x-c skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Track from ~Lochnagar distillery to Glen Muick, with S. Up to high point then down to bridge and back. Mostly very pleasant skiing, only a few crunchy bits. Lovely day with clear skies and great views.

orienteering 51:00 [5]

DNC Shooting Greens, set off early - first out on long course so pleasant quiet plod round the course. Feeling better than expected but right glute still very achey and right calf still tight. No real errors, a couple of wee hesitations but pleased with what I managed - about 5 mins down on MG.

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Went out to shadow RW and CW round short course. Not best decision ever but managed to get round without falling over from lack of food and getting too cold (though it was close at times).

steady run 43:00 [3]

Deeside Runners out Tarland Way to bridge, then rest did hill session while S and I carried on for a bit and back, met them at end of 5th interval so kept plodding back. Right glute awkward and sore on downhills, right lower ham right, right calf has big tight lump in it... bit of a mess really.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Not sure how session would go given I was struggling to walk. But was fine and little of the session caused problems except when using toes - both big toes very battered and tender (dobbs and sealskin socks so shoes tight). Feeling generally easier and better after.

Note

most aspects improved later in day but right glute very painful and feels weak, almost need to poke it to get it firing so I can walk normally. Not sure about DNC on Wednesday.

Hill Race 9:00:00 [3]

Marmot Dark Nights B course with S. Didn’t feel great at start and seemed to walk a lot. Weather bad start - rain and wind, then got cooler and sleet/snow, finally cleared up and moon came out - magic

Note

Checking splits- we were fastest on 2 legs, one of which was our biggest error on the night (5) - guess others must have made worse errors. Losing time from 8 all the way to the finish with struggling legs and sore feet. Last leg (15-16) illustrates this - we lost 11 minutes to fastest team - on a downhill track/road run.

Friday Jan 25, 2019 #

Note

Another rest day.

Thursday Jan 24, 2019 #

Note

Rest day before weekend (and another one planned tomorrow).

steady run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Short warm-up then...

orienteering race 40:00 [5]

DNC Scotly. A bit TD4-ish (too many track options) and so legging it fast then compass in to boulders was the order of the day (night?). Ran right past 2, hidden in middle of group of boulders, 1 min lost. Overshot 4 slightly then drifted around a wee bit, 1 min lost. Rest just a few hesitations - controls hung really low, didn't actually see about half the reflectors...
2-30 down on the boy, getting worse.

Tuesday Jan 22, 2019 #

steady run warm up/down 32:00 [3]

Deeside Runners to Rhu-na-haven Road and bak after.

pace run 17:00 [4]

Binned idea of intervals due to icy pavements and roads, did 2 x long tempo pace instead, Rhu-na-haven Road to east, Bridgeview Place and then A93 to Rnh R. 8-49 and 8-29 (second one ran on road for most of A93 rather than crunchy, icy pavement). Pleased with pacing, nice steady effort without busting a gut.
Right calf a bit achy at end, need to do some massage and maybe rolling over next few days to make sure it is fine for Saturday/Sunday.

Monday Jan 21, 2019 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

good session.

Sunday Jan 20, 2019 #

orienteering 50:00 [3]

Hanging (30 mins) and collecting (20mins) controls at club training - all on paths 'cos planner was lazy for TD4 & 5.

Saturday Jan 19, 2019 #

Note

cod at Logie Steading all day then Deeside Runners diner then tidying up planning for training session and printing maps at midnight - must plan further ahead next time (like always...)

Friday Jan 18, 2019 #

steady run warm up/down 40:00 [3]

Over to DAP and then lap of first loop of race to check course. Feeling a bit meh after pilates (always do the day after...).

Cross-country race 44:00 [5]

Dess Night Race. Started a bit quicker than previous races but was overhauled by plenty on the first hill. Right calf felt a bit tight on forest road near end of first loop so eased back a fraction on descent. OK on flats but felt it a bit on uphills on second loop. Sore by send of third loop and tightened up quite a bit after race. Hobbled back over hill to home.
Rest required and some gentle stretching. Nothing on till next weekend...

