Solemsasen

There was a course on the map but I started from the parking area north of 11. Went to 11-12-13-14-7-6-8-9-10-11.

Marsh between 14 and 7 was nice running, as was the other big marshes. Lost time at 13 looking for the marker, but didn't find one, was on the right knoll though. Contoured around the hill to 8, flies were annoying me at this stage. Last few controls were nice running. Map was a bit dodgy in places.

Uphill walk to the start with Ciara. Definitely wasn't running this. Looking at the elevation data there was more climb in the walk than the course. Nice morning for running.

Didn't feel too interested once I left the start on the way to no. 1. But after a while I felt a bit better and started running harder. Bit rough at one point through some young trees, but once through that it was nice marsh running. 2 was a common control for 3 loops. All the loops were nice. Realy enjoyed this area, if only it didn't take so long to get up to. Orienteering was going ok at this stage but lost time at 11, map I reckon was a bit wrong or else control was in the wrong place.12-14 was tough, climb. After my last visit to the common control I took the last few controls easy, downhill though, as I didn't want to mess up.

Name of map ????
In Trondheim centre next to the athletics track.

Sprint training this afternoon. Needed to get Seamus out doing some relevant training. Got the first two controls easy enough but then the route from 2-3 onto the bridge was blocked due to construction work. Lost a bit of time here looking for a route through, but finally ended up going around the bit building. Minutes lost here but not relevant since race situation the map would be correct.

Rest of the course was straightforward enough, some route choice but nothing challenging. Legs didn't feel too bad running.

Control picking training.

Started off with a shower of rain so got absolutely soaked by that. Run to start was along a track and forest didn't look nice but turned out to be nice once we got orienteering. Didn't find the marker at no.1 but was definitely at the knoll since it was next to the big boulder. Next few controls went ok, bit of climb involved though. Neil caught me but wasn't getting away from me. He went a different route to 10 and he got away from me, I took a slower route to the left. I also lost time at 12, was at the control but didn't see the marker. 13 would have been easier if i'd read my descriptions, met Seamus and Neil climbing up from beside the spur and said the control was down low. I was heading for a knoll but control was on a crag underneath it.

It was more open around 17-19, some felling had taken place. 25-26 was a nice run, went across the river and followed the path. Then there was climb from 27 to 29, not a nice way to end. Took it slow for the last few as it got a bit more technical but had things under control.

Garmin said I ran 6.6km.

Wet again to start but dried off not long after starting. Did feel a bit sorry for the small shivering dog at the start sitting on a mat.

No. 1 was straightforward, contour around the hill from the corner of the track. Made a right balls of 2. Went uphill but the veg and the open areas I didn't make sense of. I ended up by two pits which I wrongly relocated off, headed away from them in the direction I thought the control was, but no control. I then looked at my map again to see that the pits were to the north of the control, I thought they were the depressions to the south. Got 3 ok and then 4 aswell. Andrew caught me at 3 but I got away from him at 4. Crossed the track after 3 but the vegetation didn't really make sense, very green with low visibility, kept going and luckily stumbled upon the control.

5 didn't go so well for two reasons, fell heavily coming out of 4 which shook me a bit, and then the path I wanted to follow from a junction didn't materialise where I thought it would be so lost a small bit of time due to a small bit of extra distance covered. Rest of the course went mostly ok apart from a slight directional error coming out of 9 but realised where I was and what I was doing fairly quickly.

Garmin distance was 7.32km
