Echt road over Hill of Fare, via TV mast and high tracks, cross country to top of road over Learney Hill and back via roads and tracks form there. Tired after least few days and struggling by Learney raod (ca 1-36), OK down hill to back of Torphins and then hard time getting up hill past Pitmurchie House entrance. Pretty knacked by end.

Railway line intervals from Aboyne to Dess. 12x2+1. Going OK, hanging on by fingernails on last 2!

Warm-up from centre of Aboyne to west end and from end of intervals back to home - waded Dess Burn (now Iain has removed log-jam bridge its not so easy).

Rest day - legs pretty wrecked after yesterday. Need to plan more, longer, harder hill runs if I'm to do better next year!

Hill Race race 3:46:00 [5]

Great Wilderness Challenge 25 miles Started steadily and got slower. First felt aches at 70 minutes - not good! Slow up 2nd climb thenslower into driving rain across top. Causeway in ca 2-11. Reached last moorland checkpoint in 2-50....and still many miles to go. Shovelled in more and more food & drink at later controls, but still slowing. Actually finished reasonably briskly, but time was over 58
minutes slower than best.......... I need to do some proper long training sessions and prob more races & hard intervals if I'm to enjoy this race again! 2 hours after race and legs are not too bad - prob didn't run fast enough to really hurt the muscles. Ohh to be 15 years younger again! Winner was Matt Sullivan in 2-54, a truly impressive time given the strength of the head wind for most of the race.

Checking controls in Glen Dye - started stiffly from last night's hills and then got slower, eventually ran out of food - tried blaeberries but they don't have much energy in them! Eventually finished and grovelled home to a late lunch!

12x1+1 in Glen Tanar with Deeside Runners. Feeling pretty slow in the leg speed, but seemed to handle the uphill part reasonably well.

Through Dess Woods, cow-shit alley and onto fields to NE, briefly into plantation (but too much bracken and nettles in rides) and back. feeling fairly lethargic, but going reasonably well at end.

Run along river Lesse - tarmac road and pretty boring, added in some intervals on return to feel I had done something positive.

12 x 30s+30s on grassy field. sluggish at start but got going OK, should have done more, but couldn't face them....!

Col de Schlucht to north - lovely run - stared in shitsville Col de Schlucht - tacky hotels, luge runs, cafes, carparks etc, in 2 minutes this was forgotten in lovely beech/pine forests, stony track. Superb views over great corries and ranks of hills towards NW and NW. Lots of walkers - all friendly and cheery.

Run from La Bresse to high point to NE - nice run, big climb to start with then undulating ridge - most good paths or forest roads.

Canoeing ca 1 hour paddling, shoulders a bit achey after.

WMOC Long final. Started dreadfully - lost a minute at first control - straight over a path without seeing it. Steadied down after this and OK till 11, when I was trying to refold map, check codes ahead and swung 90 degrees off line, had to stop to relocate and cut back to control - ca 30-40 secs. Amazed to have leading time at finish, and even more amazed to finish 5th - but pissed off as a silver or bronze medal was easily there for the taking. Must remember that most guys over-cook the final and stuff up big time! Still not feeling like I was running quickly - altitude? age? lack of decent training recently?

WMOC Long Qual 2 - running better today, but 2 big errors (ca 90-120 secs each). finished 6th, 3 mins down. Could have won! Food OK, not an issue after a lot of sports drink (thanks CompassPoint) and a heavy evening meal!!

Good run for first time for a while! Started as fast as possible and ran straight on everything, fine till 2/3rds way round then started to run out of energy - I don't think I've eaten enough over past few days. Pleased to be 3rd, but 4 mins down.......

WMOC model event - pissing rain and dark skies = could hardly read map in forest! Feeling in pretty poor shape, need to focus on running tomorrow to get a decent placing.

WMOC sprint final - Neuchatel. Again a very simple course, a couple of tiny hesitations and possible route choice? - but happy with run - just not quick enough running, 17th - equal lowest WMOC place ever!

Not as pleasant warm-up area as previous day, but OK.
