orienteering race 1:10:00 [5]

British Championships M50L 1st. Didn't see that result coming! Driving to Berwick on Friday evening I wasn't really sure why I was going, I was tired, I had been surveying a tough area for 3 days and hadn't had enough sleep.
Long jog to star twas good - it meant I had a proper warm-up (for once, these days!), race plan was to be steady and think "strong". Was 2nd to first control, so must have been running quickly enough! Didn't feel great at any point of race, just kept plugging away. Lost approx 30 secs at 5 - thought control was on cliff, it was on the boulder above it. Also another 20 secs or so on 15 - ran further along forest road than planned and back up track - but forest was so tough round here it probably wasn't too bad a move!
Map was OK - a couple of strange bits in second half - one block of green seemed wrong shape/orientation and some contours looked a bit vague and smooth.
Really chuffed to win - the last couple of years I haven't been anywhere near running fast enough.

steady run warm up/down 35:00 [3]

Easy run to start with Sarah and Andy L, feeling pretty sluggish. Also managed a very short jog afterwards...... unusual!

Friday May 30, 2014 #

6 hours survey, hot and sunny all day - glorious!

Thursday May 29, 2014 #

Note

Surveying 8 hours. Slightly less tired.

orienteering 1:20:00 [3]

Checking controls at Glen Feardar - wonderful clear day - Lochnagar glowering over the whole area.
Tough climb up to west ridge - legs still not working at all on hills.
Out for 1-50 total.

Monday May 26, 2014 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session but thighs very tired from last week and weekend.

Note

1hour 40 walking round Glen Feardar with Peter C checking controls, taping etc. Steady rain for a while.

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

Checking control sites in Glen Feardar, didn't manage to get round all - too tired especially on hills.

steady run 20:00 [3]

After schools Adventure Running Club - took group to water fall and back over high track. Feeling pretty awful, glad of lots of stops.

orienteering race 35:00 [5]

Scottish Relays, Newtyle, 1st leg 11+ team. Good race - held o-ing together apart from 1 5 sec wobble. Managed to get ahead of Callum (when he did butterfly loop wrong and had to go back, then Ross missed 2nd last and I managed to sneak past and hold on to the hand-over line. Pleased with performance after yesterdays collapse. Team finished 3rd senior handicap - but beaten by Gramp - the shame! ;-) . Now for some recovery before next weekend.... except I've got some surveying to do......

orienteering race 1:03:00 [5]

Scottish Champs, Dalnamein, M50. 6th, 5 mins down on Clive H. Satisfied, started feeling drained after this week's running and managed to hold things together to half way, then firstly physically struggled on the second climb and then started to lose focus as well. Thought of jacking, but it was pleasant running and I felt it would be a shame to give up. Hope I can get some recovery before tomorrow for the relays....

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

A bit of run to the start and some strides etc once there, not feeling good.....

Friday May 23, 2014 #

Note

Decided against Forest Sprint - legs a wee bit tired....

steady run 15:00 [2]

Jog round Fordell Firs with Jess T doing an easy technical exercise.

Friday May 16, 2014 #

Note

5 hours in garden - digging and cutting grass then raking piles of cuttings... feeling tired.

orienteering race 21:00 [4]

Forest Sprint, Sluie. Feeling very lethargic and tired - legs, arms, shoulders - pretty much all over! Started steadily and decided to try to feel "strong" rather than worrying about "fast". Plodded round and even felt I was moving fairly fast near end (on the downhill bits!).

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

A bit of warm-up - didn't help a lot but must have done something!

pace run 57:00 [4]

Glen Tanar, long loop, me running Sarah biking - but mistake, total mismatch... hard work all the way. Still, all in all a good session and great for forcing me to try to run relaxed but quickly.
Right bum/hip a bit sore and twingy at times but nothing too bad.
Hot - topless for most of way and dripping sweat.
Spotted a slow-worm on track near start - picked it up - fantastic smooth muscly skin, tail had obviously dropped off previously - slightly stumpy growth - probably been picked up before by some large clumsy person ;-) - still if its going to lie on the main path next to the visitor centre it can expect to be picked up occasionally. Deposited it safely in the grass beside the track.

Note

2 hours digging potato plot, hard work on back and arms/shoulders- before run, so not best preparation.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Wednesday May 14, 2014 #

Note

Rest day - but 4 hours in garden digging potato bed and extending fence.

Tuesday May 13, 2014 #

Intervals intervals 18:00 [5]

Deeside Runners, Glen Tanar. 6x2+1 on flat and 6x1+1 on hill. Going strongly, good battle with JennyR on several of them and even managed to get Steph on a couple of hills.... Pleased to still be battling at end of session, maybe life left in me yet! legs very achy afterwards, digging the new potato plot tomorrow will be interesting..........

steady run warm up/down 50:00 [3]

Usual 2 bridges circuit with hill at end. Back via millpond and high track.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Very necessary.

