To Joe's Saab to get car - nice chill to the air.

Orienteering 1:19:01 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (39:01 @2) 3.79 mi (20:51 / mi) +180m 18:10 / mi

Put out 8 permanent O markers in Nottingcook, warm at first but became April showery gray. Saw a bear! Z&M smelled something - I'm thinking they're on their way to the barn as it was late for dinner but then, out of a tree, a black shape hurls to the ground & takes off. They all take off, no barking. I'm thinking they might have treed it. But bear comes running toward me about 1' later -- stops behind a tree about 30m away for 15" & then takes off - dogs nowhere to be seen or heard. With a few whistles, they show up.

Note

QR from Deep Hollow. Can see that I "slid" down the mountain side on #1. Saw a spur/nose, went toward it & noted a small reentrant adjacent but no flag...flag or no flag would have been instant feedback in the real thing.

Saw several You Tube videos of the Boston bombing. Seeing more or less precisely where the first detonation took place was cause for pause as that's where we were standing or sitting (had a chair). We were in the same place last year as well so it was quite familiar. At one point, I wondered if the flags were set up in same place/same order every year.
Last year's finish perspective.

Trail/woods running 51:26 [2] 4.69 mi (10:58 / mi) +78m 10:26 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

At Walden after the BAA. Crossed tracks & was on old route that got me to Old Concord Rd but time to turn back. Got to edge of Fairhaven Bay after coming to Pleasant Pasture. Encountered the same couple 4 times plus one distant spot on the RR track. Paused at the beach where I set off to swim the pond in the moonlight on an August night 2 years ago. Walden Res woods are open, clean, rock-free, contour-laden & probably off-limits now-a-days. Might have added a few miles but dogs complicated visit > "no pets". Sluggish, too. After, we stopped at a DD in CC & wound our way thru the rest of fair Concord & Carlisle.

Serenity before the storm

A lovely visit to downtown Boston, marred by the news after we had left. The usual festive atmosphere permeated the inner city on a fine April day. We were in the finish line area, leaving about an hour before the explosions.

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)

Nottingcook walk with Beth for placing permanent O markers - got 6 of 25 in 2 hours...pretty slow but time to smell the flowers. Some pretty serious beaver chewing near the bog outlet. Water level down due to b dam damage by an uprooted tree. Found a dead beaver yesterday - near water but not near the kind of place one would expect a beaver. Beth guessed humans had something to do with it - sad...what a large tail & nice furry coat even if disrupted. Forgot the gps.

Road running 1:49:25 [2] 10.42 mi (10:30 / mi) +255m 9:46 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Purgatory loop, cw. Cool & gray. More or less of an inquiry run as I've done so little in the way of long runs. 3 pages and two dogs charging for side shows.

Discovered the the BAA marathon is this Monday, not next. Well, good as I have the day off & a visit to Boston seems likely.

Note

Truly crappy weather today. The ground even changed color.
Accomplished a slightly better BOS website, always work in progress and served as an excuse to miss a training opportunity in the raw out-of-doors.

Trail/woods running 35:00 [2] 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

In Winant Hill area p work. Was napping in car at SPS end of Silk Farm when a lost truck driver knocked on the window - his gps had led him down the now-a-days cul-de-sac. Going nowhere in particular, I offered to take him around to the other side leading to a different possibility for running. But a drab weather day did little for energy creation.

Wood hauling/stacking 40:00 [3]

'Schlepping wood' as Mark would say. Kind of work I'd pay $12/hr for someone else to do.
