Orienteering warm up/down 43:40 [2] 2.61 km (16:44 / km) +264m 11:07 / km

Warm-up for long race. Long walk to the start this morning but gave myself plenty of time to get there. Walked and ran some of it to catch up with Shane and Ruairi. Did a bit of jogging and stretching when I got to the start.

Was impressed when Ivan turned up in bare feet carrying Finn's camera!

Selection Race, Long
Leirsjoen

Since Middle didn't go so well I felt like i'd nothing to lose in the long. Ended up too far left to 1 and then I saw Andrew arrive in, didn't feel i'd lost 2 mins to him, but he was running well. Long leg to 2 but got it ok but then saw Ged arrive into the control, my 4min man. Definitely not happy with how I was running, orienteering was fine. Next few controls were short legs and got them ok, no sign of Ged. To 8 the route I took ended up with me climbing up a steep green area, tough, but route into the control was easy, as was the route to 9, used the same ride that got me into 8. The next long leg was to 10 and I got caught by a German lad. Didn't think my route was too bad, especially when I saw Ruairi ahead of me. Didn't catch him until 11, the start of the butterfly. We had the opposite loops in this but we ended up finishing the loops at the same time. I didn't get through it cleanly, lost time at 13 but took a much longer route to 15, following silly Germans, but I was sillier for following them. Then it was only two controls to the map exchange. Felt strong at this point.

The first control after the map exchange was horrific, all the way back up the hill. Followed the fence all the way to the start off the first part of the course before cutting across to the control. On the way into 20 I slid down a bank and my bank started to hurt. At this point all the energy that I thought i had vanished. Felt tired going to 21. Took a road route since I was so tired, but didn't get to the road as quickly as i'd have liked, dieing. Even downhill on the road I couldn't run since the legs had given up. Took another energy gel on the way into 21 but needed another going to 23, really couldn't move. Lost my way a bit on the way to 23, added extra climb, but relocated and then got the control. 24 was easy but 25 was uphill, not nice. 26 was downhill but not the easiest running before the last control which again was rough to get to.

Was absolutely dead afterwards. Back was also sore for a day or two. No WOC for me this year.

Garmin said I covered 18.4 km and 1272m climb. Havn't done anything this tough in a while.

Warm-up for the Middle distance. It was an uphill run from the arena to the start. There was also a warm-up map so did a tiny bit of that, and some stretching.

Selection Race, Middle
Hellmarka

Today was the day, my chance of getting on the WOC team, long was going to be too long, so middle was what I was concentrating on, prefer it anyway.

Started off ok, got into the map quickly and found the 1st control, then uphill, was standing on top of it for a few seconds before I realised it was underneath me. Then more uphill to 3. To 4 I ended up to the left of it but not much time lost beofre uphill again to 6. A short leg then to 7. To 8 I lost time, left 7 in the wrong direction, not my much but a few seconds lost and ended up in the big march. That was fine as I followed the drain towards 8 but went too far and had to come back up.

Number 9 was a total disaster. Left 8 on a bearing but somehow I got caught on a small little animal track and lost height. Next thing I knew I was on a track, and also could see lots of open areas. Really didn't have a clue what i'd done. Decided to follow the track but not very fast since I was unsure of where I was. A few hundred metres later I hit a bend and it all made sense, but way too late. Lost minutes, 3-5 on this leg and with it my chances of coming back in August to WOC, so was not happy. Once I got 9 I was back in command of things, and got to the map exchange. After that there was a tough slog to 13 through a felled area and I started to feel very tired. Lost time getting to 13, too far right, but knew what I was doing at the time. Then a short loop of 14-16, some seconds lost on 14, too far right. 17 was ok. At this stage I was pushing again, decided to give whatever i'd left. Ended up left of 18 but relocated ok. Then a rough run to 19, the last control, before the run in.

I actually orienteered fairly well today, apart from 9, which was a disaster, a clean run was needed but I couldn't keep it together. Looking at Routegadget I was probably in 3rd/4th place until 8, had a few seconds gap, but then it all went wrong.

Garmin said I climbed 287, elevation corrected, and covered a distance of 6.88km.

Garnes

Got this map from one of the organisers so myself, Dave and Gerard went out here for a training run. Dropped Dace on the western side of the map, and then I drove on to park near a football pitch. Due to signage issues I'm not sure if I parked somewhere I shouldn't have, but could see no reason why parking would be forbidden.

Plan was to go explore the white area as rest of the map was mainly green. In hindsight after racing the selection areas maybe the green areas would have been more relevant!!!

Headed up a track to get to the area. No set plan just wandered somewhat aimlessly, just checked out a few of the hills and marshes. Nice little area but map seemed a bit off at times. After a while I just had to give up, flies were really starting to annoy me, swarms of them. They followed me all the way back to the car, don't like swarms of flies.

Orienteering warm up/down 26:22 [2] ** 1.1 km (23:58 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Waverider 12

Warming up for the sprint race. Included some jogging and stretching. This time also included time from pre-start to the start line so that's minutes not doing much activity.

They gave us a bit of a warm-up map but not much to use on it.

Craft Cup Sprint
Verdalsora

I decided to race this, even though selection race was in the morning. Main reason was that last few sprints have gone ok and want to run after missing a few days.

I only had one problem in the race, and it happened very early. Picked up my map at the start line and ran to the start triangle. Looked at my map and had trouble finding the start triangle, then found one and it didn't make sens, realised it was start triangle after passing, so had another look and finally found where I was. Not a good start at all. Once i'd that problem out of the way things went fine. Pleased with how I ran and felt fine afterwards.

Not the most technical of sprints but controls 14-17 were interesting. There was route choice out there too.

We'd lots of pizza afterwards which was nice.

Garmin said I covered 4.76km.

Volhaugen
Model Event for selection races

Finally back training after a few days of sickness. Didn't push things today, just wanted to survive training and not suffer any after affects.

Most upsetting today was having to pay 20kr for parking in the middle of a forest in what appeared to be a public car-park.

Did the controls on the northern part of the map skipping 41. Thought this was a really nice area, runnable and nice, although there were a few contours. Marshes were nice and easy to navigate from. Generally happy with my run, although as I said I didn't push it. Did make one mistake at 36. Went along my planned route and came out in a big re-entrant with crags on the far side, but turned out I was too low. Relocated off a marsh to the north of the control and then got it fine.

Felt fine afterwards, glad to be back running.

Note
(sick)

Still not training. Have been in Trondheim since late Sunday night and all i've done is sit in the car while everyone else has trained :-( Hoping to get out at the model event for Craft Cup tomorrow if the body is up for it, reckon it should be.
