involve more running than orienteering.

1km - 3.18.70
2km - 3.16.54
3km - 3.24.90
4km - 3.21.59
5km - 3.31.45
And an extra 07.22 from where my watch took an auto lap to the finish.

Road warm up/down 15 [2]

warm-down, included a couple of hundred metres on grass with a dog on a lead.

Glanageenty
1 long lap, with a run to the end of the forest road and back

Weather not too good today so my brainwave of cycling this morning was thwarted. Had running gear packed just in case so ended up using it. I actually don't think i'll run the 5km anyway in the morning so chose this place to run.

Tracks were slippier than last time so runners didn't do me any favours. First hill was tricky and parts of the path back towards the forest caused some trouble.

Didn't feel too good on the second hill, but did my best to keep going. In the open area there was some rain which wasn't nice, could see the shower coming in the distance, but didn't last too long. It was sticky in places so runners were not the best choice of footwear, Inov8's would have been better, or my new Icebugs would have enjoyed it.

Into the deciduous forest, and I was running fast. Ground here is hard and had leaves on top. The first level part was fine but then on the last stretch downhill to the car, I slipped on some leaves/mud and hit the ground. Managed to catch my right hand on a tree on the way down and sprained a finger, bit swollen and sore.

Note
(sick)

Cold is still lingering but nearly there. My chest didn't feel too good yesterday before running but feels good today, would running be a cure for a chest infection (if I had one)?
Body not feeling great today though, stiff/sore around my shoulders and neck.
Will run tonight to see if that makes things better/worse?

Still undecided on running that 5km on Saturday. Will need to make a decision on it tonight as if I don't run i'll train tomorrow, if I do decide to race then tomorrow will be rest. Doneraile on Sunday too to consider, main thing is what shoes to wear.

Blennerville + The Spa

Body feeling better today but some aches this evening so not sure what's going on. Anyway managed to run fine. Felt ok, and legs weren't complaining. I do feel there are some issues there so in a dilemma about whether to race on Saturday or night. I have decided to train tomorrow no matter what I decide to do.

Tonevane, out and back plus the loop

Had enough laziness so time to run tonight. Chest not feeling right but about time I tried it. It survived the run but I think that my HR was above average so that's probably not good. I live to tell the tale though.

Met 4 people out walking up here this evening, bit strange for an october evening.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Again another day of rest but tomorrow things will change as I plan to run after work. Still not 100% today, but chest is improving slowly, still a bit of a cold too. So i'm presuming there will be more improvement overnight to allow me to train tomorrow.

Plan for the weekend is a 5km race on Saturday morning and orienteering on Sunday in Doneraile, 9.2km, so should be pretty wrecked come Monday. That is if I feel up to things. If I don't race Saturday i'll run out in Muckross, long uphill.

(sick) (rest day)

Still not better!!!

Getting a bit fed up at this stage, cold ain't the problem anymore, it's the chest. Not convinced about going to the doctor as they may be reluctant to give me drugs, would probably need to be a bit worse. Will see reassess situation tomorrow as I'm not liking this inactivity.
