Yesterday (1964) and today - same classmate 50 yrs later on marble promontory on right

Orienteering race 32:43 intensity: (22:43 @3) + (10:00 @4) 2.02 mi (16:12 / mi) +145m 13:15 / mi

Middle, chilly/good temp. Ran in shorts which helped. Good run - went to everyone directly. Went to #1 straightaway but did not see the classic pond I had in mind (how silly is that) - saw a flag but did not check code, ran away from it (as in headless panic?) but caught hold, looked around & went back to the flag which was indeed the correct one. Climbing on the way to 9 made it hard to keep on a bearing & when I crossed the marsh & looked at the hill, I did not see the reentrant, went right & hoped I was right - which I was. A bit sloppy on #10 (ended up running down drive from small bldg); #11 was a grunt as was the run in. Was in first by only 6-7 seconds (Natalya D. & Greg Yarkie), so glad to have pushed as much as I could. I’m not always aware of putting out continuous concerted effort, so I don’t do it. First M65 and second in Saturday’s distance so a good weekend. Nice to have good weekends when so much time/energy/effort is involved in the coming and going.

Orienteering race 46:04 [3]

M65 Long, 4.2k, 1/7500, give it a B+/A-. Went to all of them w/o specific loss, had some luck when needed, did lose map contact twice. Was fairly pedantic & missed better route choices in a few cases, first control point a point in case...should have gone three times as far down the road to the white spur. Chilly early but was over-covered by midway.

305 was very slow in acquiring satellites at start, finally asked me if i was outdoors - hit enter vs off which gave me a start screen but there was no gps signal, evident too late.

A well done day by the organizers, including the weather!

Took a look at Letchworth after. Have been 3 or 4 times since 1998 Long (incl. maybe something before). Saw more today than all previously, I think.

Orienteering race 16:41 [4] 1.69 mi (9:52 / mi) +3m 9:49 / mi

USOC Sprint M65 at Genesee Park in Rochester. Windy, windy and mid70s. This was a B run, squandered a minute (best for me 15:30?), some 30" of it in missing a fence opening on the way to #8. Distracted by golfers & following the youngster in front of me who looked like he knew where he was going. At least I stopped & went back vs running around.

Camping at Woodstream Campsite about 5 mi west of the park. Very nice, especially with the wind & rain on Friday night to make for a cozy tent.

Note

Two days of rain & gloom & the second ending in a drive to Bennington, Vt. for the night. Lovely colors on the hills and mountains.

Track 35:00 [3] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

SPS track after work - had about 40', did 200 at 7' pace and walked 100s between & then had to leave for an appointment. Time of year and day when it can be hard to get to use a track or infield due to kids about. It's their terrain.

Kayaking 3:16:07 [1] 8.5 mi (23:04 / mi) +3m 23:03 / mi

Contoocook kayak with Beth. Possibly the best kayaking experience in the local area. Not many houses at all, under only one road, lots of field and forest. Located another launch point at Bohanan Farm for a future, shorter visit. Stopped at 3 and 6.6 miles (Daisy Beach). Logged as 1 for the three plus hours of upper body work it was - stronger arms/shoulders, softer face plants. 8.5 miles per 305 but of a different persuasion.

L Achilles awareness this am, presumably from sitting to running transition yesterday. Need a second pair of running shoes.
