Note

3 hours surveying. Feeling fine at start but tired by end - possibly partly hunger. Another nice sunny day in Deeside but with a chilly northerly wind.

orienteering race 50:00 [5]

Deeside Night Cup, Tyrebagger. Hummed and hawed then decided to go (as much to give E a lift as for my own interest). However felt Ok once there and quite enjoyed the race - a couple of time losses (one due to total incompetence and failing to check map carefully enough and second on hte usual spot of hills with big spruce trees and failing to go high enough up a spur to see the control. All in all not too bad a run, wait to see what the youngsters do as they speed round and see what the embarrassment factor is!
Legs felt better running than expected - and hip/glute wasn't a problem at all even with a few jarring slips and falling into holes. Maybe the weekend did some good?!

steady run warm up/down 8:00 [3]

To start.

Tuesday Jan 30, 2018 #

Note

Surveying 1.5 hours - very slow wander along new fences and old removed fences. Pleasant. Back much improved and toes not as bad either. Still don't fancy running...

Swimming 5:00 [1]

River Dee at Aboyne bridge. Had hoped to get into the lochs but they are still largely frozen over and I don't fancy breaking ice then swimming. River high and current ridiculously fast, once over, upstream and back, Breathing going a bit crazy when trying to cross main current - hard work and also a bit stressful with splashing waves and buffeting.
Hope I can get into hte lochs again next month, they've been mostly frozen for several weeks now.

Monday Jan 29, 2018 #

Note

Massage - about 1.5 hours, lots of work on lower back and glutes plus a little on my shoulders (rucksack tightness!). Hams and quads surprisingly undamaged.
Feeling better after but back is still feeling like it wants to spasm if I bend over or twist too quickly.
Feet not as painful (as Sunday evening) but both big toes have taken a pounding and very tender to put pressure through them or even bend them.
Might be a while to recover fully.

Note

A couple of slow walks - to try to ease back/legs. Total time of apron 2.5 hours but only a few km!

Sunday Jan 28, 2018 #

Note

Pretty close to totally wrecked.

orienteering race 10:09:15 [4]

Marmot Dark Mountain B class with S (her birthday present to herself!). Forest of Bowland.
Not sure how things would pan out but we started steadily and pushed a bit when we could (not often). 38.5km straight line, 2000+m of climb. Ground soaking wet over large expanses and heather, dead bracken etc in other parts, tough going.
Started 2120 and finished at0730 just as dawn was creeping over the village. Really enjoyed the first 4 hours or so then things gradually got tougher and the rain started at 0430. We’re surprised to be told we were 2nd to finish the B and that all other B teams were a long way behind. We ended up 2nd

orienteering race 56:00 [5]

DNC Balnagowan. Tried a longer warm-up but not really up for it. OK to 1, missed 2 (short then left) S caught me here, 3 OK, 4 very hesitant and seemed further than shown - checking after i'm sure it was a re-entrant too far north - in plantation rather than in birch with a clearing. 5, too low and faffed, distracted by JW zooming past and turning the wrong way... S got ahead. Bumbled across valley to 6 but saw S ahead, then spiked 7, 8 and 9, long leg to 10 was Ok - just felt crap moving through terrain (I can't claim running!) and 11 OK except for zig-zags through windblown lines of trees.
Overall 3rd - just 8 secs behind FW... could have been!

steady run 10:00 [3]

Better wram-up. Right leg a bit tight and awkward, need to work on back loosening and other exercises.
Too late and tired to do after.

Tuesday Jan 23, 2018 #

steady run 1:05:00 [3]

With BP, Aboyne castle woods, golf course, Lodge on Loch golf course, Coull and back to castle. Very easy pace and lots of chat. Right groin noticeable but never painful. Legs definitely recovered a bit from yesterdays physio pummelling.

Note

Surveying 2.5 hours. Old map pretty dreadful in places (polite way of putting it!), taking longer than planned or expected...

Physio exercises 10:00 [1]

New exercises, shorter, easier, whats not to like ;-)

steady run 26:00 [3]

A wee run while waiting for E to appear. Injuries felt awkward but not painful. Progress.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

A tentative try at my physio exercises. Success, a little bit of discomfort from right groin but not getting worse.
Seeing physio on Monday.

Friday Jan 19, 2018 #

Note

rest day, hamstring and groin feeling easier today.

Thursday Jan 18, 2018 #

Note

3 hours surveying. Injuries not too bad, took things cautiously but moving reasonably smoothly albeit with short steps to avoid overstitching anything.

