orienteering 55:00 [3]

Collecting controls in Cambus, wet, dusk, cloudy, so not a lot of fast running... :-)
Still, pleasant enough and made sure I took routes through the nicest bits of the forest. One control was, A already collected, B missing, C in wrong place (not sure which yet!)

Surveying 3:00:00 [1]

More map checking, lots of walking, not much drawing!

Intervals 15:00 [4]

Deeside Runners session. Supposed to be 10 mins tempo, 5x1 hills and 1ยง0 mins tempo. However the group decided a 2 minute warm-up was adequate and the til uses for hills was different to one thought, aso turned up late there!
Classic DR shambles :-)
Anyway, not going great and wheezing quite a bit so not too much missed!

steady run warm up/down 32:00 [3]

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Felt good

Surveying 1:00:00 [1]

Checking bits of Banchory map - lots of amendments!

Sunday Sep 27, 2020 #

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Various bits of jogging and some faster stuff before start.

orienteering race 58:00 [5]

Cambus local event, stacked field... Clean start and going well to 5, then paralleled and lost 30-40 secs. To 6 ran too far along the track but spotted it just in time, prob another 30 secs. OK till 15 when didn't spot the patch of fight (gorse) on line and maybe added a bit extra distance to line by crossing power line too early.
Fairly pleased with race, mostly in control and reading ahead. Compass was still a bit sloppy - need to tighten up on this before DNC starts!
Legs felt tired from start and definitely dropped pace in middle section, not sure if just self-preservation or tougher going.
Much nicer forest than Wednesday (Shooting Greens).

cycling 1:45:00 [3]

Started with E at Aboyne - Ballater then peeled off and back via Burn O Vat - Tarland. Legs struggling today and nasty headwind for much of return.

Note

4 hours various gardening tasks, some heavier than others.

orienteering 46:00 [3]

Collecting tapes from last Wednesday training session. Enjoyed it much more - legs were trashed that evening from Glen Tanar session. Moving fairly well in terrain and even running up some of the hills :-)
Met JW and had a wee chat.

steady run 31:00 [3]

Aboyne to home after dropping car at garage. Lovely bright chilly autumn morning :-)

Note

Pleasant walk back to Aboyne mid afternoon to pick up car - 45 mins.

Wednesday Sep 23, 2020 #

orienteering 55:00 [4]

Shooting Greens training. Bit of a bracken fest in parts, some good route choice legs (shame no timing) then nice control pick, shame bracken is not yet down...
Twatted right knee of a rock and left shin graunched over a tree stump so a little sore afterwards :-)

steady run tempo 8:00 [3]

to start/from finish

steady run 45:00 [3]

Deeside Runners - chose flat route/group. Felt really dizzy at turn point and bit paced out after that - maybe food bonk?

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Sunday Sep 20, 2020 #

steady run 3:20:00 [3]

With E (well behind him for most of the run tbh) Glenshee, Glas Maol, Tolmount (E added Tom Buidhe), Fafernie, Carn a Claise, Broad Cairn, Glen Muick. Lots of other walkers out and about and Loch Muick track was busy... Got to car park earlier than expected so wandered along road a while waiting for S to pick us up.
Felt reasonable for much of the run, kept to my own pace and avoided trying to stay with E. Tough along Loch Muick at the end but track in good shape which made it more pleasant.
Last did this route in about 1988 or so - went over Lochnagar that time plus the Sagairts. Plus skied much of it in 2000/2001 on a glorious winter day.

cycling 20:00 [2]

Down to Kinker for a bramble picking session (4 litres), then most way back to home, but unusual tyre burst - rim of front wheel failed... luckily when going slowly up a hill. Only a short distance to wheel bike home. new wheels next week I think :-)

Note

Blaeberry picking while E ran up Clachnaben 8L !

Friday Sep 18, 2020 #

steady run 1:48:00 [3]

Davan - Culblean hill- Cambus.
Took it steady - a glorious day, sunny and hot. Legs feeling tired so just plodded up the hill with some stops to take in the view :-)
Breathing seemed much more relaxed today.

Thursday Sep 17, 2020 #

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

BCT car park, up big hill to Carn Ferg, a 5 minute break to enjoy the views - 360 degrees, then down to the Gamies track and back. A wonderful afternoon - low sun, warm air a breeze and superb views - can't be many places better than Deeside on a sunny September day :-)
On the down side my breathing was terrible - really struggled the whole way up the hill. Legs not 100% either - still struggling a bit from Tuesday.

Wednesday Sep 16, 2020 #

orienteering 25:00 [4]

Half of coaching course at Dess Woods - struggling with tired legs from last night's session.

