orienteering race 1:01:00 [3]

Dark Thistle, Doonhill & Fairy Knowe. Tough going, lots of unpleasant spruce brash. Struggling to move at any speed.
Last section in birch was lovely in comparison. Pleased to finish in one piece.

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Thursday Mar 30, 2017 #

orienteering 21:00 [3]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club. Leg a bit better - tried a few faster sections. Definitely better on uphills, so I guess lots of hills is the next step!

Wednesday Mar 29, 2017 #

steady run 30:00 [3]

Warm-up and then running between sections of sprint training in Aboyne form Talent Squad. Right leg still tender and not moving smoothly at anything above steady pace (tried a few strides in warm-up), so decided to duck the session and just did map handing out/start timing.

Tuesday Mar 28, 2017 #

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

Dinnet along railway to Cambus then along drove road to top of Vat Burn, down parallel path and back across the moor.
Right leg didn't enjoy start on flat track and got crampy feeling in shin, clunking was apparent several times. However persisted and eventually leg seemed to settle down, pushed through Cambus on uphill and back across moor once down the hill.
Very tired after.

pace run 23:00 [4]

Approx amount of higher intensity running.

orienteering 30:00 [1]

Hanging controls for after-school club at Ballater. Feeling utterly drained and struggling to get legs moving.
Collecting controls after was no better.

Felt a bit better after a lot of water and food - maybe just fuel/hydration issues.

Monday Mar 27, 2017 #

steady run 18:00 [3]

Hill of Banchory, cold but sunny morning.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Matwork - luxury!

Sunday Mar 26, 2017 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Collecting controls at local event at Corsedarder. Lovely hot sunny day.

Saturday Mar 25, 2017 #

orienteering 46:00 [3]

Hanging controls in Cambus for squad training - such a great area. Had a bit of a shock when I realised I'd got a contour only version to hang with... made things more interesting!

Friday Mar 24, 2017 #

orienteering 45:00 [3]

Hanging controls for local event on Sunday. Nice forest, shame legs still feeling drained.

Thursday Mar 23, 2017 #

orienteering 1:55:00 [3]

Control hanging on Muir of Dinnet. What a superb area! Tired by end.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club.

stretching 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Mar 22, 2017 #

orienteering 1:07:00 [4]

Hanging controls in Sluie.

orienteering race 34:00 [4]

WETT near Banchory. Tough forest and legs shot from Sluie, so cut at 4 (out of 6). Too much track running to be really enjoyable, though the forest was so mashed by the machines that terrain running wasn't much fun either!

Tuesday Mar 21, 2017 #

Note

6 hours surveying, feeling good at start and enjoying the terrain, knackered by end!

stretching 10:00 [1]

Monday Mar 20, 2017 #

steady run 12:00 [3]

not much time for my warm-up at Hill of Banchory but nice morning. Legs a bit tired

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

with S to Aboyne for shopping and to help at school cross country race, no race today - next week OOPS!
Legs a bit heavy on hill to house - need more hills for strength!

Sunday Mar 19, 2017 #

orienteering race 1:04:00 [5]

Local event Potarch. Brown course 7.4km. Felt OK in warm-up and started well with no errors on first few. Struggled up hill to 5 then OK on top of hill and run to west. Clean through birch scrub at west end. Good back over main hill then into new area - got distracted by lines and ran almost to 19 instead of 16 (2 mins lost), going OK through rest till second last (22), didn't read map carefully enough and so dropped too low and saw wrong clearing, struggled to make sense until decided to cut losses and headed uphill to sharper re-entrant, worked out location and straight into control...
Managede to scrape a win over TG - no not that TG... the Gramp one ;-)
Please with how I managed to run most of the course and still felt physically ok at end - but mentally tired and two stupid errors, both fairly basic.
Return to fitness continues, I think the Wednesday evening sessions are being useful as tempo sessions. One more 6-Day area to revise (and its beast!) then less survey and hopefully some better time for physical training, including intervals.

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Steady run to start, had planned some stretching but was able to start straight away (Brown not so popular!). A few slight twinges from right hamstring/hip but nothing to worry about.

Saturday Mar 18, 2017 #

Note

3.5 hours surveying, a bit dreich but rain never came to much.

Friday Mar 17, 2017 #

steady run 2:25:00 [3]

With S, over Clachnaben, towards Battock but turned back after 70 mins because I was feeling wasted by then - food helped a little - back over Mount Shade (nasty, nasty climb!). Legs very tired by half way and pretty screwed by end. Felt left foot a couple of times so getting better quickly, right ham gave a few aches and almost nervy twitched near end, but also a big improvement over 2 weeks ago. So on the whole fairly positive that my body is healing, just need to work on aerobics and leg strength.

stretching 10:00 [1]

Needed!

Thursday Mar 16, 2017 #

Note

1.5 hours surveying. Finished another map - well still got a load of drawing up but physical work done.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls for after-school club. Left foot tender and didn't like any jarring. Nothing major - a couple of days should see it right.

