orienteering 30:00 [3]

Shadowing (OK blindly trying to follow a group on trains exercise) and then doing a lovely line course back to car parking - Achtemarack, a real gem of an area.

Saturday Jun 29, 2019 #

steady run 1:10:00 [3]

Warm up to start of training session then back to car park and out again . Legs a bit tired by start

orienteering 45:00 [4]

Control collecting on Glen Affric. Very tough start up the north slope but great area and running improved higher up.

orienteering 45:00 [3]

Control collecting on Glen Strathfarrar. Spent 40 mins watching juniors through a couple of haggled controls and then headed west to pick up a loop. Tough on steep slopes but very technical :-)

orienteering 18:00 [3]

Collecting a few controls in Achnasoul. Lovely but tough underfoot

Thursday Jun 27, 2019 #

Wednesday Jun 26, 2019 #

Note

Walking round Copenhagen - about 3 hours, very, very hot.

Tuesday Jun 25, 2019 #

steady run 1:20:00 [3]

South of Skaili on E6. Parked in lay-by and ran up to west, headed south along a few tops then back towards car. Great views and mostly very pleasant running but legs feeling useless! Spotted dozens of discarded reindeer antlers, picked up a couple of the best :-)

Monday Jun 24, 2019 #

steady run 1:30:00 [3]

Steady run (plod...) up Tyverr near Hammerfest. Big dirt road all way to top and direct steep footpath down. Superb views of monstrously rocky hills and huge fjords and mountainsto theSW.
Seriously struggling but ground it out on the uphills.

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Decent length before, but legs feeling pretty empty and tired. After short jog with Nick B

orienteering race 1:00:00 [5]

MSGDay 3. Tough rocky ridge area. Really struggled physically from the start. A couple of long lags, maybe slightly poor line for part of 1-2 and definitely lost time on 8-9 - dropped too far left early on and had to climb to head for track to right of line. Also lost time on 7 due to not checking g description, my eye was drawn to black dot (not in centre of circle...) and I ignored the control I saw about 20m away......DOH
Ended up 2nd to Per S but 4-30 down and 2nd overall by 2-56. Shame not to hold on for a win but 3 really different terrains and a great atmosphere whole weekend. I’ll be back :-)

Saturday Jun 22, 2019 #

Note

Walk round rock carving trail at Alta museum - about 2 hours (for 3km). Legs tired at end.

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Warm up before race, plus warm down after

orienteering race 30:00 [5]

MSG day 2 middle distance, different area of map , greener and more broken. Felt heavy legged at warm up. First 2 controls uphill and tired then drifted off sloppy bearing on 3, lost 1 minute then fell leaving control. Bashed head, broke compass. Headed on feeling a bit dazed but OK on next 2 controls then over-corrected on 6 and didn’t get back on right line, 40 secs lost. Took it careful from here, safe lines and really focussing one direction from features. Grovel up last hill to last control! Finished second behind Per Spik. Still in lead overall - all to play for tomorrow... and it looks very rocky and technical from map and seeing terrain. Should be real fun!

Friday Jun 21, 2019 #

Note

Wander up Alta Bakken and the a longer walk up and round Komsa Gorravárri. Superb lump of rock with a little vegetation a few stunted trees and Lots of crags! Great views all round , over Alta and to the hills and moors to the south and also to the snow capped mountains to the north across the fjord. Out for 90 mins and saw 1 other person...

Note

Legs felt somewhat improved from yesterday and generally livelier.

orienteering race 50:00 [5]

Midnattsolgallopen Day 1 start at top of ski tow line so overall downhill - but still plenty of up! Really pleased with my performance, lost maybe 10 secs at 1st control then spiked everything. Not sure of my 2-3 route but fastest M55 so can’t have been too bad. Felt best running I have for ages :-) Not sure if rest, holiday, race, pre-race coffee was to be thanked for this (maybe all of them).
1st in M55 (but beaten by 3 M60s...)
Won a nice canvas bag-for-life ;-)

steady run 15:00 [3]

Jog/walk up ski tow to start... mostly walking tbh!

Thursday Jun 20, 2019 #

steady run 1:02:00 [3]

Up Store Raipas near Alta. Fantastic views and lovely going- short blaeberry and moss with lots of tiny scrub birch and willow. Legs felt pretty heavy - maybe hard Tuesday and travel yesterday?
Views to snow covered mountains to west and north - possibly even an ice-cap to north. Temperature perfect for running and no flies/mozzies at all :-)
Landscape is so huge and empty it’s amazing.

Wednesday Jun 19, 2019 #

Note

Travel all day and feeling pretty tired in legs. Managed to wander up to top of Floibanen for my lunch and then down again - had nearly 7 hours between flights. Still there are many worse places than Bergen for a stop-over!

