Trail Run warm up/down 17:04 intensity: (1:17 @0) + (2:00 @1) + (8:32 @2) + (5:15 @3) 1.61 km (10:36 / km) +30m 9:42 / km

To start. Ran/jogged most of it, except for the couple minutes I stopped to talk to Peggy.

Green course at Fountainhead West. 6.4k, 225m. More typical QOC spur and reentrant terrain. Nice open and runnable woods. Low 50s, cloudy when I ran but some sun later.

A good run. Went up a reentrant early to the first control but quickly jumped over to the correct one. A bit of hesitation to 4 as I had drifted right and the contours weren't what I expected. More hesitation on 5 as I saw things in the terrain which I didn't see on the map but figured out the bigger features and headed into the circle to hunt among the 6 or so reentrants for the one with a flag. Pretty clean until 15 when I chose to follow a curvy trail rather than take the better, straighter route along the OOB boundary. All errors were less than a minute so 2-3 minutes total. Running out of gas towards the end. Fun and challenging course by Vido.

Middle distance Red course from Team Trials on Hoyles Mill map. 5.3k, 55m. This was quite the navigational challenge. Contours (where they exist) are very subtle. There are many mapped rock features but most of them are less than 1 meter high and most of the (now leafed-out) vegetation is more than 1 meter high. Lots of following the compass and trying to spot identifiable features to verify location. Once I figured out how to read them, wet areas and linear marshes were useful. Fortunately, the bags were hung high and were very bright.

My orienteering was mostly good, after losing about 5 minutes on the first control when I started searching about 100m too soon. Hooked in a bit to number 5 and got lucky going to 8 when I came across a control on the other course and was able to pinpoint my location. Temperature was in the low to mid 50s with sun and clouds at the start and then a couple claps of thunder and some hail(!) near the end of my course.

Thanks to Peggy for the overall organization, Dave Lithicum for the courses and for all the other volunteers who helped make this happen.

Sprint Team Trials Red course. 3.4k, 60m. At Maryland Soccerplex near Germantown, MD. Fun course by Linda K on an excellent map by Nadim. Lots of fast running on pavement or grass but also significant rough open to negotiate. Enough contour detail that sight lines were often restricted, so it wasn't just look and run. Low 50s with light rain.

Sprint skills were a little rusty. Hesitated on the way to 2 adjusting to the map scale (I thought this was a great leg, especially early in the course, forcing you to use vegetation detail to navigate). Hesitated at 9 trying to figure out the vegetation. Some sub-optimal execution of routes on a few legs. Lost about 30 seconds to 6 since I initially planned a route from 5 to 7 which made my approach to 6 longer once I corrected. Probably could've pushed a bit harder if the race had any significance but saw no need to.
