Note

This winter is turning out to be the best winter for skiing I've ever remembered in PA and one of the worst for orienteering. Orienteering with some snow is fun, but it's far too deep now to do anything worthwhile. And it looks like we're going to get 1-6 inches of snow every day for at least the next ten days.

So might as well get as fit as possible skiing and running so I'm ready to really push the envelope when orienteering is possible again.

The thing is though that orienteering can't really exist in a vacuum. For example, I can run a fast 5k and we all know what that time means more or less. But if I have an excellent performance in a middle distance without competitors, does that hold much meaning? You could always say that you'd have to see what others can do.

This makes it difficult for me to set goals to do on my own during this pandemic. What is an outstanding performance in orienteering without competitors?

More snow! Wanted to do 20/40s but there was too much snow to really pick up the pace. So just an easy run.

8x30 second hills on a 12% grade at harder than 5k effort.

Was surprised how much power I felt in my legs and arms to drive up that hill. I think skiing has been helping a lot.

I considered driving to Tobyhanna to ski the 8k loop there. But the prospect of breaking trail on my own in even deeper snow for that long was not appealing at all. Plus I've got (thankfully) more translation work coming through. So I decided to stay close to home today since the conditions are beautiful here also. At least they're beautiful once I packed down the snow enough.

I was hoping to get back into the forest soon. But it looks like Pachamama has decided that we're going to focus on skiing and snowshoeing for now.

Decided to break the trail again on my loop at the park. I was only able to start gliding on the fourth loop. Deep snow.
