Brown course at Fair Hill Mason-Dixon, Mid-Atlantic Champs hosted by DVOA. 3.7K, 135m climb. Nice course set by Tom O, giving us every opportunity to avoid green scratchy stuff, even if some of us didn't always take advantage of it. Thanks Tom. Visibility was good, grass in the fields was high so they weren't as fast as they have been at past events. Temperature in the upper 40s and mostly cloudy.

A very good run with only one significant error. Lost 1.5-2 min going from 2 to 3 when I failed to see the trail to avoid the green at the field edge, even though I had used that trail on my approach to 2. Battled through green and had to cross a fence in that green, plus added some additional climb. Other than that, kept focused and tried to keep pushing the pace. First overall on Brown.

Relay at Mid-Atlantic Champs. Leg 2, which was characterized as intermediate (orange) difficulty. 2.3k, 85m climb. On a team with Janet on the 1st leg and Dim Palau as anchor. We were a 9-point team so started 14 minutes ahead of 3-point teams and 7 minutes ahead of 6-point teams. (This scheme seems to work quite well - the top three teams finished within a minute of each other and included a 3, 6 and 9 point team. In 2019, the same scheme had the top 6 teams finishing in a two-minute window.)

I had a good run, starting about a minute behind Addie Nolan. I caught glimpses of her off and on through the 4th control but then lost a bit of time going to 5 with a "shortcut" through some green stuff. I also lost a couple of seconds when one of the JROTC kids got to the first control just ahead of me and decided that the control needed to beep 5 times to record the punch (I reminded her that one beep was adequate). Fun course, again by Tom O.
I think our team was 9th overall.

DIY course at Wooster Mountain, set by Joe (Thank you!). Green course, nominally 5.3k with no climb stated, but there was plenty. Generally open woods with lots of contour and rock detail. Rocky footing. There were actual o-flags at the control sites.

Ran pretty well through about 75 minutes (10 controls), then lost focus a bit and some time. Good through #5 then stayed too low and wide going to 6 but corrected OK. Bobbled in the control circles on both 8 and 9, having trouble figuring out the fine details and determining what feature the bag was actually on. Fell apart on 11 when I assumed the bag was in an obvious reentrant rather than the cliff it was really on - spent several minutes confirming the bag was "missing" from the reentrant, then read the control description and spent a few more minutes checking every cliff and finally spotting the bag just as I was about to leave the area. Slogged from there into the finish (which I've counted as a control since it was a 580m navigation leg to an orangish level feature. I picked up 3 mylar balloons on my way to the finish.

Weather was typically November, low 40s, mostly cloudy and some breeze - incentive to keep moving.

Green course at Sessions Woods. 5.4k, 155m. Fine course set by Charlie DeWeese and Bill Duncan (who also hung around in the cold while we were out running around in the woods) - Thanks! Nice running weather - upper 40s, mostly cloudy - less good for standing around.

A good run. Lost some time on 5 by not seeing the trail option and descending through the rockiness near the stream. Also lost a bit on the way to 8 by going about 100m in the woods paralleling the trail I should have been on. Otherwise hit all the controls well. Made the adjustment to just ignore the vegetation when the map and terrain didn't match, knowing that things can change pretty quickly here.

Green course at Mt.Tom. 5.0k, 230m climb. Very fine course set by Phil. Physical (climb, deadfall and underfoot rockiness) but good contour and rock detail to read for navigation. Good timing weatherwise with rain the night before and then starting again about 3:30pm, well after everything had been picked up. Sunny and low 50s while we orienteered.

A good run, with the only navigation error on the last control when I stayed too high and hit the stream valley at the big cliff about 100m NW of where I wanted to. Lost maybe 60-90 sec. May have had sub-optimal routes on 6 and 7 but was in map contact the whole time.

Thanks to Phil and the rest of the NEOC crew for a fun event.

Lehigh Parkway, parking at the covered bridge. Mostly on mountain bike trails south of the creek (up on the hill). Mostly just slogged along, not pushing the pace at all. Trails mostly leaf covered. Another fine November day - low 60s and sunny.

Long Distance NRE at Rodney Scout Reservation. Courses by Wyatt R. More vegetation than the Iron Hill and far less well mapped (due partly to the map being older). Many unmapped rootstocks and reduced visibility in areas where leaves have not yet dropped.

One major error on 5 where low visibility caused me to pass through the circle a few times before actually finding the control - lost about 8 minutes. Also lost a minute on 1 not being properly focused when I started (and still being in 1:7500 mode). Dubious control site for #2 where there was a large unmapped rootstock hiding the control flag (and the actual feature, which was a charcoal platform). Sixth on Brown X, fourth in M65.

Sprint NRE at Bellvue SP near Wilmington, part 1 of DVOA's Back to the Woods event. 1.9k, 18m climb. Good course set by Tom O, mostly in open parkland but with a couple controls in the woods. Sunny and in the upper 40s when I ran.

Good on 12 of the 13 controls, with only minor occasional hesitations. A giant error on number 11 when I somehow thought that the control was on the other side of the prominent gravel track. Punched a control but noticed the code wasn't correct. Took a full two minutes to get back on track. Still managed to be 1st in M65, but behind Peggy and Walter on Brown X.

Note: no heart rate strap, just the wrist sensor.

Middle NRE at Iron Hill Park near Newark, DE. Brown X, 2.6k, 65m. Great area, great map and great course by Tom O. Areas of rock and contour detail with a trail network which is complex in places.

Good run with errors of about 1 minute each on 6 and 8. Must have gone right by 6 without seeing it (a 2m boulder!?) and had to double back. Pushed right by vegetation on the way to 8 and noticed I was right above the parking lot near start - relocated from there but then did some unnecessary vegetation bashing right near the control. Hesitation on the way to 2 when I hit a 4-way trail junction when expecting a 3-way junction but figured it out. Lost some time (and blood) going (unnecessarily) through some medium green shortly after leaving 6. Second on Brown X, first in M65.
