Flying Pig XIV, Day 1 at East Fork SP on Slabcamp Run map (north of the lake). Brown B, 3.2k, 130m. Middle distance (legs were middle distance character but course length was about 40% on the long side). Steep gullies and reentrants, muddy and thickish vegetation, some of it scratchy. Honeysuckle was just starting to green up but visibility was still pretty good. Low 40s, cloudy - good for running, less so for hanging around.

Run was mostly OK. Made a bad route choice to 2 and ended up climbing several unnecessary contours. Checked out some similar features on the way to 4 but figured things out fairly quickly - lost about 2 min. Did some extra climb going to 7. Got a little lucky on 10 cutting through what was mapped as dark green, but wasn't, and hit the control right on (even though my attack point was a bit sketchy).

Pretty physical course with lots of steep climbs on muddy slopes. Took one fall that took a patch of skin off the palm of my left hand. More of same tomorrow (although at classic distance).

From Water Street Park in Hellertown, through Thomas Iron Works up almost to the Interstate and then back with some small route variations. About 40F. Followed a rather large red fox along a trail for a bit, until he spotted me.

Half Wit Half Marathon and Half-a-Half. Trail race by Pretzel City Sports on Mt. Penn in Reading, PA. I did the shorter race (i.e. one lap rather than two). It's a somewhat convoluted story, but basically the course ended up about 1.2mi short of the intended distance (6.55mi, which would be a quarter marathon). The shorter distance was fine with me.

About 0.75mi of the course was on pavement, the rest was trails on Mt. Penn. Trails were often rocky, sometimes steep and occasionally leaf covered. There was no mud on the entire course. A couple of steep descents (one on leaf covered rocks) and one brutal climb just after the 4-mile mark (50m climb in about 180m). Otherwise the course was pretty tame. Temperature was just about 40F with a pretty stiff breeze (which wasn't really an issue in the woods).

Was 15th of about 60 who stopped after one lap. First M68+ (and also 60+, of which there were 3 but the closest was 20 minutes behind me.) There was a 72 yo guy whose time for the 2 laps was less than twice mine, so likely he was ahead of me as he finished his first lap, plus a 63 yo who was way ahead.
