Orienteering race (Sprint) 24:42 [3] 3.42 km (7:13 / km)
shoes: Nike Structure

Bitterly disappointed with my running speed today. Cautious to 1, clean to 2, hesitation to 3, 4 fine, had to get the magnifying glass out at 5 to try and work out where the control was, 6 to 9 was just running, 10 went right past it and stood for a few seconds trying to work out where it was. This was where I lost most of my time; messy route choice and then I couldn't find it. Straight forward to 18. Small time loss on 19, clean to 20, wrong side of the wall at 21, 22 fine, finish. Should have been able to do this in 20 mins.

I may very well be the envy of some eastern states (NSW?) female Orienteers. I got to look after Tooms Two for half an hour while MTBjen and Tooms had their runs. Sophie especially enjoyed 'looking after' him.

Orienteering (Sprint training) 19:35 [3] 2.85 km (6:52 / km)
shoes: Nike Structure

Practise urban sprint at UWA for tomorrow's race in Mandurah. Ran the short course from one of the Nav Dash's. Tried not to look at the map or course before I started running. A bit hesitant with some of the route choices but generally ok. A fun way to fit in a training run.

Spent all morning at Kings Park, catching up with three good friends from high school days, and their kids. A great morning.

More socialising with a visit to Sandra and Michael's for dinner and royal wedding watching. Sandra and I watched the whole thing, trying to ignore the smart aleck comments coming from Bruce and Mick. Great day but have to admit I am shattered now.

(rest day)

This has been a very social week. Spent a lovely day with Graham and Ceri at their house.

(rest day)

We spent the whole day at my friend Jo's farm near Cunderdin. Highlight of the day for the kids was a ride in the huge tractor with seeder attached (complete with GPS steering for no hands farming) and steering the ute across the paddock. It was a wonderful day but 4 hours of driving is quite tiring.

Over to Point Heathcote Reserve in Applecross for Ella Hogg's 4th birthday party. Spectacular setting and a lovely day. Very pleasant sitting on the green grass in the sun and part shade talking to Annwen, Cath, Eoin, Nat, Andy, Adrian and Heather. Think the kids had a good time too.

Orienteering race 45:46 [3] 3.93 km (11:39 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

Last starter today. Cautious to 1; up onto the rock surface, followed the yellow into the rocks in the white. Long leg to 2 I decided immediately to go right, making sure I avoided all the green. Down the long spur to the dam, along the creek and in from the left. Hesitated a bit in the control circle. Clean through to 9, making sure I went out the the yellow when I could and also used the rock surfaces. Hill climb towards 10, then onto the track. Messed this one up a bit as I came in through the crappy white and should have kept going and used the rock surface. Silly route choice error which probably cost me a minute of stuffing around in the forest getting to the control. All rock surfaces to 11, straight forward to 12, then finish.

Not super happy with running speed today and felt I probably could have run faster to get in at 40 mins. Very nervous about being last starter and it was quite hot.

So, a pretty successful Easter. Lead increased to 65 mins over the 3 days. Came away pretty battered and bruised but thankfully both ankles are injury free. Can officially run W40A next year but not sure I want to race against Sandra Tarr-she's too fast for me!

Rest of the week will be spent catching up with friends before returning to Orienteering next weekend.

Orienteering race (Day 2) 59:44 [3] 4.67 km (12:47 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

Very cautious to 1, just to make sure I got it cleanly. A little high but I saw it in the gully. Across the rock surface and clearings to 2, on a compass bearing to 3 but drifted left and confused myself when I saw the Elite change over area. Slow and steady to 4, completely annoyed that I had made two mistakes in a row. Long leg to 5; dropped straight to the fence, past the dam to the fence junction. Used this as my attack point, up over the spur and counted off the rock surfaces. Must have drifted off to the left as I came out in the main watercourse rather than the small one running off the side. Biggest mistake of the day here and ran around like an idiot trying to work out where I was. Worked it out and found the control but probably wasted two mins plus. At home sitting on the couch, the best way would have been to cut across the paddock and follow the rock surfaces around from the left. Clean through to 10, although the slog up the hill from 7 to 8 was hard going. Bit scrappy finding 11 in the thick green, straight forward to 12 and finish.

Certainly not as pleased with todays run. Too many small mistakes which in total probably cost me more than 5 mins. However, the other runners in W35AS made bigger mistakes and my lead has now stretched from 30 mins to 47 mins. I can hear the word 'bandit'.
