Note

4 hours surveying, another dreadful day - sunny, warm, lovely area, Lidar base map ;-)

Intervals 13:00 [5]

Deeside way 1+1 set - aimed for 12 then one for luck (blitzed it then collapsed in a quivering heap). Felt better than for a long time doing intervals, not sure why - just off 2 weeks of lots of long slow running - maybe thats what I need?

steady run warm up/down 40:00 [3]

Steady down hill on Deeside Way than a few drills and strides to loosen legs. Bit of a grovel back home after the intervals.

Monday May 30, 2016 #

steady run 14:00 [3]

Easy run round Hill of Banchory.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Mathwork, tried not working too hard - to avoid any issues of right bum nerve problems.

Sunday May 29, 2016 #

steady run 3:00:00 [3]

Lochnagar with Dutch guys, 5 now as one injured calf on first day and flew home ;-(.
Steady race-walk easy run on most climbs and steady pace on flats and down. Fantastic day - warm, sunny and glorious views 360 around.
Spent 15 mins in river at end - legs pretty good after that - not that they'd been hammered during the run.

steady run warm up/down 14:00 [3]

Over to DAP and back up Deeside Way after run.

Saturday May 28, 2016 #

Note

Rest day. Had planned to do something but took E to a roller ski race in Huntly - and discovered that it was all day not just an hour or two.
over 7 hours there for him to do 2 races with a grand total of 4 minutes skiing. I'll never complain about orienteering taking the whole day again!
The organisers were very keen but time keeping was not their strong point...
Lovely sunny day so pleasant enough sitting round watching others exercise for the first 3 hours at least!

Friday May 27, 2016 #

steady run 2:03:00 [3]

Guiding for Running the Highlands, 6 Dutch guys (2 I know for RaS a few years back).
Birse big track, Carn Ferg, Fungle-Guard, down towards Tower o"Ess and back over Jamies Road, then bottom track past Queens Loch and not road for last 2 miles. All pleasant talking pace apart from Jamies Road where I chased down the front runner (and just caught him before the top!). One calf tweak near the end (guy had hurt it a week ago so not too surprised). Hope its OK for him to run the rest of the weekend.

steady run warm up/down 14:00 [3]

easy over to DAP to meet group and back up Deeside Way on return.

Thursday May 26, 2016 #

Note

4 hours surveying, another nice day but still a bit cloudy.

orienteering 18:00 [3]

Collecting controls from after-school club.

Wednesday May 25, 2016 #

Note

5 hours surveying, another decent day but chilly wind and not much sun.

Tuesday May 24, 2016 #

Note

4.5 hours surveying. Steep hill but lovely forest.

steady run 52:00 [3]

Deeside Runners, 2 bridges loop with S & E, feeling heavy legged and tired - pilates hang-over?

Monday May 23, 2016 #

steady run 23:00 [3]

Hill of Banchory, lovely warm day, legs feeling good.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Sunday May 22, 2016 #

Note

Rest day - helping with Maroc junior teams at Scottish Relays, 7 teams, 21 runners, for 17 it was their first relay... a few nerves.
Got 6 in top 9 of course :-)

Saturday May 21, 2016 #

Note

Rest day, helping at SOC at Balmoral. Great day and superb event.

Friday May 20, 2016 #

Note

Rest day, travelling form Kyle to home approx 0900 till 1500. Legs weary carrying bags up Deeside way to home.
Managed to cut grass later on - that's enough exercise for the day!

Thursday May 19, 2016 #

steady run 4:00:00 [3]

RaS Morvich to Skye. Wet day - showers fro the start but tail wind and mild temperature so not too much of a problem. Managed to get everyone safely through the day and all across the bridge.
Nice to have done another RaS, mixed weather and mixed abilities (speed, terrain etc), but a great bunch of people.

Wednesday May 18, 2016 #

steady run 4:30:00 [3]

RaS, Glen Affric to Morvich. Started in steady drizzle but it cleared after 30-40 mins and then mostly dry for rest of run. Cloud on hilltops most of day, just occasional tantalising glimpses... Good to get all group through, all loved it (varying degrees of love for the long rough descent!).
Legs feeling good and aches diminishing from day 1 - need to do this more often ;-)

Tuesday May 17, 2016 #

steady run 1:40:00 [3]

Tomich to Glen Affric car park. Slight head wind but rain held off till after lunch. Track along Loch Bein a Mheadhoin has been upgraded for heavy vehicles but still pleasant enough to run on.

Monday May 16, 2016 #

steady run 3:40:00 [3]

RaS day 2, Drmnadroch to Tomich. Another great running day, clouds on Affric his so views not perfect but pleasant. Group good pace on average. No serious injuries. River dip after to see off tired legs - worked its usual wonder!

Sunday May 15, 2016 #

steady run 4:00:00 [3]

Run across Scotland Day 1 Inverness to Drumnadrochit. Pleasant day, a wee bit of drizzle but decent temp for running. No problems with group.

Saturday May 14, 2016 #

Note

Rest day. Teaching OCAD for 4 hours, tiring!

Friday May 13, 2016 #

Note

Rest day - need to feel good for Sunday.

