Orienteering race 43:00 [3] 3.0 mi (14:20 / mi)

Distance a guess, forgot to charge 305. UNO A meet at Harris Center. Very good run, just one mistake on #6, losing about a minute. Came upon what looked like 2 boulders but no flag. “Damn!" goes the mind, what next? Took a hard enough look at the map, figured out where I was and headed off to the north, finally seeing 2 boulders. Lost map contact about 3 times - boulders as mapped did not always look like what I was seeing which added tincture of confusion on several occasions. Decent energy, ran in shorts which feels cool=good - helps with energy.

Really splendid colors everywhere. Bundschuh-Ruutopold place is superb and superbly located on a stream and surrounded by ponds/lakes. Slept in the tent to the tune of a stream.

Old timers: Hans B, Tony F, Sharon and Jim Crawford, Per Stensby(!), Steve Tarry, John Rogers, Heather Williams, Larry & Sara Mae, Alex Kerr, Jim A.

Note

This is a semblance of what works for me and maybe others: it shows a (slightly torn, not relevant/sorry for that) BG CD. Normally the number has 4 pins to my shirt, one for each corner and, for me, the lower left would also pin the completely encased (won't tear/rip off) CD upside down.

I don’t like “stuff” on my arms...people are different. I want to see tape in a dispenser, no need for scissors. A big peeve is that, w/o the dispenser, one is often unable to find the end, and given the 60" limit in most instances, this can be quite annoying.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Pawtuckaway after work, c. 3p. Lots of streamers in some areas suggesting selective logging perhaps. Crazy, long drive back - preferred byways but not getting it right. Nice October pm.

Track 24:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (4:00 @2) + (4:00 @3) + (6:00 @4) 2.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

BHS around 5:30, sun gone for most part. 5x400, harder than pleased with.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

OLLI class with a small group of eager participants. Teaching map and compass orientation in a straightforward manner takes some thought when one sees initial attempts by intelligent people. Most enjoyed was a 350m bushwack on compass course from one known point to another, forget about map, have 'faith' in compass bearing.

Orienteering race 1:01:45 [3] 3.1 mi (19:57 / mi) +63m 18:45 / mi

Sunday brown long. Certainly had one bad point, #10, losing 6', comparing with Dave Cady. Pretty much straightaway to the first 8 points. Lost a minute at #9, a minute between #13 & 14, thinking 13 was a road crossing control, slowing down & even getting mixed with direction.... Maybe another 30" on very small stuff and the rest of a 2-3' deficit must have been RC. 1>2 and 6>7, I went straight when it may have been better going around on trails. Disappointed with the 6' error; perhaps one needs one's head examined with such a lengthy error in such a small area of possibility with so much prior experience. I went back to that point/area on the way home and it was all there, clear as could be.

Nice meet by EMPO. Nice mapping work by Mark. The sun finally came out in the early PM. It never did rain. Between the wind in the trees and the rushing creek a short distance away there was quite the chorus during the night. Back to Williamstown for the night, Beth due from Burlington later.
