Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [2] ****
ahr:114 max:153 shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Warm up for the Middle WRE. There was a warm-up map so ran around this for a while checking a few things. Also did some stretching.

POM 2010
Lagoa das Bracas
Middle Distance (WRE)

Went left to the first control, then relocated and headed towards the hill area with the control. Wasn't sure that the control was going to be here though, was a bit confused. Next couple of short controls went well, and good pace to the common control in the butterfly. The 2 loops went ok for me I think, nothing really of note happened. From the next control after the butterfly there was a long leg to 15. Got caught by 2 lads at this stage so they helped get me through the next few controls, almost to the spectator. They went too far left at 17 so I caught back the distance I was losing on them. A couple of easy legs before the spectator, then out for another 10 controls. Didn't run too fast to 21, the control after the specator, not too sure of what I was at. Then lost a bit of time at 24 (I think) and at 28, overshot to the right. Then last 2 controls.
30 controls was a lot over this distance. But it helped pass the time.

Very pleased with my effort. Got 924 points in the WRE, a PB, so have to be happy with that.

No GPS data since they aren't allowed in WRE events, but then why were some people wearing them???

Costa de Lavos
Night Sprint

After a long this morning and WRE tomorrow plan was to take it easy. Ran a nice pace with a couple of small errors thrown in, nothing bad. Was a tricky little area. Took longer route choices to the controls that passed near the start in order to avoid the crowds, but since I wasn't pushing it probably didn't matter, should have gone shorter!

Achilles (right) started to ache near the end, another couple of controls might have made me walk. Felt fine next day though.

Garmin said I ran 4.2km and did 98m climb

Long walk to the start so walked the first bit, then did some jogging and stretching once I got to the start.

POM 2010
Leirosa
Long Distance

Took an easy route to the first control on a path and the control just turned up in front of me. Was a bit cautious to the 2nd one, then the first butterfly of the weekend. First loop was fince and after no. 9 (been warned it was tricky but had no trouble) I headed back to the common control but had no real sense of where I was, came out into the open area but didn't know if I was N or S of the control, headed S cautiously and then spotted the nearby water station. Lost some time at this but nothing serious. Took a longer route to 11 than was probably necessary, was overly cautious taking a path. Few lads caught up with me between 14-17 which was handy to get a pull from them. Next few controls were fine. Then between 25-26, a short leg, got my direction a bit off so lost maybe 30 seconds to 1min getting to the control.

For my first race I was happy with how I ran, especially over the distance. Legs felt fine afterwards which was also pleasing. Today I took a few cautious routes, main reason was that yesterday I had real trouble with the model event maps, just didn't get them. Have more confidence after today.

Garmin said I ran 14.31km and climbed 512m.

Model Event

Not the best start to the weekend of racing. For some reason the first loop of controls near the start didn't make much sense to me. I know the contours were 2.5m but just had trouble at times making sense of the whole thing.

Second part of the training was a bit better.

Not too confident about tomorrow after this morning.

Afternoon session. Took it very easy, some jogging and some walking. Didn't get some of the green bits out in the open area but forest wasn't too bad.

Note
(rest day)

Travelling to Dublin this evening before flying to Portugal in the morning for POM 2010.
5 races in 4 days.
2 long
2 middle
1 night sprint

The first middle is a WRE so having a good run in that race is the priority, but may be made harder by the fact that there is a long and night sprint on the day before.

Main goal is to come back in one piece.

Blennerville Run, but not including Basin.

Low blood sugar so didn't want to risk running in to the basin and back out. Also some pain around the achilles tendons was annoying.
