orienteering 15:00 [3]

Hanging controls for Talent Squad in Anagach - what a glorious forest!

Intervals hills 8:00 [5]

Short hill session at Talent Squad weekend - 8x1 with jog back (ca 70-75 secs between finish and start of next interval). Feeling a bit rough, but managed to survive session - cold still in head and throat but not gone to lungs yet.

steady run 30:00 [3]

warm-up and jog down hills, and back to house.

stretching 12:00 [1]

repeat run through with juniors.

Demonstrating stretches to Maroc Talent Squad.

Thursday Nov 28, 2013 #

Note

Rest day - head still stuffed up and nose blocked.

Wednesday Nov 27, 2013 #

Note

6 hours surveying - another bad night (or part of night!)

orienteering race 46:00 [5]

Deeside Night Cup round 1 - Bellwood. Good course from Andy T, lots of tricky controls. In control for much of course, but messed up 5/16 controls - always when I just drifted in without checking map and compass carefully enough.

steady run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Tuesday Nov 26, 2013 #

Note

7 hours surveying - head cold/virus - achey teeth at 4am...

Monday Nov 25, 2013 #

Wee run round Hill of Banchory - cold frosty morning but beautiful clear sunny skies.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

steady run 15:00 [2]

After-school athletics club, warm-up and various bits of running.

orienteering race 1:01:00 [5]

Forvie, Brown course. Not sure how things would work out - left calf had been tweaking in the morning and after some massage in the car it was tender to the touch at the event and felt a bit sore in warm-up. However once I started running I hardly felt it - a few little twinges but almost nothing! very strange.
Ran strongly to win brown course by a long way.... but brikke failed, so no timer - managed to work out to within a couple of mins due to sarah's time (I started approx 1 min ahead and finished at least 5 ahead). Both Sarah and Ewan had GPS watches on......... if I'd had one I could have used it as evidence for time and controls!
Anyway, pleased with race - strong (for most of the course) and O was pretty decent - a few wobbles in controls - and a bad route to 1st control - didn't check compass. Must remember to use it more once DNC starts - At night your compass is your only friend!

orienteering 31:00 [4]

collecting night-O markers, pushing quickly. left calf has a hot-spot.

steady run 53:00 [3]

With Sarah at Shooting Greens, down to river and back. Very pleasant, but left calf tweaking - not main muscle but surface muscle on inside of main body. Not painful to walk , slightly tender to touch, cold/hot in shower and will watch over next few days.

orienteering 20:00 [3]

Finished hanging controls for night-O

Note

2 hours surveying

Intervals 12:00 [5]

Lap of Dess Woods, 12 x 1+30'. Struggling to recover in 30 secs, but kept at it. Managed to get out in a gap between heavy showers. Cold and windy - hope it clears up a bit before DNC training this evening.....

orienteering 32:00 [3]

Hanging controls for night-O - in the dark, good fun and lovely evening in the woods with a trace of snow here and there. Ran out of time so need to do rest tomorrow.

Monday Nov 18, 2013 #

Note

5 hours surveying, nice bright day but a chilly breeze.

steady run 15:00 [2]

After-school athletics club - a bit of warm-up, some drills and sprints then lap of woods.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Sunday Nov 17, 2013 #

orienteering 1:00:00 [4]

Collecting controls - ran pretty hard as wanted to experience the area properly. Felt even better at speed than moving slowly.

Saturday Nov 16, 2013 #

Note

Sorting wee test event on Muir of Dinnet, had planned to collect controls after the event, but last runner didn't finish until nearly 3pm, so I'll do them tomorrow - hunger calls!
Lovely day - mild, bright, sunny - perfect for this time of year, runners certainly saw Muir of Dinnet at its best!

Friday Nov 15, 2013 #

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Feeling quite a lot better this morning so put on running kit to hang controls for tomorrow's test event on Muir of Dinnet. Felt OK running on flats and downs but really struggled on hills. Forest even better than when mapping it - bracken all dead and largely flat, should be pretty fast. Out for just over 75 mins - but this included taking photos of each site for post-event assessment of any damage or tracking-up.

Thursday Nov 14, 2013 #

Note

Surveying 3 hours - still not feeling great.

Wednesday Nov 13, 2013 #

Note

Not feeling 100% - rest

Note

Surveying 3.5 hours - stomach bug, feeling completely washed out but plodded round slowly and got some mapping done.