Thursday May 12, 2016 #

Note

5 hours surveying. Tired legs at start, more tired at end! Another scorch day - unbroken sun and less wind. Feeling a bit frazzled now.
No trace of buttock problem... touch wood it might be gone.

orienteering 15:00 [2]

collecting a few controls at Bellwood. Tired, body refusing on uphills.

Wednesday May 11, 2016 #

orienteering 50:00 [3]

Creag Choinnich - hanging and collecting controls for school festival (plus carrying lad with sprained ankle... heavy for a primary age kid).
Lovely hot day again.

orienteering race 23:00 [3]

Forest Sprint at Balmedie (so no trees). Zig-zag course across tiny area. Lots of fun and some steep climbs. Satisfied with tech performance but struggling with running at times. 2-25 down on JC - but he had a great run!
Cooler on the coast - only about 14C and stiff cool northerly breeze.

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Decent warm-up.
Buttock been fine all day running, just a couple of minor zings when standing and turning or twisting. Ache is going away slowly.

Tuesday May 10, 2016 #

Note

6 hours surveying, hot and windy. Wonderful views and great area, should be fun.

Note

Too tired to do Deeside runners and also a few minor zings in my right buttock, it also felt achey esp on uphills - hope it eases off.

Monday May 9, 2016 #

steady run 15:00 [3]

Wee run round Hill of Banchory, sunny, hot, glorious :-)

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Note

half hour chopping logs. Right buttock giving occasional zings of nervy pain. Stopped.
Carried on giving me gyp all evening then couldn't sleep for a few hours due to major ache, nothing helped except walking round. Eventually it eased off and I got some sleep.
Not sure if brought on by pilates, chopping or sleeping in tent on Sat night...

Sunday May 8, 2016 #

orienteering race 57:00 [5]

SOL at Glen Affric. Short brown course. Felt decent warming up so optimistic things were OK. Started well - spiked first 5 controls, knowing where they would be as I approached them. Pushed as hard as possible (still had to walk plenty of hills) and kept focus well till end. 1st by 6 mins over Ben S. Best technical race for a while, really pleased - the terrain felt a bit "Halden-ish" and I was happy that I knew how hard to push.

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

The advantage of a 2km uphill route to the start!

Saturday May 7, 2016 #

roller skiing 20:00 [2]

An offer of a try out on roller skis while Ewan was coached was too tempting. A bit worried as no gloves or knee pads, but managed to stay on my feet the whole time.

steady run 30:00 [3]

With S, pleasant run at Plodda - down the big-tree path, along to ruin of big house, back then up steep path to Plodda falls. Felt better than expected and legs turning over smoothly.

Friday May 6, 2016 #

Note

2.5 hours sawing, splitting and borrowing logs. Hot day - sweating buckets.

Thursday May 5, 2016 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Moving and rehanging a few controls for Academy festival. Legs feeling awful.

orienteering 15:00 [3]

Collecting controls. Legs worse on hills.

orienteering 10:00 [2]

Collecting a few controls from after-school club. Flat area so managing to shuffle along OK, but legs not happy.

Note

2 hours walking round Aboyne, "knocking up" the voters.

Wednesday May 4, 2016 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Hanging controls, absolutely grovelling on hills - legs feeling spent. OK on level ground and also downhill.

orienteering race 25:00 [5]

Forest Sprint at Tillyfourie. New area for me. Course stuck mostly in pine forest areas - pretty decent running but big hill slope.
Struggling on uphills like morning. Mostly clean - one error on small knoll on hillside - ended up too high. Also lost a few seconds on last control - solid green was gorse and I tried to avoid it rather than getting stuck into it early!

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Feeling pretty awful on warm-up and then slow gentle jog back downhill to car park.

Tuesday May 3, 2016 #

Intervals 12:00 [5]

Glen Tanar, Deeside Runners. 2 bridges loop, 6x2+1. Struggling - breathing a bit ragged early on and legs never really got moving - last few days catching up?
Still, a glorious evening and good company so overall a pleasant session. Track is still a real mess in places from the floods.

steady run warm up/down 50:00 [3]

Monday May 2, 2016 #

cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Cycling in Glen Tanar with S and E. Braeloine, intervals start, up hill to left then out to fire dam, left up lonnnnnnng hill and down diagonal from Osprey view point.
Met the rogue Caper early on - he put on a superb display of strutting and popping noises with tail up and wings spread. Met 2 walkers just b before who had obviously been attacked and were a bit shaken by it.
Legs very tired, didn't even attempt steepest hills.

Note

2 hours log splitting and chainsawing. Arms completely wasted by end.

cycling 15:00 [2]

Cycling to and from village hall AGM. Lovely evening, a bit chilly on way back up hill.

Sunday May 1, 2016 #

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Hanging controls at Knockburn. Breezy and nippy.

orienteering 15:00 [3]

Collecting controls.

steady run 50:00 [3]

Hilly lap of Dess Woods with S. 3 big climbs, feeling tired legs but going OK.

Note

Couple of hours of log splitting (about 60 logs each into 7-8 pieces). Arms and back muscles tired by end. Got about 2/3rd - 3/4ers of the logs chopped now. Should be enough still lying around to fill the log store for next winter.