Wednesday Mar 15, 2017 #

Note

5.5 hours surveying. Getting there.

orienteering 35:00 [5]

WETT (Wednesday evening technical training) session Glen Davan. 4.4km. Set off fast and in decent position, then tweaked ankle between 3 & 4 which made me focus more on it. Struggled for a few then caught E and F and ran most of the course with them.
Mostly good map reading - but near end snagged head torch and loosened head band and twisted it, so struggled from there to the end holding head torch on! Compass was OK and only ran to a couple of wrong controls - 24 controls and lots of loops!
Still a fantastic area, map starting to show its age, shame there isn't any Lidar covering it!

stretching 10:00 [1]

Tuesday Mar 14, 2017 #

Note

4.5 hours surveying.

cycling 20:00 [3]

Down to Kinker and back with E - to pick up Chinese carry-out.

stretching 10:00 [1]

Monday Mar 13, 2017 #

steady run 18:00 [3]

Hill of Banchory, ringing the changes - opposite direction to normal! Legs tired but hip/bum not sore.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Note

5.5 hours surveying. Started very slowly! and just kept plodding along. Lovely day and nice bit of forest.

Sunday Mar 12, 2017 #

steady run 1:34:00 [4]

Long terrain run in Tentsmuir. Started steadily along north dune line then out to open towards point and turned south. Back inland and onto main track (ran on verge too save legs) to ice-house, then turned inland again at next bridge onto new map and back through the competitors. Very tired by end. Right hip/bum achey in car on return trip but nothing too bad.

Saturday Mar 11, 2017 #

orienteering 48:00 [3]

Checking controls at Corsedarder for event in 2 weeks. Pleasant run out, struggling on hills - legs lacking strength. Right hip etc seems mostly OK, a tiny bit of clunking on return along track. Seems to be improving each day just now.

Friday Mar 10, 2017 #

Note

5 hours surveying. Tired by end.

Thursday Mar 9, 2017 #

Note

1 hour surveying, then most of day in town faffing and helped at after-school club with S. Too drained and hungry to train when got home at 6-30.

Wednesday Mar 8, 2017 #

Note

Sure ey 2 hours - before 6-Day meeting in Aberdeen.

orienteering 37:00 [5]

Night training Shooting Greens - what a beast of an area at night, even with the bracken down the rocks are grim in much of the area... lost count of the number of times I put a leg into a knee or hip deep hole. Managed to avoid any injury, so bonus.
Burnt off b yhte youngsters on first section downhill till 4 (they just hurled themselves down slopes I was mincing down). But caught them up at 6 (partly due to my stopping short at 5), then stayed with them as they mostly missed the technical controls (large boulders on the lower slope) and was involved i the race to the finish.
Good points - I was orienteering fairly smoothly, my compass work was better than last week, I only missed one control (no flags out).
Bad - I was desperately slow on uphills and also downhills (for different reasons), my compass work wasn't good enough.

steady run warm up/down 24:00 [3]

10 to start, got clunking after about 4-5 minutes but not too badly. 14 back from finish - feeling OK leg-wise, just very unfit on long climb back to car park.

Note

Leg/hip felt better tonight than yesterday, so perhaps running in terrain is mobilising things. Will try to do more terrain running over next few days and see if this helps.

Tuesday Mar 7, 2017 #

Note

Surveying 4 hours, feeling tired and wooly-headed from the start, struggled to cover much ground.

Fartlek 35:00 [3]

Lap of Dess Woods, largely in terrain as right side doesn't like path running. Once on fields did slalom across the ruined walls - good fun and also a lot more aerobic than plodding along. Hip/pelvis still clunking on every step when on a flat track.

Monday Mar 6, 2017 #

steady run 10:00 [3]

Wee run at Hill of Banchory - hip/pelvis clicking on right side, well more like a clunk, on every step.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session, tough.

Sunday Mar 5, 2017 #

steady run 45:00 [3]

Headed west along Deeside Way and across to Boddomend road, planning to come back via roads in the Lumphanan bowl but right leg not comfortable on flat track so cut back from highpoint on road through bogs... to DAP road and up through woods.
Something clicking in my right half - not sure what but suspect it might be scare-illiac or lower back.
Hamstring itself is definitely improving.

Saturday Mar 4, 2017 #

Note

Rest day, legs feeling bit wrecked and right foot sore - probably from dodgy running style to protect hamstring. Anyway a minging day so no sleep lost over not getting out ;-)

Friday Mar 3, 2017 #

steady run 2:20:00 [3]

First long run for a long, long time. With S, Bridge of Ess to Guard, Fungle track then right across big bog and back down Firmouth track to Glen Tanar ands back along south drive.
Uphills generally OK hamstring-wise but could feel it on downs (not badly painful but aware of it and twisting knee/lower leg action). Started to feel distance at far end (!) after 85 mins or so and had to stay very focussed to keep moving by the end.
Pleased to have done it and (7 hours later) don't seem to have caused any problems.

Thursday Mar 2, 2017 #

Note

3 hours surveying, another sunny day in paradise (Deeside).

Note

Second visit to physio - set up before last night's training. Felt a bit of a fraud but he managed to find very sore spots and then gave me some exercises, so money well spent.

Wednesday Mar 1, 2017 #

Note

3 hours surveying

orienteering 46:00 [4]

Night training Banchory East. Started with low expectations off hamstring and how things would pan out. Turned out terrain running was mostly fine (I was very careful in trashy areas and downhill) and I had almost no problems with it. Navigation was a bit creaky at times but the juniors were even more all over the shop and I kept catching them up :-) Burnt off near end with some easier legs.
Pleased to run so well.
