x-c skiing 1:30:00 [2]

Lots of playing on skis out back of house (the new snow has covered almost everything). Even Ewan was happy to play around for a while in morning and afternoon. Tried out heavier xc skis - really fast downhill and Ok with 0 -7C wax for grip. Good support from boots and much more confident on downhill sections.

steady run 40:00 [3]

Dess loop in snow - getting fairly deep, but still reasonably fluffy. Forest will be in good shape once the snow goes - bracken will be completely flattened.

x-c skiing 15:00 [2]

xc skiing at Glen Gairn with Ewan and Sarah, cold -11C, didn't last long before E complained. Stopped on way back to Ballater to sledge in a field - a bit fast!!!! - even on skis going diagonally down the slope in fresh snow it was scary! ewan bounced off survival-bag sledge on last run and scraped his face, sudden loss of interest....
Had a wee walk to Cambus White bridge - and walked out onto river - completely iced over and felt very thick and solid.

steady run 1:10:00 [3]

Up Benaquillie from Tarland road with Sarah. Crusty snow low down in the shadows (bad on ankles) and softer up to in the sun. Last climb was pretty deep in places (over my knees) and tough on leg muscles. Came off to east and back along tracks to farms and finished up initial descent (still v. crusty snow). Good run and tremendous views all round. Glorious sunshine, but cold in shade. Coldest run so far this winter, long may it continue!

x-c skiing 20:00 [2]

Skiing at Balmoral - with Ewan and Sarah. A lot longer on the snow, but not much effort!

steady run 35:00 [3]

Dess Wood loop - snow and ice, dark with head torch (though ran all of open and some of return through wood by moonlight. back still feeling a bit achy, but nothing bad - don't know what could have set it off - neither skiing nor running are bad.

Saturday Dec 26, 2009 #

Note

Back still tweaking so avoided Banchory fun run - a race on icy streets/paths was probably the last thing I wanted.

Friday Dec 25, 2009 #

Note

Left lower back tweaking now!!! Took day off as ground pretty icy and didn't fancy the risk of jarring my back.

Thursday Dec 24, 2009 #

x-c skiing 40:00 [3]

Skiing with Ewan at Cambus - snow really good on big open tracks, thin under big trees by carpark, then a short bit while he was in car eating! and 20 mins at home along tracks out back - a bit thin here esp under trees!

Wednesday Dec 23, 2009 #

pace run 14:00 [4]

Faster section of run - from A93 along ILPH road and along to river back path.

steady run 40:00 [3]

Across log jam, to railway, along to sawmill and across to ILPH road - pace along here to river bank, then steady back along river (sleeting for a while). Had a look at the huge shooting platform at top of bank by river - at least 30 feet tall- and no rails!
Carried along bank and then cut up old path line to foot of our lane, back up this and then plodded uphill to home. Good run and very enjoyable despite heavy wet snow underfoot and rain/sleet for part of the time.

Tuesday Dec 22, 2009 #

Note

Shovelling salt and grit for 1 hour on drive - back pretty stiff after, so took the wimpish (sensible?) option and took day off.

Monday Dec 21, 2009 #

Note

Back a lot better this morning.

x-c skiing 30:00 [2]

Taking Ewan skiing at Balmoral golf course - decent depth and good smooth surface. Pottered about for a while and he (mostly) enjoyed it.

steady run 1:30:00 [3]

Morven night run. 14 (some splitters went off early) and DG arrived very late - met him at top of upper steep part and retraced steps to summit with him. Very pleasant evening- ca -5C at base but didn't feel any colder at summit. Slight wind at top but still not too cold. Misty on climb, but blown away by wind for descent so all the lights were twinkling in the distance as we descended.

Sunday Dec 20, 2009 #

Note

Back still bad - catching me occasionally. Need to try to get better before tomorrow for Morven.

Saturday Dec 19, 2009 #

orienteering 45:00 [3]

easy run round Dess Wood - planning event. Nice and snowy.

Note

Tweaked back (lower right) while picking up logs from pile - need to be careful as its same as last weekend's tweak.

Friday Dec 18, 2009 #

steady run 1:13:00 [3]

Up Clachnaben with Sarah. Cold and snowy. Pushed on hill from wood to top. Back via south side of Mount Shade and telephone mast track.

pace run 11:00 [4]

Hard push up hill to Clachnaben.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Thursday Dec 17, 2009 #

Note

Survey at Glenmore 5 hours - snow lying and falling occasionally.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 #

steady run 49:00 [3]

Cow shit alley loop, pushed for 5-6 mins in middle and felt tired but OK. Buttock muscles sore this evening - probably from Sunday circuits.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

Intervals hills 16:00 [5]

8x2+2 from activity park gate. Wasn't sure how it would be when I left the house as I felt chilled and tired, but session was good and I got good distance on all. Tempted to do another - but didn't! Pleased with session - there's hope still! I think the circuits were useful - I'll need to keep them up.

steady run warm up/down 36:00 [3]

straight to start and long way back via Dess Road and farm

stretching 15:00 [2]

Monday Dec 14, 2009 #

Note

feeling tired and busy.

