Mountain bike riding in Sedona. Perfect weather - sunny and 60s. Rode from the rental shop north on Soldiers Pass Road to a bike park with a variety of downhill flow trails with bumps and jumps (went around the jumps). Then north to Soldiers Pass Trailhead and a few tougher (but short) trails to Devil's Kitchen, a large sinkhole in the red rocks. After a lunch break I headed down the Adobe Jack Trail, a nice flow trail with some rocks but nothing too gnarly. Janet headed back to the bike park more or less the way we had come. Adobe Jack brought me out on 89A, the main drag through Sedona, so I rode roads back (up) to the bike park for a couple more runs there. That was enough for us, so back to the bike shop and our car.

Hike to Birthing Cave near Sedona, AZ. Started at Mescal Trailhead, took connector trail to Long Canyon Trail and then the unmarked trail to the cave. On the return we went a bit farther north on the Long Canyon Trail to its junction with the Deadman Pass Trail, then back on Long Canyon and tok the road back to the car rather than the connector to Mescal Trail.

GPS track is a bit funky near the cave and cliff - actual distance was about 3.9mi rather than 4.5. Climb also adjusted (it was not 348m).

SWSW Day 7 - Greasewood Park, west of Tucson. Map at 1:5000 with a 4-ft contour interval (Yes, feet). Terrain is open desert with scratchy stuff but spread out enough that you can weave around it. Mass start, with a twist - there were 8 clothespins at several of the controls and if there were any still there when you got there, you took one and then had to visit an additional control on the way to the subsequent control. So faster runners ended up having to do more controls. Unfortunately, we missed the mass start because we needed to deal with low pressure in one of the rental car tires. Fortunately we were able to get there in time to go out on the course, starting about 25 minutes after the mass start.

Since I wasn't mass-starting, I did all the controls. Did OK for the first four but then started to struggle with the scale and interval (and my ability to follow a compass bearing). Probably lost about 15 minutes bobbling around with 4, 5, 5a, and 6. Did fine the rest of the way.

Another fine day - 50s and sunny.

SWSW Day 6 - Sprint training on University of Arizona campus. Did Sprint A which was 2.8km straight line. One major error when I lost track of which building I was looking at and took a while to recover (about 3 minutes). Otherwise did OK with route choices and not getting caught on the wrong side of something uncrossable. Sunny and low 50s - good for running, a little chilly standing around.

SWSW Day 5 - Core Creek Score-O in the Santa Rita Mountains (to the south of where we did the Javelina Hustle) using a map generated from Lidar data with field checking of trails and fences. Very scenic area but physical with big, steep hills, rocky footing and plenty of scratchy stuff. Course had 20 controls with point values of 10 to 50 with a total of 550 possible points. Time limit was 3 hours, which was enough time for several people to visit all the controls.

Orienteered well, visiting 19 of the 20 controls. My plan going in was to just move along at a comfortable pace and avoid any need to push to make it back in time. The control I skipped was worth 10 points and involved an out-and-back mostly on trail or dirt road. I made the decision to skip it early. Many of the controls were in straightforward locations but most were on scenic or interesting features (tops of hills, stream bends with waterfalls, a cave). Control order: 20-32-50-42-33-31-24-22-40-34-11-23-41-21-30-37-36-35-25

Another sunny day, despite the forecast of rain, with temperature in the low 50s. It was quite windy (in the 20-30mph range). It was raining by the time we got back to Tucson and the temperature had dropped into the 40s.

Picked up 5 controls. 37-30-21-41-23. Had already been to them all but did them in the opposite direction. Quite windy on the ridge with 21 and 30.

SWSW Day 3 - Cholla Chaser at Catalina SP. Mass start with handicapping depending on age and gender. Course was 1 control, a box with 7 controls, return to the first control, then a 4 control conventional point-to-point course. Your handicap determined the number of controls you had to visit in the box - I needed 4.

Orienteering was mostly OK. The controls I did in the box were D-F-A-G. Most of the other people doing this group did it in the opposite order, so I was mostly on my own and was only really helped by people coming out of F. I ran trails/washes to D but took more or less straight lines on the other legs, resulting in spending time in nastier vegetation than I needed to (and costing time). Lost a few minutes on #3 in the point-to-point section when I was pulled off to the left by other people and hit the big reentrant east of the one I wanted. OK the rest of the way in but not much left in the legs.

Another fine day weatherwise - low 60s and sunny.

SWSW Day 2 - Javelina Hustle on Greaterville map, SE of Tucson. Ridge and reentrant terrain at ~5000 ft. elevation, with less cactus than at lower elevations. Mostly tall grass intermixed with scratchy stuff. Mass start event with some twists including one box of three controls to be done in any order, a control across a whited-out strip of about 150m and a line-O with three controls to find along it. There were two boxes to choose between (the long course did both boxes). I did the medium length course which was billed as 6.9km with 200m of climb.

Orienteering was mostly good. Of course with a mass start there are usually people leading you into controls. I lost a minute or so on my 7th control (13 on the map) when I drifted off line while planning my route through the window I was approaching. I chose the north window, visiting controls 16-14-15. On the line-o I got pulled off by another control (pretty obviously not on the line) which cost a half minute or so.

Another fine day of Arizona orienteering with temperature in the 60s and plenty of sun.

SWSW Day 1, Classic Distance at Catalina SP. Green course, 4.6k, 140m. Desert terrain with the added bonus of some thicker vegetation because it's been wetter than usual. Sunny and in the 60s.

Orienteered OK. Hesitant on the way to 5 but hit it fine. Off to the left on 8 but realized I was too far up the hill and corrected (2 min). Got to the correct reentrant for 9 but turned uphill - the control was about 50 meters downhill (3 min).