Tuesday Sep 15, 2020 #

Intervals 16:00 [5]

Deeside Runners 2x4mins then 8x1 up through the forest. V steep and rough - road shoes not the best!
Dark for return along Firmouth track.

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

Close to running out of energy by end...

Monday Sep 14, 2020 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

A real-life class!! A matwork session and felt fairly easy. Nice to be back in the hall.

Surveying 1:30:00 [1]

Surveying school in Aberdeen. Pleasant late afternoon - and some luxuriant brambles so ate plenty :-)

Sunday Sep 13, 2020 #

orienteering 45:00 [4]

Shadowing round a Long-leg course. Tough heather but lovely forest (Loch Vaa). Felt in control of nav and able to provide some advice now and again :-)

orienteering race 25:00 [5]

Relay (well first leg practice). Give the girls a 1 mi n head start (and 4 mins ahead of lads), then set off. Really enjoyed the racing, trying to pick good running lines and cut corners here and there. Managed to miss the egg/flour 18s :-) by dint of a rad route choice... Lucky!
Pretty stuffed by end but great to have a blast.
Top quality weekend with all planning by the 18s (and control hanging, collecting and most of the coaching!!!).

Saturday Sep 12, 2020 #

Note

Helping at ScotJOS training in Anagach, 18s planned and hung all courses then led the coaching. Had a very pleasant day wandering between groups (at a distance!) checking on how things were going (a great day of training).

cycling 20:00 [2]

Home from dropping car for service. Legs still feeling heavy.

steady run 28:00 [3]

To Aboyne to pick up car from garage.

Thursday Sep 10, 2020 #

cycling 1:28:00 [2]

home - Cross roads summit - Queens View - Tarland -Aboyne - home. Had thought of a Potties loop but legs said NO.
Weary legs, felt good in some places but tired in other sections.
Nice weather - cool and only a light breeze.

Wednesday Sep 9, 2020 #

Swimming 7:00 [2]

A 7-30 dip in Loch Insch with HQ and 2 others. A bit parky in just a cossie but gloves and boots helped (thanks H!). Almost bottled it but once in a moving it wasn't as bad as I had feared.

Surveying 6:00:00 [1]

Another day in the forest and felled areas. Some lovely woodland in places. Tired by end.

Tuesday Sep 8, 2020 #

Surveying 6:30:00 [1]

Surveying - pleasant day until a bit drizzle late on. Some nice pine plantation but also a lot of felled. Legs tired by half way through... Still got Sunday in them.

Monday Sep 7, 2020 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Mat-work class, but abs aching already...

cycling 17:00 [2]

To Kinker shop and back. Legs felt good.

Sunday Sep 6, 2020 #

steady run 3:07:00 [3]

home - Stot Hill - Broom Hill - Craiglich - Mortlich - Little Hill - home.Started steadily and slow early on with a lot of rough grass and forest in first section. Then hit forest roads towards Craiglich and sped up (a little!). Descent form Craiglich was a bit rough - deep heather over rocks, but only short. After that just a question of keeping moving. Bracken off Mortlich was a bit of a swim for a couple of '00 metres!
Pleased to have done the loop.

Saturday Sep 5, 2020 #

steady run 1:20:00 [3]

Home - riverbank - Bellwood - old road - DW - home. Took steady as legs feeling bit tired form let 2 days surveying. Gradually got into it and enjoying it for the last 30 mins or so.

Friday Sep 4, 2020 #

Surveying 6:00:00 [1]

A better day - only one very light shower with sun and a stiff breeze for rest of the day, so most things nice and dry :-) Lots of hills and still plenty of felled stuff, but some lovely patches of runnable forest as well.
Had planned to run once home but legs (and head) said no - plus tea was ready soon after I got back :-)

Thursday Sep 3, 2020 #

Surveying 5:00:00 [1]

Tough day, showers, heavy undergrowth and lots of felled areas.

Wednesday Sep 2, 2020 #

Pilates 1:10:00 [1]

Extra session - due to my incompetence in checking how many weeks i had already booked :-)
Interesting to try a second session in a week. Felt good and strong, maybe continue with one Zoom class and a real class once they start again.

Tuesday Sep 1, 2020 #

Intervals 11:00 [5]

Deeside Runners (the return...) Glen Tanar. 2 bridges loop with 1+1 out to far end. 9 x 1 then 2-24 bridge to bridge. Sesion went pretty well considering I'd done hills yesterday. Only really struggled on last interval and it was 2-24, so legs tied up after about 90 secs of 1 minute pace...
Legs feeling pretty strong, need to up cadence a bit for more speed, but I suspect it is heart and lungs that are the limiting factor now.

steady run warm up/down 45:00 [3]