Tuesday Jun 18, 2019 #

cycling intervals 24:00 [5]

Intervals at Lumphanan junction towards Crossroads. Windy - esp 2,3 &4 but felt strong esp on 5 & 6.

cycling 52:00 [3]

Out down drive, along A93 then out to Lumphanan junction and a wee spin to west and back to get it to 20 mins.
Back through Dess woods from DAP, legs OK on climb.

steady run 40:00 [3]

Cambus at Ben Preece run - yellow trail then onto Cnoc Dubh, down south side and back via night-race route. Very pleasant chat but a little quick at times :-)

Monday Jun 17, 2019 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Last session till Autumn, tough one with lots of strength - abs aching (Tuesday)!

Sunday Jun 16, 2019 #

orienteering 44:00 [4]

Glen Dye, contour only course that I planned for EC & KC, thought it looked nice and E keen to try to went and ran it. Lovely forest - running through it smiling at times. Such a great place to live and so lucky to have such marvellous forests on our doorstep.
Felt pretty tired after - must have been fairly well focussed!

steady run 10:00 [3]

Potties - out and back to check a bit of track for map update. Legs feeling well tired now!

Saturday Jun 15, 2019 #

orienteering 2:10:00 [3]

The Long-Leg west end of Glen Tanar to east end of Balfour. With E, RC, KN, DB, JW and (for a few hundred metres) MG.
Really pleasant chilled session, lots of walking on uphills (esp when heathery) and easy pace elsewhere. Undergrowth threatening but not yet fully up and out. Great line through the terrain, will do it again sometime. Not often you can run 10km straight line in 99% while forest on an O map and not cross a road! (at least in Scotland).
Seemed appropriate to do this on Jukola weekend :-)

Friday Jun 14, 2019 #

Note

Rest day.

Thursday Jun 13, 2019 #

steady run 27:00 [3]

Easy trot round Des with E & S. Legs feeling somewhat heavy - I assume after bike intervals - headwind meant I was probably pushing bigger gear (relatively) then on previous sessions.

Wednesday Jun 12, 2019 #

cycling intervals 24:00 [5]

Same session as previous weeks - 6x4+2. Strong headwind on ups today, so much reduced distance and struggle to get into correct gear.

cycling warm up/down 43:00 [3]

Shorter warm-up (short of time), felt fairly strong on climb back from DAP.

Tuesday Jun 11, 2019 #

Note

Surveying 6 hours. Legs and brain tired :-)

steady run 48:00 [3]

Glen Tanar, 2 Bridges loop steady with CM. Legs feeling OK.

Monday Jun 10, 2019 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Sunday Jun 9, 2019 #

Note

Jamie Stevenson Trophy, Kingussie. At start for Maroc team. All done great and Maroc won again for the 12th year in a row...
Thanks to all junior team members and all helpers and parents for their support and enthusiasm.

Saturday Jun 8, 2019 #

Intervals hills 10:00 [5]

5x2+1 on big Birse track. Decided to see how legs were - the answer is pretty decent.

steady run 1:15:00 [3]

Aboyne bridge to Birse to Carnferg, down Fungle. Felt fairly good the whole way and nothing too achy from legs after hills early on.

Friday Jun 7, 2019 #

Note

Scottish Schools festival, didn't feel like getting out after 10 hours start to finish. Chilled day at race and pleasant snooze on bus on way back :-)

Thursday Jun 6, 2019 #

steady run 36:00 [3]

Home to Aboyne along Deeside Way, legs felt a bit tired but strong and style felt better than often in past while.

orienteering 12:00 [3]

Hanging and collecting a few controls, nice simple session for after-school club in preparation for Scottish Schools tomorrow.

Wednesday Jun 5, 2019 #

steady run 33:00 [3]

With S & E, Dess Woods top gate then down to river bank and back up by fields. Pissing rain but legs felt OK and strong on hills.

Tuesday Jun 4, 2019 #

cycling intervals 24:00 [5]

6x4 on Lumphanan junction hill, same as last 2 weeks. Got much further this week - no wind and pumped up tyres, but also legs felt more comfortable at spinning - maybe just getting used to cycling.

cycling 56:00 [3]

Out and back to start point. Felt fairly good going uphill through Dess Woods on return, think cycling legs are coming...

steady run 52:00 [3]

Glen Tanar, Deeside Runners, joined in first 3 intervals, just easing things out a bit then cut off up steep hill and back through woods. Pleasant run once off steep descent (back feeling a bit tight).

Monday Jun 3, 2019 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session, felt fairly good throughout.

Sunday Jun 2, 2019 #

cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Dinnet - Cambus, over top and back via loch side. Cut out to road on a couple of sections - road tires not best on gnarly rocky bits!
Legs felt fine, mostly steady effort. With S, E, TH, RH & GH

Saturday Jun 1, 2019 #

steady run 2:25:00 [3]

Easter Balmoral to some remote cairns at west of estate - started on tracks then a lot of terrain and a couple of new hills and cairns for me. With S, BS & SR plus Maisie. Very pleasant run and weather stayed mild and dry, though a bit breezy on western ridge. Lots of nice running underfoot. Saw plenty of deer when coming off Ripe Hill. Lots of flowers - blue, pink, purple - must be before the deer eat them all...