Monday May 12, 2014 #

steady run 20:00 [3]

Hill of Banchory, very pleasant morning, mild and bright.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Tough, lots of glute and ab work.

steady run 20:00 [3]

After-school Adventure Running club, warm-up, a few hill sprints and then round a short easy O course. Kids found a small frog and a tiny toad - all happy!

Sunday May 11, 2014 #

Note

Rest day.

Saturday May 10, 2014 #

steady run 1:15:00 [3]

With MN, Cairngorm carpark to Corrie an Sneachda, up by Fiacall ridge (scrambling in a couple of places, then left along corrie lip nad down Fiacall of Corrie Cas. Great run and stayed dry despite bits of cloud. Toiling on uphills and stressed on scramble! Very pleasant end to day of Level 2 course at Glenmore Lodge.

Friday May 9, 2014 #

steady run 1:15:00 [3]

Potties to Shooting Greens on Deeside Way, to east along rocky, rooty gnarly path, then down big tracks to Deeside Way (now signposted) back via low track out of Slewdrum and Deeside Way. Not feeling very bright in the legs, but going Ok and still going fine at end.

Thursday May 8, 2014 #

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Hanging and collecting controls for schools festival at Dess. Legs tired but nothing actively hurting.

Wednesday May 7, 2014 #

Intervals 16:00 [5]

Deeside Way west of Dinnet, pyramid session 1,2,3,4,3,2,1 with 1 minute recovery between all (for ease of memory!)
Felt tough all the way through, must do some good!
Lucked out with weather - peeing down rain at home, very heavy shower just west of Aboyne but session in the dry and even sunny and warm by end.
Legs feeling effect two hours later, maybe means quicker recovery???

steady run warm up/down 34:00 [3]

Tuesday May 6, 2014 #

Note

Surveying 5 hours, lots of tough bog..... buttocks tired and achy - pilates yesterday to blame. Had already planned to do intervals tomorrow - definite now!

Monday May 5, 2014 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Bands and small balls - expected to feel tired after yesterday but was fine.

Sunday May 4, 2014 #

steady run 1:03:00 [3]

Tornaveen over hills to Devils Den and through woods and fields to Dess. Felt terrible from start - legs tired and feeling empty of energy. Not sure what casued it - not enough food yesterday?, bike ride on top of hard week? warm humid day? timew spent gardening the past few days, all of these together adding up to overload?
Anyway I got home - a bit wobbly but alive to be greeted by Ewan describing my run as "Epic Fail"..... so understanding.

Saturday May 3, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [2]

Easy ride up Glen Tanar to 2 bridges and back. Pleasant afternoon ride - good for legs to get turned over after the past couple of days.

Friday May 2, 2014 #

orienteering 1:10:00 [4]

Hanging kites at Glen Feardar for SEDS training. What a glorious place Glen Feardar is! Got to within 10m of 4 Roe Deer - seemed totally oblivious to me as I ran towards them, then raised their heads, looked at me, at each other and then decided to panic - all running off in different directions. Saw (and smelt) 2 huge Red Deer hinds in the plantation - trotting away up the hill with great ease and elegance. I guess living in the woods gives them great shelter during winter and so is helping increase their size towards what it once was before the forests were cleared.
Lovely run out - shame my legs were not working on anything remotely uphill- still, it shows I worked hard last night! Dry feet after 70 minutes of orienteering - how many top class areas can you say that about in May?
Cottage near entrance to parking field being done up very nicely - windows in and new sun lounge at front. It'll be a lovely place - wonder if its a holiday cottage?

orienteering race 17:00 [5]

Forest Sprint, Bogendreip, 2.7km 17-24. 2nd to Sasha (14-40...). Legs felt better at start than in morning but never really flying. One error - couldn't see control 7 due to it being in white trees rather than as map showed - semi-open (dodgy bit of map!). Had to slow at bottom of steep descent 6-7 when back muscles tightened up a bit. Please to keep racing and pushing to end.
Good course from Ewan McMillan - plenty of cut off options but also relatively simple round options as well.

steady run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Jog to start.

Thursday May 1, 2014 #

pace run race 18:00 [5]

Cambus Canters - first time this year. 17-51 (a lot better than last year). Actually got into the mix at the end and had some people to chase and overtake. Only 2 came past me - Dan and Harry, both absolutely flying!
Pleased with run - particularly as I've done almost no speed-work this spring (I think 3 interval sessions!).
A good base to work on for the summer - need to get fit for the O in Italy & Croatia.

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Good warm-up, 15 mins with Peter, then 5 mins each with Joe W and Miles. No warm-down as had to rush back to Aboyne for meeting at scout hut.