Wednesday Jan 17, 2018 #

Note

Surveying 3.5 hours
Bit of an injury situation - a large stone that I stood on to cross a wall rolled away as I stretched my left leg across the wall. Left hamstring stretched and painful, right groin stretched and painful plus lower back/pelvis jarred badly.

orienteering race 50:00 [4]

Deeside night cup Balmedie. Tried to run injury off, hobbled round at half speed, not massively painful but awkward and unable to stride out.
Not very promising...

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Tuesday Jan 16, 2018 #

Intervals 20:00 [5]

Kinker to east along Deeside Way 5x4+2. Started slower than wished for - but legs not moving any quicker! Faster on return intervals. Good start to intervals for the new year. Right leg a bit awkward at times but improved over Nov/Dec sessions.

steady run warm up/down 38:00 [3]

To Kinker and back by Deeside Way. Met runner (just moved into new houses at Kinker) chatted half way back home then left her as she waited for her large Chocolate Lab.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Aching during session - intervals have done something to the legs and glutes :-)

Monday Jan 15, 2018 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Matwork for first session back. Right glute working better than previously - I blame the physio exercises ;-)

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Warm-up with TD5 group and collecting a few markers with S.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Definitely getting easier.

Saturday Jan 13, 2018 #

steady run 1:30:00 [3]

Peters Hill with Deeside Runners group, steady pace to top - struggling a bit but managed to run almost all (apart from snow drifts). Strong winds from S and much cloud so idea of Mount Battock abandoned by all! Back to riverside path - feeling fairly good and right groin only a hint of cramping towards end. Much improved on last time I did this run.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Friday Jan 12, 2018 #

steady run 1:24:00 [3]

Home to Aboyne alone riverbank and back vis Deeside way. Pleasant run on small paths and riverbank path, river low and mostly quite calm - lots of shingle banks exposed from 2 years ago floods, still impressive.
Right groin got niggly near end - nothing serious and it wore off soon after finishing. Maybe due to running with slightly exaggerated knee lift.

orienteering race 55:00 [5]

DNC Coull, planned to get things right and avoid misses, failed on that - 3 little misses and one whopper (3 mins+). Really struggled at start with terrain, gradually got into it and going much better by end than start - maybe need longer warm-up?
Coull is rough.

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Tuesday Jan 9, 2018 #

steady run 30:00 [3]

With S, head torch run, down to riverbank, along and back up Deeside way - most of ice gone, just a few lurking patches.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Monday Jan 8, 2018 #

Intervals intervals 20:00 [5]

With S round Dess Woods and fields beyond seeking ice free surfaces. 6 intervals mostly uphill of varying duration. Didn't feel great overall but right leg working much better than before Christmas.

steady run warm up/down 32:00 [3]

Decent warm-up and between intervals - mostly downhill to set up next interval uphill.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Definitely feeling easier than when I started doing them :-)

Sunday Jan 7, 2018 #

steady run 52:00 [3]

with S and E lap of Loch Kinord... a bit icy but all wearing dobbs so much fun in running past walkers struggling to keep upright.
Legs a bit tired but mostly OK and right leg didn't give any hassles, maybe physio stuff is working - will find out in the next week. Here's hoping :-)

Saturday Jan 6, 2018 #

Note

Had planned a quick cheeky morning jaunt up to Roque Nublo from La Goleta (would only have taken 30 mins or so)... but was blowing a gale and pissing rain so bypassed it and headed to airport really - stopped in Aguimes for an early morning coffee then 5 hours on plane:-(

Friday Jan 5, 2018 #

Note

Long walk along ridge to west of La Joncal - cold at start but soon warmed up in sun! Missed first to p -too steep on approach side, over second and then I baulked at scramble on third... then discovered we could have reached it from far side, too late so had lunch and headed back along big forest road.

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

Thursday Jan 4, 2018 #

Note

Walk along ridge - lovely pine forest- first real forest seen on trip! Out about 3 hours

Physio exercises 15:00 [2]

steady run 1:10:00 [3]

With S from Ayacata along road and up to Roque Nublo - same route as yesterday - still a beautiful route and deserted. Reached top about 5 mins too late for sunset but got afterglow on horizon, then torches on and a whiz back along to La Goleta car park and down hill to Ayacata - magic!

Wednesday Jan 3, 2018 #

Walk around during the day plus after tea.
