Swimming 5:00 [2]

Early morning dip in quarry pond, very refreshing.

orienteering 35:00 [3]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club, hot, as usual :-)
Left knee sore on knee cap - painful to bend, running not too bad. Just feeling very, very heavy legged from surveying.

Wednesday May 30, 2018 #

Note

7 hours surveying - hot, but mostly in woodland so a bit sheltered.

Swimming 5:00 [2]

Quarry pond before bivvying out.

Tuesday May 29, 2018 #

Note

6.5 hours surveying. Cloudy for much of early part - saved me from overheating!

Monday May 28, 2018 #

orienteering 1:10:00 [3]

Checking controls at Crathes for event in June. Roasting hot day, car reading 24C on way home.

Swimming 14:00 [2]

Quarry pond with Sarah, very pleasant 3 laps taking care not to inhale any tadpoles ;-) Loads of newts and damsel-flies as well. Summer well and truly here. Car reading 26.5C in Aboyne...

Sunday May 27, 2018 #

orienteering race 40:00 [5]

Scottish Relays handicap 11, 3rd leg. Went out a bit down on leaders and possibly pushed too hard, 4 misses (including 2 where I saw the control flag but firstly misread number and secondly thought it was over next hill... a bit amateurish). Good thing was that I was out-running my navigation and its a long time since that has happened :-)

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Decent amount of jogging about assembly field and in change-over pen, legs OK-ish but left knee stiff and achey on upper outer part, will stretch a bit and see what develops.

Saturday May 26, 2018 #

orienteering race 54:00 [5]

Scottish Champs M55. Feeling a bit lethargic 9no coffee or too late in day with a 2-39 start?) but started Ok, steady and clean to number 1 in light green, then onto moor and bog, pushing where I could and trying not to get demotivated when I had to walk. Navigation on moor and in Keppernach was fairly straight forward, tiring by end but keep tempo as high as possible. Pleased with win.
Good day for Maroc with 6 Scottish Champions and an M21E native champion :-)

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

lots of bits of jogging round feeling Meh...

Friday May 25, 2018 #

orienteering 20:00 [3]

Collecting controls after schools session. Not feeling too bad considering standing around in hot sun all day.

Thursday May 24, 2018 #

orienteering 40:00 [3]

Hanging controls at Torphantrick, lovely warm day, but feeling pretty slow and lethargic.

Swimming 11:00 [2]

Loch Kinord, t-shirt and undies. Got shakes after but was fine while swimming. A bit of a change from February or even last month!

Wednesday May 23, 2018 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Hanging controls for schools festival, lovely cool morning - turned into a scorching sunny day :-)

orienteering 40:00 [3]

Collecting controls (2 loops), still warm at 7pm.

Note

World Orienteering Day - over 300 at Dess over the course of the day, hard work at times but inspiring to see so many school children enjoy themselves, including a blind lad who orienteered using a specially made map...

Tuesday May 22, 2018 #

Note

Surveying 2.5 hours, feeling brighter. Left leg still sore but less so.

Monday May 21, 2018 #

Note

5hours surveying, very tired.
Top of left shin (just under knee) has a very sore spot. Felt it last week a couple of times but eased off then. Maybe physio if mot improving in next few days.

Sunday May 20, 2018 #

orienteering race 37:00 [5]

British relays, Torphantrick. M40 3rd leg. Early on felt good then tried to think “strong” then just tried to survive:-)
Legs empty rather than sore but need some recovery this week before Scottish.

steady run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Poor belated attempt at warm-up when in changeover pen.

Saturday May 19, 2018 #

Note

At red start all day, feeling pretty drained especially after 3 trips carrying kit up hill.
Great day for it - all must have been impressed by forest and weather:-)

Friday May 18, 2018 #

Note

Travel home, back mid afternoon, not feeling like any exercise ;-)

Thursday May 17, 2018 #

steady run 4:00:00 [3]

Run across Scotland, day 5.
Done it - scorching sun and heat in second part, glad of lots of sun-cream. best weather I can remember for the whole trip.
Plus all 11 runners finished!

Wednesday May 16, 2018 #

steady run 5:00:00 [3]

Run across Scotland, day 4, Glen africa to Morvich. The big one, great day, sun, light wind and stunning scenery, what more to ask for?
No deer but still plenty of snow patches on higher slopes.

Tuesday May 15, 2018 #

steady run 1:44:00 [3]

Run across Scotland, day 3. Lovely day, cool, no rain and plenty of snow still on the hills. Legs fine just a wee bit achey in lower hamstrings.

Monday May 14, 2018 #

steady run 3:40:00 [3]

Run across Scotland, Day 2 (for the pedants). Drumnadrochit to Tomich, 17miles - or 18 - depending on whose GPS you choose :-) Nice day, some cloud but plenty of sun - the Aussie in the group got sunburn

Sunday May 13, 2018 #

steady run 4:10:00 [3]

Run across Scotland, guiding group of 11. A bit damp at start but cleared up nicely and plenty of sun from about a quarter way through. Legs OK, felt them a bit at end of morning (13 miles and lots of road) but fine in afternoon.

Note

Thursday May 10, 2018 #

Lovely sunny day and warm in the sun.

Hanging and collecting controls in Ladywood - lovely little bit of wood. Pleasant afternoon, but legs feeling v tired. Time for some recovery before Sunday.

Wednesday May 9, 2018 #

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Hanging controls in the back yard (Dess Woods)

orienteering intervals 12:00 [5]

Moving a few controls for tomorrow’s academy festival + needing some speed work so turned it into interval session, ended up as 6 x approx 2 mins with 2 mins recovery, first 3 uphill, then roughly contouring then down and finally uphill. Certainly feeling breathing from the start and legs struggling by the end so session must have done something good!

steady run 14:00 [3]

Between intervals and wee bit back home at end.

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Hanging controls for evening training session for local running club, Tyrebagger but almost all on tracks so quite pleasant:-)

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Collecting controls from training session. A bit tired but legs still working OK

Tuesday May 8, 2018 #

steady run warm up/down 34:00 [3]

Long way down hill (by waterfall) and grovel direct route back.

Thursday May 3, 2018 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club. Rained during session - not allowed!

Note

Saw Mark Beaumont's talk in Banchory - he's a big guy , 6'3" and 90kg - so hardly an archetypal shape of cyclist, but obviously he can go far deeper for longer than most mortals:

Wednesday May 2, 2018 #

Note

Surveying 6.5 hours. Tired

orienteering race 26:00 [5]

Forest Sprint, Tliquhillie. Reasonably clean run, a bit right on 1 (track angle?) 20-30 seconds, drifted right on 4 (avoiding climb!) 30-40 seconds and ran towards start from last control... maybe 15 seconds. Also went through some semi-open... bad mistake it was grim! maybe 40 seconds.
Feeling surprisingly strong but a bit slow on climbs.

Note

hmm, results show I wasn't anywhere near moving quickly enough - I probably was very heavy legged from surveying.

Tuesday May 1, 2018 #

Note

Surveying 6 hours, tired by end.
