orienteering race 24:00 [5]

JOK chasing sprint, prologue, arrived very tight for time and had no time for proper warm-up, just jogged up to start. Reasonable run - missed one path through gorse and a few hesitations, but pleased with 7th (though over 4 mins down).

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

jog (but very steep!) to start, no warm-down and just short jog to start of final.

orienteering race 21:00 [5]

JOK chasing sprint final. Started 7th, finished 6th (Ed Catmur passed me, I caught Simon Gardner and Spongey was disqualified). 7th fastest time - good start, but wobbled on a couple of legs (running too hard) and hanging on at end to stay ahead of Simon. Good fun, but my legs hurt..... Possibly something to do with lack of fast races recently but also the wine on 2 previous nights.

orienteering race 51:00 [5]

Edinburgh street race. Steady start and enjoyed it - might have missed one or two best route choices, but few wobbles until near end when I caught Brad and Walter and we all proceeded to rush things!
Fairly please with result and position. Really enjoyed race - I seem to be enjoying O this year :-)

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Jogging around before start and playing tag with Ewan - good warm-up!

steady run 45:00 [3]

With Sarah along river bank and back via new mansion house (looking like it has been there a couple of hundred years already). A bit tired. Fresh snow underfoot and falling as we ran.

orienteering race 42:00 [5]

Deeside Night Cup Glen Dye, course a bit simple in places (large features and line to follow) but very pleasant. Good run - into O very quickly and a couple of wobbles off line was the worst misses, all controls found cleanly.

Intervals 20:00 [5]

10x2+1 at Glen Tanar with Sarah, did first half of standard loop then back over 2 bridges. A bit icy underfoot in places - interesting to feel difference in stride length and tenseness of abdominals as I left firm ground for snow/icy....

steady run warm up/down 38:00 [3]

Glen Tanar normal route to start and back along road. Lots of new ditches and erosion from snow melt/rain of 2 weeks ago!

Warm-up for Pilates at Banchory

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session (and room not quite as cold as 2 weeks ago) - felt strong, and only 3 people so lots of hands-on from Emma - good for helping with small improvements.

orienteering 1:02:00 [5]

Orienteering district event Crathes. Decent course and good run apart from going 17-19, but at least I realised and went back to 18 - cost me ca 4 mins, but I still managed to beat Marnoch.

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Helping Ewan round white course - he ran every leg with no encouragement needed! Also a few minutes jog to start after Sarah came back - just in time for least start time...

Note

Sawing and chopping wood - 1.5 hours

steady run 1:33:00 [4]

Aboyne up Fungle, to Carn Ferg and back. from high part of Fungle to top of Carn Ferg was walking - deep snow with crust.... Back down on better route - firmer snow and heather, then bad bit at high point of trees above Birsemore Hill - looked lovely - like Norway at the plateau level, but we weren't on skis!
Very pleasant run, but still feeling a bit drained from survey.

jog to and from intervals

Monday Jan 18, 2010 #

Note

Surveying 7 hours. Flat but bambley and lots of rhodedendrons.

Note

At Maroc junior training so no running, then train to Newark for surveying.

steady run 1:45:00 [4]

With Dave, David, Matt & Alan from Corsedarder stone wwest through woods to hill to , then over to seagull hill and back via north slopes and fields. Working hard at start - often breaking trail and feeling good. Struggling by end, having to push hard to keep with others.
Snow was much deeper than Friday - 6-8 inches of wet heavy snow or slush on lots and parts higher up had up to knee deep heavy soft snow. If frost comes the hills would be great for ski touring.

Friday Jan 15, 2010 #

steady run 1:20:00 [4]

With Sarah, Shooting Greens carpark down to river bank path, downstream until houses then returning along higher path. Much ice and packed snow on tracks and, on undisturbed tracks and higher altitude ones, deep heavy snow. Tough going, but river was veery scenic and enjoyed run more than expected.

Thursday Jan 14, 2010 #

Note

rest day (though 30 mins of slush/ice digging on track) as feeling tired and want to do a decent run tomorrow.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Jan 13, 2010 #

Note

90 mins of wet snow and ice digging and that cleared a small portion of about 100m of our 800m track..... and my shoulders and arms are feeling like soggy spaghetti.

orienteering 48:00 [5]

DNC Balmedie - cool, breezy night with some drizzle. Great course - shame about the moving map in the Sahara! Enjoyed the O more than any for a long time - feeling OK running and kept my cool, reading map ahead and moving confidently through most controls.

steady run 40:00 [3]

Dess Wood loop, some well trodden parts - mostly on forest paths, but fields and track at top were HEAVY - nearly knee deep wet snow - lovely! thought I was going well, but 6-8 mins slower than a clear run!

steady run 13:00 [3]

Easy run round Hill of Banchory before pilates (new location).

