Jukola, Leg 3 ("Long Night")
Jaanankallio

Had the head torch on to start with. Run out to the start triangle was long and tough running, very mucky. They'd cut a gap through the trees, new open area on the map. At the start I decided to go left to the 1st control, on a track to start, but I left the track a little too late so ended up too far left, corrected myself and then got the control ok. Got 2nd control ok but overshot the 3rd control so lost more time here. 4 and 4 were ok and then to 6 I took the track. 7 was the first long leg, didn't see any option here but to go straight. Had the advantage of seeing some of this leg on the GPS before I started but was still no help. Leg started off ok but then I lost track of where I was and ended up on top of a cliff that I couldn't get down which I couldn't find on my map. Kept on going on my compass and things started to make a bit more sense. After 7, 8 and 9 went fine and so did most of the route to 10 apart from the last few hundred metres. Ended up to the left so I had to relocate with a few other people before getting the control. Made another mistake at 12, too far right and overshot. 14 was the second long leg. Again a route choice was hard to find. Ended up right of the line and caught a few lads so tucked in behind them. I then ended up at track which worked out nicely and then kept on going, up and over a few more hills before the control. I lost a bit of time close to the circle at 17, found a control, thought it was beyond mine so turned back, but quickly realised that it was before mine, turned again and then found the control. The last few controls were all straightforward enough.

Thankfully this area was not as physical as the model area, still a tough run but I did enjoy it. Around half way around it was bright enough to turn off my torch. Very surreal to be running with so many people in the same direction, some going faster and others going slower than you. It was reassuring to see some people with Leg 2 on their numbers at times.

I didn't push as hard as I could have tonight, need to save body for Nordic Tour which is the priority at the moment. I also was a bit unsure of night orienteering, especially in a technical area in Finland.

Garmin distance was 13.44 with 1019mclimb!!!

Note
(rest day)

I suppose today was a rest day before Jukola tonight but then i'd also classify Sunday as a rest day after the race. Just unusual to be running in the middle of the night. Dropped Niamh over for her last leg of Venla so waited around while she ran and kept an eye on the ladies race.

Orienteering warm up/down 6:20 [2] 2.33 km (2:43 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Short run to the start triangle from the car. The run back from the finish was longer, and some on a road, so didn't enjoy that too much.

Jukola Model Event, Night
Kuivuri

1st control was a short leg but through some tough green, not nice. Then the route I took to 2 was rough, before I got onto a track for a while, then more green before the control. 3-4-5 were short and ok. Then 5-6 I planned a route but veered right and ended up on a track so decided to take that and a ride instead, longer but easier running and orienteering.6-7-8 was nice running. Went left to 9, along a stream, before up and over a hill. I knew where I was but then things started to not feel right. Kept on running and then decided I'd gone too far, turned around and headed back up hill to find myself at the control, lucky. 10 to the finish was more rough running.

Was not very optimistic after this run, felt like it was going to be a tough race the following night. Area was very physical.

Garmin distance was 6.46km, big difference from course lenght but I took longer route choices for a few controls.

NORT Tour, Stage 1, Tuusula

Part 1, Middle Distance
Hyrla
5km course to start before a map exchange to a sprint map.
At the pre-start I was feeling very nervous, was really doubting why I was actually here and how bad I was going to do. These thoughts went away at the actual start, was more worried with swatting mosquitos in front of a tv camera. Generally I was pleased with how I ran apart from my exit from the 1st control, left it, hit a track and started running, problem being that I wasn't on the track I thought I was. Realised this and had to go cross-country to the right track and then on towards the control. Looking at the GPS a lot of people made this mistake for some reason. At the 4th control I caught Dave who started 1min ahead of me. Saw him again in the butterfly but wasn't sure if I was ahead of him or not. Made good time to 5 going the track, got there same time as Murray Strain, he left 4 slightly ahead of me. At 15 I caught Ger but once we hit the track to 17, he just took off, very supsetting. He didn't get away from me though. On the way to 18 I slightly overshot a track, didn't see it on map until too late, so Ger got his second map ahead of me. Then it was into the Sprint course of 3km.

Didn't take a good route to 1, had run too far before realising that steps by the start triangle should have been taken but no big deal. To 6 I went a different route to Ger and it paid dividends, I went right and just after I got the control I saw Ger run straight to 7 and punch it, then he realised that he needed to 6 so came back against me. Didn't see him again after that.Went right to 8 but it felt funny running through the supermarket car-park. Next few controls were short and I thought easy. Last few controls also didn't throw up much route choice.

In the results I was 2nd of the irish behind Nic which I was pleased with.

Another training area. Sprint map this time. Didn't want to take it too hard as there was a model event in the afternoon. Checked out some of the urban and the forested areas. Forest was a bit confusing at times.

Vaunukangas
Nordi-O-Tour Model Event

This model event was similar to the tour race, middle to start followed by a sprint map. The green areas were not easy going, tried one for a route today, so decided that in the race paths would be the faster option, there are lots of them around. Didn't have much trouble finding my way around at an easy pace altough was a bit surprised at the 5th control, was expecting to see a big boulder on the way to the control but never saw it.

On another note there was a freaky man at the event taking pictures of us. He came over to the car when we parked and then when we finished he took more pictures!

Forrsa Games
Onkilammi

Not a very good start to the trip. Arrived early and had to be in quarantine for 6, problem being that I wasn't starting until late. So then it started to rain but there was a tent to shelter under. The quarantine area then had lots of mosquitos who took a few bites before I got my insect repellent on. These bites turned out to be a pain over next few days.

The race i'd rather forget, particularly the 3rd control, made a right mess of it. Took the first one ok, but lost a bit of time on the 2nd, missed it and struggled a bit with the green. Thought the 3rd control would be easy, big open area as an attackpoint in front of it, so I took a bearing for that. Think the problem stemmed from veering to the right a bit on the bearing and then came across a large open area that wasn't mapped. Then actually entered the open area I wanted, went for the control but things didn't make sense for some reason. Was panicing a bit at this stage, wasn't happy, back out to relocate in the open area and it started to make a bit of sense, so back in to find the control this time. Probably well over 5 minutes lost.

Next control was fine and then 5, another balls up. Made a parallel error in a valley before the control, stopped too soon and area felt like where control should be. Another few minutes lost here, at least 3.

Rest of the course went fine, no trouble.

Not a good start to Finland. I didn't wear my GPS as I thought it was a WRE, turns out it wasn't, would have been interesting to see what I did for 3.
