Hiking 2:04:37 [1] 5.27 mi (23:39 / mi) +74m 22:40 / mi

Return, started chilly, grey & spitting but sunny delight by halfway down. Many stupendous views. Eternity written in sedimentary rock. All of this "work" is a weighted (by pack) "1" effort. Beth's quote for the day - on the walk down: "My heart is not a decision-making organ". Internet access is hard to find as is to be expected in NW MT.

Hiking 3:08:11 [1] 5.2 mi (36:11 / mi) +680m 25:44 / mi

Otokami Lake, breezy, sunny but tad chilly. No sweat with work req'd. 1882' climb per permit. Maybe 30-32# pack. Lake in sub-Alpine env't. Walk along a jade-colored lake with much ochre/piedmont? Met an interesting couple from Texas.

AM jog/walk along shore of Bowman lake to Numa Tr start. Chilly/overdressed but how quickly things change. Dip in lake. Small bit of bear paranoia perhaps...quickly how "lonesome" even the lakeside trail became after only a short distance.

Hiking 3:16:28 [1] 5.76 mi (34:06 / mi) +208m 30:40 / mi

Return, easier for sure, knew what to expect with slight push from gravity. Took a bit longer elapsed time tho watch on/off.

Hiking 2:59:38 [1] 5.78 mi (31:04 / mi) +459m 24:55 / mi

Hike to Akokala Lake from Beaumont Lake campground. Hike was listed as 6 mi each way. 305 started at the car - more like 5.7 from trail head. Didn't know what to expect after last week's White Mt. slugfest. But, as Phil said (& I'd forgotten) western trails are apt to be rock & root-free and generous with switchbacks when needed. Many lovely views, got there at 6pm. There were 3 sites - we had it to ourselves on the Friday night before Labor Day weekend. Bought & carried bear pepper spray ("Counter Assault") but saw little wildlife. Food prep was 100m away. Now eventide and the Blue moon should show soon. Background music of Akokala stream. $5 for a permit & free park entrance with USPS senior card...affordable excellence!

Jog along Lakeside Dr. in Lakeside, MT on the shore of Flathead Lake. Spent some 6 hrs on 2 flts & 4 hours in car so it was warranted. Full moon rose over the mountain range across the lake. Lovely drive thru narrow and wide valleys, much of it along a river, Clark Fork (of the ...). Long day from 0430 to now 0010 NH time.

Road/trail 31:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:20 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

SPS along bike path to Boathouse & return. Not a lot of energy. Certainly was a sparkling water afternoon.

Packed the old Kelty full up.... Dogs off to Peter's, coming home not the same!

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

DP as sun was coming. Began dark & rainy. Walked to point where tadpoles had once been teeming - now dried up. Replaced by songs of crickets & chorus of locusts. Did come across this guy walking along the sandy SVT, going my way.

This one didn't make it.

Road/trail 39:29 [2] 2.93 mi (13:29 / mi) +50m 12:48 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Jog with Marcello before dinner. Drove to S. Bow Rd and ran back. M had a Nottingcook map in hand & always knew where we were even when paths were indistinct. Dogs went to heaven and died...by the breathing of them anyway.

Talked of many things at dinner incl. his 4 WOCs at Switz, Hungary, Australia & France; PG and Sharon both of whom were readily familiar names; mapping at Whitehorse in the Yukon with Ross Burnett as host.

International mappers do so because they are interested (& are interesting people in the first place). The two we've met are very genuine which makes sense...if the forest is your bailiwick, you're down to earth:).

Note

Indeed this was an AOWN day when Beth said: "Close your eyes, open your hands" as we are wont to do.

Road/trail 33:38 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (28:38 @2) 2.61 mi (12:53 / mi) +67m 11:56 / mi

Jog back from sign staining w/ Beth & dogs. On the enervating side. Took the small trail near where we were working, missed some blazes, made a wrong turn & found myself enroute to the car which B was approaching when I got there. So we went back to last night's sign on the way out, restaining part of it. Gave her dogs who had enough. Toe does not hurt running but stubbing it would likely be a pain in the butt. 2+ miles unmasked tired legs.

Spent most of the day inside GSD - refreshed my mind re Svea stove use, got one going. Bought a new Canon digital.

Came across this photo today taken last spring, sitting on the desktop all the while.
"Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too...". Another fall is near.