Monday Nov 11, 2013 #

cycling 1:30:00 [2]

With Sarah and Ewan round the new MTB trail at Glen Livet - 2 laps of the Blue run - very tired on first, slightly less tired on second. Feeling wiped out after it - last few days catching up.
Really enjoyed the route - nothing too technical but plenty of fast lumpy and twisty bits and great views of the hills and glens around the area.

steady run 1:07:00 [3]

Guiding for Running the Highlands at Balmoral - 10k race loop in reverse =plus an extra 2 km when I missed a junction due to chatting too much! Cruised first 3/4ers then things sped up on last 2 miles (after I mentioned the chance to run faster straight back to castle). Left leg a bit achy by end but nothing too bad at all.

orienteering 1:05:00 [3]

Control collecting at Inver event - northern and eastern group. Headed out on high track than picked up group along spine of hill - superb views north to Beinn A'nn and Beinn A'Bhuird - looked glorious with sun on snow. feeling pretty good after last 3 days - struggling in heather (but it is so deep I always do!). Still running OK on return by track to car park.
Need to take easier week to ensure no over-training.

steady run 2:15:00 [3]

Guiding for Running the Highlands at Balmoral - 16 miler - basically out west to near Invercauld Bridge and back with a loop of Ripe Hill on return. Felt good for most of it, but tired at end - largely energy shortage - I had to split my energy bar 4 ways!! Pleased to still be going well and smoothly by end - maybe exercise and circuits helping.

Friday Nov 8, 2013 #

steady run 55:00 [3]

Guiding for Running the Highlands at Balmoral. Usual Friday loop, pretty quick start but managed to throttle back on the climb and my group were a bit slower on the smaller tracks and downhills of the second half.
Shoulders a little tight and achy from circuits (and sweeping yard this morning!).

Thursday Nov 7, 2013 #

steady run 24:00 [3]

Steady trot round Aboyne before circuits - cold and needed most of it to get warmed up.

Circuits 1:00:00 [2]

Same as before - 7 stations, 3 laps, then ab work (lots of sit-ups). Left before stretching to pick Ewan up from Cubs.

Tuesday Nov 5, 2013 #

Intervals 20:00 [5]

10x2+1 on Lumphanan Road - aiming for quick cadence and smooth action. Tough - struggling by 7 and really hanging on for 9 & 10

steady run warm up/down 35:00 [3]

Over top track to DAP, back via Deeside Way.

Monday Nov 4, 2013 #

steady run 20:00 [3]

Very short run round Hill of Banchory before pilates - only to find class cancelled...
A bit of warm-up, then some drills, sprints and a lap of the woods at after-school athletic club.

Sunday Nov 3, 2013 #

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Hanging controls in Pannanich - much nicer weather - windy and cold but dry.

orienteering 28:00 [3]

Collecting controls in Pannanich - loop to top of hill - tough up hill but very enjoyable once there - and enough daylight to see the forest! Legs tired on climb and quads a bit tender on descent - probably Friday's descent of Lochnagar. Easy day or two then intervals.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Saturday Nov 2, 2013 #

steady run 1:25:00 [3]

Maroc run (though more Deeside Runners than Maroc) Glen Tanar, up to mill pond, up hill, then out on small paths to col over to DeeCastle, down to main Glen Tanar track and back over first hill. Very pleasant run - mostly with Alistair (running very well and easily).

steady run 25:00 [3]

Hanging controls for club training tomorrow - 4C, rain and semi-darkness in Pannanich, lovely.... Out for approx 80 minutes. Still got 12 to do in the morning - hopefully a bit dries/brighter than this afternoon.

Friday Nov 1, 2013 #

steady run 1:40:00 [3]

Had planned to do Lochnagar, but low cloud and wind on top meant a change of plan - hoped to get to top of Ladder and along to the Cuidhe Crom... However at the col the wind was coming around from the corrie in big lumps - so I decided to go up the Meikle Pap - got blown to the summit (though I didn't dare climb onto the tor at the top - or I'd have been blown over the other side). Struggled down into the wind (couldn't see for tears in my eyes) and descended by the tourist track. met plenty of people going up the hill - I doubt any reached the top!
Flet a bit tired and washed out on climb - not sure if due to intervals on Wednesday or just unfitness catching up.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Start of new attempt to be more disciplined in stretching regularly.
