Note

Put one Irish in a taxi, rescued another Irish from the bouncers and deposited him in MacD's, so he at least didn't end up in the back of a police van.

Note

MP today, mostly because I'm stupid, partly because the drinks control was dry. Even the bottles in the bin bag were empty.

Day 5
Felt rough going up to the start, but with a map in hand, things slowly improved. Did more catching than being caught, except by Sabine H who caught me, ran away from me repeatedly on downhills, got caught again...

Made a few mistakes, one massive one on #14 where I lost the guts of 3 minutes, but managed to catch up with some of the group again after. Joshosh I caught around 6, kept on seeing him throughout. He outsprinted me on the run-in, my ham felt a bit tight so I couldn't test him to the max.

At #20, the water stop had no water. Tess and I searched the bin bag for non-empty bottles with no luck. I didn't punch the control, since that's what I do while drinking. No sympathy from the organisers. Bad form.

Note

Great terrain producing worthy and inspiring champions!

Not much energy at all, so decided to take it easy and conserve some for the banquet and day 6.

Map wasn't much help in some parts where there was a bunch of fallen trees.

Heavy terrain, hard work.

Note

Here's hoping they actually have a results board at the long race arena tomorrow. In the middle I didn't know who medalled until I was leaving. Poor show. Should be an epic race anyhow.

Scottish 6day #4
Back to run on the other side of Darnaway.

Nothing too difficult, didn't feel too strong physically and made a few small errors. The last few controls went well, smooth spike spike spike.

Won in 51, which seems fast.

Scottish 6day #3
Darnaway

Middle distance, ran fast, two stupid mistakes, but the fastest (and easiest?) orienteering I've done in a long while.

Scottish 6day Day 1

Bad spell with mistakes on 13-14-17 in the middle. Otherwise, broadly satisfactory.

Note

Forgot to pack gloves and thermal undies.

Note

I didn't sleep on the plane yesterday because I was chatting with a biathlete about Russian doping (WADA van arrives to accommodation, russian coach puffs into cafeteria, russian athletes leave, leaving unfinished meals, russian coach descends to talk with wada officials, eventually leads them to cafeteria, russian coach is confused as athletes were there earlier, maybe they are in the other building, russian coach leads wada officials to other building, etc. etc.), Steven Hale's daughter, La Féclaz, Aix-les-Bains (he lives a few hundred metres from where the music festival was on 13th July). Etc.

He seemed pretty convinced that biathlon was a great sport, which bemused me.

Note

Not as sunny as '99, but the weather avoids disaster for the coming week.

running 36:00 [3]

Evening run. Long day after being up before 6 for the Musical Dawns (concerts aux Bains des Pâquis).
Am I ready to go to Scotland tomorrow? No
Have I a place to stay tomorrow? I nearly had.
