Such a unique place. It was like stepping out of Mid-Atlantic forest onto a Norwegian hillside.

Went quite slow because this is the first time I've run here with warm weather and I've been told there are "tons of snakes out there." All the bare rock is ideal habitat for snakes and there are lots of crevices for them to hide in, but I didn't see one. No snake skins, nothing. They may come out later or I might not have seen them, but I have a feeling they're not as prevalent there as some people have made them out to be.

There are some thorny patches in the lower sections around the streams and marshes. Not super fun, but also not unusable.

I believe the technical term for this is "a slog."

Legs were feeling like bricks. The kettlebell workouts have taken a lot out of them, which is good news, but also ouch.

One of the things I've struggled with the most since moving back stateside has been training while under pressure. I've tried listening to WOC commentary before I start, visualizing the training course as a real competition with all the pressure. They've worked okay, but I want to keep testing out other things.

So the goal today was to start shortly before sundown and punch as many controls as possible before it got so dark that I couldn't read the map. That worked pretty well, especially since I didn't have a headlight with me. There was an extra urgency present that kept me pushing hard, but I also knew it was even more important to be clean. I really like this tactic, but I think I need to be little less ambitious. Either a shorter course or more time before sundown.

Note

Finally managed to merge the data for all of Mocanaqua. Super annoying that it was split into two sets with different point types and point sizes. Finally figured it out.

Everyone's invited to come enjoy my GPS courses there when we can travel again.

Mocanaqua always finds a way to break me.

Usually it's from the physicality of the terrain. But today it was because I got a stick in my right eye on my way to number 2. Spent 20 minutes pulling bits of the stick out but my vision is still pretty blurry in that eye.

Hopefully this gets better tomorrow.

Stick in the eye at 2. Then random points through the rest of the course trying to clear up my vision.