Sunday Dec 13, 2009 #

Circuits 55:00 [3]

New gym session - for leg/hip strength/power. Warm up 15 mins on cross trainer and then 40 mins exercises. Will probably be sore tomorrow! Back was a littlke twitchy on some of the hip exercises.
Bella Comerford was in gym when I arrived - giving the treadmill some beating! Looked incredibly fit and seemed very focussed - still going for iron man tri-s

Saturday Dec 12, 2009 #

cycling 50:00 [3]

With Sarah and Ewan (on tag-along) from Invercauld carpark west along northtrack towards Linn of Quoich. Cold and mostly cloudy. Turned back early as Ewan had cold fingers and was whingeing a lot! Legs very tired - toiling on any hill. Reckon Thursday took quite a lot out of me after Tuesday and Wednesday.

Note

2+ hours sawing and chopping logs - niggled my lower right back - nervy pains if I catch it in the wrong position.

Friday Dec 11, 2009 #

steady run 1:50:00 [3]

With Sarah, from Corsedarder monument along ridge to west, dropped down into Feughside (very cold in the shade) along the road and back up through the woods. Nice still clear sunny day with crisp frost in the hollows and on the trees. Calf was fine - I could feel it tugging a few times, but not really painful.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Thursday Dec 10, 2009 #

Note

Surveying at Glenmore - 5 hours in the cold. Calf fine - only time I felt anything was walking up steep hill.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Dec 9, 2009 #

orienteering race 56:00 [4]

DNC Tilquillie, "Norwegian Score" - get all controls in any order. Really tough grotty forest and no chance to avoid the scattered fallen trees - esp the ones covering control sites! Good contender for the Toughest of the Tough Trophy this year.
Also pulled a muscle in my left calf - just below knee. Thought I had hit it on a stick, it didn't seem to affect running (not that the forest allowed much of that!) but has stiffened up after and is aching a bit. Wait and see what its like in the morning.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Calf Ok in most stretches - apart from straight leg calf stretch (bent knee deep calf stretch is completely pain free), so I reckon its a superficial muscle that is tweaked.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2009 #

Intervals 20:00 [5]

Aboyne intervals, Deeside Runners - Robbie, Sam, Alan, Donald, Finlay, Owen. Quick group!
5x4+2, felt terrible on first interval but improved and felt strong all way through set - shame thee speed seems to be disappearing!

steady run warm up/down 50:00 [3]

warm up and long loop after - only Donald came round!

stretching 15:00 [2]

Monday Dec 7, 2009 #

Note

Coaching course all day, then drive home. Too drained to think of running.

Sunday Dec 6, 2009 #

pace run 34:00 [4]

From lodge with Scotia and Mike Rodgers up footpath through woods towards Meall a' Bhuchaille. Not enough time to reach top, feeling sluggish but strong. Great views of Cairngorm massif swathed in snow and wreathed in cloud.
Another full day of coaching course.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Saturday Dec 5, 2009 #

steady run 50:00 [3]

With Scotia at Glenmore, head torches, along towards An Lochan Uaine, up footpath and back above Lodge on forest road, down to Reindeer House and across to Loch Morlich and back on tracks. Seemed fast at start but OK for most of run. Tired from presenting coaching course all day.

stretching 15:00 [2]

No space in room to do side leg stretches so added calf stretches instead.

Friday Dec 4, 2009 #

Note

Surveying at Glenmore - 3 hours, v. cold and snowy.

Thursday Dec 3, 2009 #

Note

rest day - tired from past 2 nights training and a late night after (leading not drinking) a whisky tasting session.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Dec 2, 2009 #

orienteering 41:00 [4]

DNC 2 Dunnottar Woods. Feeling very stiff and achey, no warm-up due to time pressures. No real problems with orienteering (apart from inability to read contours due to pale colour, thin lines and mud on map).

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009 #

steady run 15:00 [3]

Placing and collecting controls at Huntly for schools orienteering.

Intervals intervals 20:00 [5]

Aboyne with Deeside Runners - 10x2+1. Going well, legs definitely recovered from last week's tiredness. Windy and some rain/sleet.

steady run 49:00 [3]

Warm up/down and long return route. Almost out of food by end - world getting slightly fuzzy and wobbly!

stretching 15:00 [2]