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Fill in session after missing Monday 7th.

Wednesday Jan 16, 2019 #

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

To start, from finish

orienteering race 40:00 [5]

DNC Sluie, cold night (almost snowing at start and chill wind), decent run apart from losing height on 6-7 (1 minute) and then stuffing up 12 - again miss-read height from a wee spur and ended up too high. Many people missed this but I should have read map better.
3rd overall and managed to beat E so happy!

Tuesday Jan 15, 2019 #

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Up Fungle then slalom through nice bits of Birsemore checking a few map comments. Lovely forest... just lovely ;-)
Felt OK on up - took it very steady, OK in terrain apart from steeper hills.

Monday Jan 14, 2019 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Swiss balls... - equipment not a comment on Federer ;-)

Sunday Jan 13, 2019 #

steady run warm up/down 4:00 [3]

To start with DT

orienteering 53:00 [5]

Test run a BNOC course (in daylight so cheating...). Legs felt weary and uphills extra steep.

Saturday Jan 12, 2019 #

steady run 44:00 [3]

Deeside Way to west, across A93 at old chapel, along road towards ILPH then cut east through lovely forest to road, back to A93 and up Deeside Way. Feeling fairly lethargic at start but going OK by end, legs less weary than last couple of days.

Friday Jan 11, 2019 #

steady run 45:00 [3]

With S, Deeside Way, riverbank (upstream). Past Warren Cottage and back via fields. Still a bit tired but pleasant out. Amazingly high debris line on river bank - not sure when the flood was.

Thursday Jan 10, 2019 #

steady run 35:00 [3]

Lap of Dess woods with E, feeling weary.

Wednesday Jan 9, 2019 #

Note

Surveying 2.5 hours. nice bright sunny day but cold in shade.

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

jog to start plus a bit extra.

orienteering race 43:00 [5]

Deeside Night Cup at Crathes. Nice course - 2 laps of west detailed part of the area.
New Lidar derived map.
Decent run technically, one time loss due to heading off along wrong path, but feeling terrible physically- heavy legged, tired, fuzzy-headed.

Tuesday Jan 8, 2019 #

Note

5hours surveying, cold but bright and sunny.

Monday Jan 7, 2019 #

Note

5.5 hours surveying, windy and a nasty shower midway through but very mild.

steady run 28:00 [3]

2laps Doune Ponds with MD, nice chatty pace.

Sunday Jan 6, 2019 #

Note

Helping at event at Glen O'Dee, walked to/from start plus wandered out to collect a control. No desire to run so took the day off. Surveying next few days so rest probably sensible.

Saturday Jan 5, 2019 #

orienteering 40:00 [3]

Placing controls for local event tomorrow at Glen O'Dee. Pleasant run out and back with only 8 stakes :-)

Friday Jan 4, 2019 #

Note

Walk up hill to west of Linn of Quoich. Pleasant day out, temperatures all over the place, cold at bottom, warmer up top, then cold wind!
Legs a bit weary.

Thursday Jan 3, 2019 #

steady run 58:00 [3]

Ben Rinnes with S and E. steady grind up the hill, lots of people around (New Year resolutions??), +5c at bottom but icy cold and loads of hoar frost at summit. Hung around till E arrived (walked up), then back down fairly quickly.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2019 #

steady run 42:00 [3]

Lap of Loch Kinord with S. Legs feeling very weary especially uphill, but also general tiredness.

Swimming 10:00 [3]

Loch Kinord swim, initially felt desperately cold (it was 0C) but got through the worst 2 minutes and was OK for the rest of the swim.

Tuesday Jan 1, 2019 #

steady run warm up/down 30:00 [3]

Warm up at Aonach Mor

Hill Race race 33:00 [5]

Aonach Mor race, started well back and gradually overtook lots of people. Nearly got AW at the top but he could sprint a lot quicker than me!
Tough run - apparently we did the wrong route - no marking and I was relying on others to know the way... hill-runners:-)
Prize giving at mountain restaurant was a bit low-key didn’t even stop the Muzak so couldn’t hear a thing!
