Orienteering race 17:04 [4] 2.2 km (7:45 / km)
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Sprint at Woodford/Iona. I had a really scrappy start to the course! First of all I was kind of confused by the buildings and paths to the first control, everything came up so quickly. Then I messed up the second by going down the wrong alleyway... though it was very hard to tell which one the control was actually in from looking at the map. I really had to look closely. But anyway, after than things went a bit better. I was with Amber and Piret for some of the controls. I lost quite a bit of time hesitating around the few controls near the spectator... I guess I just wasn't thinking quickly enough and the controls came up so fast! Then at the end I was so tired... so probably slowed down quite a lot.

But it was such a cool map and a very fun sprint :)

Running 44:24 [3] 8.5 km (5:13 / km)

Last run before nationals - I went out to West Tamaki, along it, then back down Roberta and Riddell Rd. It was a nice run though my legs felt a little heavy. Good fun :)

Road cycling 1:24:20 [3]

Out to One Tree Hill, up it, and back home again. Quite a nice ride although I was always on the verge of being too cold. Probably should have worn a thermal or something! There was a headwind on the way out there too. Going up to the summit felt ok but a runner passed me while I was going up the very steep bit near the top! I'm not actually too surprised to tell the truth.

Oh and it's so nice how the road has been resurfaced at the top of Abbott's Way - it's not all juddery anymore :)

A run around St Heliers and Glendowie, just a whole lot of random streets. Felt quite good though it is a bit colder than usual today and very windy!

Orienteering race 2:02:00 [3] **** 8.1 km (15:04 / km)
17c shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

OY1 at Huriwai - where people who think they are fit go to be rudely disabused of that notion! I am very embarrassed by this time, especially considering the fact that my navigation was actually good today... didn't really make any mistakes, only a few hesitations, and a few extra twists and turns on the first 2 controls. There were some legs where I thought my route choice was pretty terrible, but then again, I am pretty sure the other options weren't great either! And there were a few where I was very happy with my route choices - to number 12 especially, and to 5, 8 and 11 were quite good too. The main issue today was just how shockingly slow I was... had to walk so much, it was so steep and ruthless. It was even rougher and steeper than last time I think. Anyway, I'm glad my orienteering was ok and happy I survived the course :)

Note

Was going to go to drills with Mike this morning but then wimped out because it was pouring with rain. So instead I read books on my iPad in bed all morning :) It was absolutely fantastic.

Running warm up/down 19:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Night O training in Woodhill south with Gene, Matt and Ross. 9 minutes warm up to the start and then 10 minutes warm down at the end. It was very very dark!

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Night O training in Woodhill - very tricky! It would have helped to have some controls out just to confirm my final location but still good anyway. At night it is hard to distinguish the unmapped bumps and depressions from the mapped ones... they all start looking a bit the same. And contouring at night is very dangerous when the features are vague - better to trust the compass! I skipped a few controls as I didn't want to hold the others up, which turned out to be a good move as apparently the map was a bit questionable in that area and Matt and Ross spent a lot of time there... was also extra tricky in the dark. Overall, it was excellent training!
