orienteering race 57:00 [5]

Maroc event at Inchmarnoch, Brown course "middle" distance 6.7km..... Mostly clean run, just legs totally shagged from race yesterday. Struggled to cross brashings and didn't attempt to run up hills.
Still pushed on trying to feel "strong" and orienteering smoothly.
Pleased to still be running by end, 3 mins behind Dan and 3 ahead of Rob H.
Significant thinning in some blocks, map will need to be revised before selection race next year!

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

cycling 30:00 [2]

Forgot to add this - cycle from Dinnet to Cambus bridge and back after event.

Hill Race race 31:31 [5]

Braemar Games Hill Race
the big one for this summer! Had aimed at this from a few weeks ago (and taken things easy this week). Wasn't feeling sparkly but this is a proper hill race - brutally steep uphill and full terrain downhill thrash on return, out and out speed wasn't going to help me as much as strength to grind up the hill and try to hold it together on the descent.
Set off out of field in about 25-30th place, then started passing people from the car park onwards, tucked in behind Steph and tried to match her strength up the hill. Managed to stay reasonably close and must have overtaken 15 guys on the hill (some wearing flat shoes - so they wouldn't be a threat on the descent!). reached cairns about 50m down on her and only about 100m behind Clare. Set off through heather and soon caught one guy, then basically held the same gap to Clare and Steph the rest of the descent (I know I should be able to catch and pass them..... but no I can't). Into arena just behind them and finished 31-31. Chuffed with race and how it felt. Checked old times - 24-3-something in 1984 and 25-17 in 1994........ lost a little bit since then ;-)
Scotia won in 25-30

Planning to do Mrven in 3 weeks, so maybe a couple of 1 minute hill sessions and a couple of intervals between now and then to try to improve climbing and descending.

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

steady run 3:20:00 [3]

Checking out day 1 of run Up The Highlands with Neil and Ruth. Drove first 11 miles and started running at lunch stop - only 14 miles to do from Kirkton of Glenisla to Glen Clova. Big fast forest track for first hour then into plantation for a few hundred metres, over fence and onto moorland. Big climb out of Glen Prosen to hte Kilbo Pass and walk/jog down rough track.

Legs tired from start so happy to plod along. Weather was fantastic - started a bit cloudy but ended clear skies sun and great views to Lochnagar massif and out to Glen Shee hills. Hope weather on the run itself is as good!
Lessons learnt - start slowly and carry enough food/water - struggling for water by end, nothing from Glen Prosen onwards and the streams there were not attractive due to major road building works in the glen.
The whole 25 miles (and oodles of climb) will be a real test!