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Banchory Dance Studio - F***ing cold in the building! Mirrors on wall, so good for checking positions - and also bad for seeing how wobbly/awkward things look!

x-c skiing 25:00 [3]

1 lap of new route - but temperature above freezing and wax not good! Real Scottish skiing - snow dripping off trees and sticking on downhills and sliding back on uphills!

stretching 15:00 [2]

Sunday Jan 10, 2010 #

orienteering 10:00 [3]

Shadowing at club training - not too much snow in Tilquillie.

x-c skiing 48:00 [3]

2 laps of new track - getting faster with polishing and clearing of steeper slopes. Also messing around with Ewan.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Saturday Jan 9, 2010 #

x-c skiing 1:00:00 [4]

XC skiing at Glen Tanar from Braeloine, 20 mins towing Ewan on a sledge and a 40 min loop up the glen and back. Snow really good on tracks - ploughed and well packed so good glide.

x-c skiing 15:00 [3]

Messing around with Ewan - towing sledge up hill and following him down

Friday Jan 8, 2010 #

x-c skiing 25:00 [4]

Cambus O'May - a lap of the main tracks - good conditions- new snow since last visit and -7C which was perfect for the wax. Lovely skiing, though chilly on downhill whizzes!

x-c skiing 41:00 [4]

2 laps of dungheap loop + extra loope below Walled Garden and towards waterfall (sarah cut new track). 21 and 20 mins. Going well, good conditions - head torch as it was sunset when I set off!

steady run 54:00 [4]

Collecting night-O markers - ran actual course and did just under 54 mins - and that was knowing the control sites (only had to hunt for 2!) and in daylight. Respect to Oleg for his 46.

steady run 6:00 [3]

Collecting reflectors from fence at bottom of ride below house - easy run down, wallow back. Still - last night's participants who created a nice trench in the snow have given us an escape route to the main road!

Wednesday Jan 6, 2010 #

steady run 1:10:00 [4]

Hanging markers for night-O - snow quite deep in places. Open areas were worst - up to my hips in some places and over my knees for a lot. Forest is much better - esp under spruce trees - one occasion to head for the thick forest!
Managed to grind left shin down something in the snow - didn't hurt until half an hour later when it thawed out!

stretching 15:00 [2]

Tuesday Jan 5, 2010 #

Note

School shut on first day of term - what a joke - a few inches of snow and the whole of Aberdeenshire schools shut - pathetic. So no chance of getting night-O markers out, have to do it tomorrow.

Monday Jan 4, 2010 #

x-c skiing 35:00 [4]

lap of Cambus tracks - good tracks, but a bit icy in places where too many walkers ;-). Feeling tired - arms particularly.

Had a potter around with Ewan before start - about 20mins of low level.

Note

30 mins snow shovelling to clear lay-by for DNC parking - hope we don't get too much snow between now and Wednesday evening!

stretching 15:00 [2]

Sunday Jan 3, 2010 #

x-c skiing 1:00:00 [3]

xc-skiing to Bell Wood, Aboyne for Maroc training. A great swoop down the hill to Dess Burn then good going on most of railway line (worst part was next to Aboyne Loch where the snow ploughs had sprayed gritty snow onto the track - felt bad on new skis :-( ) Crossed road to field and this was HEAVY -t knee deep crusty snow - had to walk/wade even on skis!
Lovely morning with sun and some clouds - clear views all round.

Note

30 mins digging snow off access track to avoid car bottoming out on central raised snow bank - hard work with crunchy compacted snow.

Saturday Jan 2, 2010 #

x-c skiing 1:30:00 [3]

A loop through woods and out onto fields - similar to normal Dess wood loop - but took a bit longer. Snow was almost knee deep in fields - hard work to keep moving! Hope the conditions stay cold overnight (now at -7C so looking good) and then it'll be even better tomorrow.
Afternoon - a lap of yesterday's loop and some "downhilling" on the steep track beyond the powerline - even better than yesterday!

stretching 15:00 [2]

Friday Jan 1, 2010 #

x-c skiing 1:40:00 [2]

More snow overnight, so even better conditions out back of house - who needs the Alps when Dess Wood can provide slopes, trails and sledging (Ewan). Made tracks round via the water supply, manure pile, Jan's field and main track - 4 laps during the 2 sessions (last one on skinny skis - fell 3 times - lack of control is very apparent after heavier skis/boots!). Another great day of fun on the skis, long may it continue - and the forecast is just that!
