Checking control sites at Corsedarder. Pleasant day and feeling strong in terrain, but lacking puff up the hills.... Probably need some more hill sessions - next week will be number 1 for the summer.

Dess Wood loop - first half with Sarah and the second half with Buzzie! Wise now so took a stick with me - he made a few dives when I was crossing up field, then checked me out at the gate to Neil's on my return. Feeling a bit tired and heavy legged, but going reasonably well.

Glen Tanar 12x1+1. Feeling terrible - seldom felt so poor during an intervals set - maybe lack of food, maybe dehydrated, just awful.

Travel all day - first took bus to airport at 0515, then drove from 0900 till 1400 to airport, flew back via Amsterdam. Home 0100 (Finnish time).... looooong day!

To east along river in Joensuu, mostly tracks and paths, some tarmac.

Did some strides and sprints towards end of run - wanted to turn legs over a bit quicker. Worked out OK and felt faster as I did more - think I did 10 x 40secs-1minute. Very humid - completely soaked by end, followed by cool shower.

Short part of course back to bus - pushed to see if I could... managed in parts but feeling very tired on hills.

Long run from accommodation in Joensuu - along edge of lake to west, got as far as canal then back - some slightly different routes, but mostly same tracks. Very pleasant (if a little humid and sticky).

New middle distance area (only 40 mins from Joensuu). Ran first and last parts of course. Very tough forest with low vis in many parts. Missed one control badly, all rest were clean and in control.

Long distance training - meaning lovely fast morraine forest. Enjoyed course, great runnable forest with subtle contours and lots of lovely big boulders.

O intervals at Tahkovaara. Struggling in terrain - and wore glasses (too lazy to put in lenses) which got steamed up and wet in rain, so took of half way through.
Good session on great area, but nothing for free - tough running, low vis in much and trying to stay ahead of GB guys....

Run to and from training and between interval sessions. Beaver dams and tracks on streams/lakes, but no sign of the beasts. 2 Cranes flew over during return - amazing noise - like talking or singing between them. Also saw a red squirrel on street tree outside building while going to breakfast and then a huge hare was feeding on grass between buildings in evening.

Still getting a couple of spasms in right buttock during o today. Lower back feeling pretty tight and achy, stretching helped to loosen it off. Less driving tomorrow so hopefully more recovery.

Training at Peravaara - nice middle distance course. Forest very pleasant but a bit heavy going for the state of my legs today - struggling to keep running over more than a couple of legs at a time. During my cut-off (5-10) I was mobbed by two small birds - obviously protecting a nest. Mosquitos at parking very vicious - small and stealth like, so biting before they were noticed, not nice! Hope I feel a bit more like pushing things tomorrow - O -intervals are the plan....

orienteering race 50:00 [5]

Jukola leg 4 for Scotland. 50.28 for 7.6 km - pleased, no misses, just a couple of wobbles and a few hesitations. Fastest time 38-54!
Dropped 4 places (87-91). Team 96th overall - fantastic result.
Terrain mostly flattish and easy technically, only had a few controls on more technical hill. Really sore legs by end - spasms in right buttock after - probably due to 2 nights sleeping on ground (lumpy....) in tent. Eased off a little after a sauna and walking around a while.
Followed by drive to Joensuu - 4 hours.... struggling by end.

Victory Hall through woods, railway line, woods along A93 and back via railway and loop of woods. Pleasant run but legs feeling tired and left buttock/groin tweaking a bit, as previously.

Deeside Runners Glen Tanar, 8x2+1 on 2 bridges circuit (reverse direction at Ewan's orders!). Wasn't sure what to expect as had felt dreadful all day - sore throat and tired. Sesion was a great one - fast and tough. Pleased to have forced myself to GT and done it.

Cycle from Linn of Dee car park to Derry Lodge and back (30/22).

Derry Lodge up track to Derry Cairngorm then up to Macdui and back over Carn a Mhaim. Superb day to start with - cloud had cleared by the time we reached Derry Lodge and was hot on climb up, but cloud bubbled up and we had shelter for most of the run. Wonderful day to be on the tops - great views in all directions from Macdui. Tough descent on spur by tailor's Burn then great track over Carn a Mhaim and down to Lairig Ghru path. Running OK at end - but lots of walking uphills during run os legs don't feel too hammered.

With Sarah from Invercauld car park, out on Loch Biulg track then cut left up Creag a Chait. Had ideas of going further but neither feeling up to the extra climb. Turned west and traversed round Meikle Elrick and over Little Elrick. Back through woods and tracks. Very pleasant run but feel dire for first 30 mins - head felt full of cotton wool.

Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival, went with Ewan in Aboyne Ac bus. Great day out - but the only cloudy area was south of the Forth!
Spent a lot of time wandering about chatting to various people. Took running kit but really no chance to go for a run.

Cambus warm up and down. feeling OK.

pace run 21:00 [4]

Did lap of Cambus course - started early and took steady pace round - working a bit (effort level 4) but avoiding real hard work on hills. Feeling OK, but slight niggle in left hip/groin/buttock - same as for a while now, hard to pinpoint it, but I suspect it might cause trouble on a long race.

orienteering race 1:13:00 [5]

Local event at Bogendreip. Brown course 8.8km..... Feeling tired in terrain on second leg and had to fight to keep lifting legs through any rough areas. No real errors but just feeling tired - like Friday, legs were missing top gear.

With Sarah and Ewan to Aboyne, left E at tennis and Sarah and I went up Glen Tanar, over at Braeloine (tough little hill there!) and back along railway line, picked up Ewan and back via MTB area in Bellwood - tried a couple of tame loops...... enough for me. Lots of youngsters giving it welly on jumps etc - great to watch but made me giddy thinking of trying to do it. Got caught in hail and rain storm at end - very wet up last hill from Tarland Burn.
