Note

"rest" day - best part of 6 hours grovelling in the foundations of the house putting in underfloor insulation with Graeme Guy. Lovely job if you can ignore the space (very, very little), the dust (lots) and the general discomfort (high). Anyway, done 90% of the flooring (and the remainder seems to be totally inaccessible without knocking down part of the foundations...... Hope it makes a difference next winter!

Skived stretching - too late and also aching from all the knocks/ awkward moving.

steady run 31:00 [3]

Dess wood loop, 9am run, but legs feeling surprisingly supple and no other aches around. But not very spritely up hills!

Note

7 hours putting loft and underfloor insulation in home... just as well it was a cool day - working in the roof was hot enough as it was!

Intervals intervals 20:00 [5]

5x4+2. Started sluggishly but going well by last 2

steady run warm up/down 32:00 [3]

Aboyne Academy along railway line to west, started intervals opposite Gary's house, nearly reached new car park at Boghead. Right hamstring insertion still a bit tender especially early on.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

good session - feeling strong and controlled. Ewan came along (he didn't want to go to the creche) and was perfect - quiet as a mouse, sitting in a corner of the room reading Beanos and watching the class.

Note

5 hours digging and barrowing and laying slabs..... my shoulders and back are feeling it!

Saturday Apr 25, 2009 #

steady run 40:00 [3]

Run from my parents - to Hazelhead along Den Burn, park and playing fields, back along burn to Johnston Gardens then up to quarry and back.

Friday Apr 24, 2009 #

steady run long 1:37:00 [3]

Creche to cistern track, left up small path behind Birsemore Hill, to kennels track, out to Fungle track and back up diagonal landrover track up Carn Ferg, directly down through heather and back down Fungle. Hazy cloudy day, but mild (16C). Feeling pretty good for day after intervals - proof, I think, that last week's tiredness was hill race and heavy duty gardening related.

Intervals intervals 10:00 [5]

Railway line, 5x2+1. First interval terrible, R hamstring sore at insertion point and had trouble pulling leg through quickly, eased off and going pretty well by last one.

steady run warm up/down 26:00 [3]

down to railway line and back - short of time so as little as possible while still doing the planned session.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Apr 22, 2009 #

steady run 30:00 [3]

Dess Wood loop - lovely sunny afternoon, scattering sheep and bleating lambs in the top field, escorted along the track to the field by a buzzard - must be nesting time again!
Feeling better than of late - I reckon the race on Sat11th and hard labouring shifting earth etc had done some fairly serious damage and I'm only just recovering.

Note

Survey Coull - 2 hours and finished (almost - still got some vegetation to check high up slope - need o find some air photos to sketch from)

stretching 15:00 [2]

Tuesday Apr 21, 2009 #

Note

surveying Coull - 6 hours, mostly sunny, with a couple of short sharp showers.

Intervals hills 12:00 [5]

12x1+1, left hill at Glen Tanar, good turn out - Robbie, Dan W, Sam, Peter, Finlay, Dan G, Dave H, Gary, etc etc - tough group! Never felt great, but kept plugging away - it must be doing some good.....

steady run warm up/down 44:00 [3]

Glen Tanar - usual warm up, hills up through plantation and back via Osprey track

Monday Apr 20, 2009 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

good session - but after 2 days off I should be OK!

steady run 31:00 [3]

Dess wood lap after Ewan in bed - a bit full of dinner, but managed OK - fantastic sunset - a huge orange/red ball slipping between cloud layers giving a fiery glow to the hills - wonderful.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Sunday Apr 19, 2009 #

Note

went round a white course with Ewan, then more gardening.

stretching 15:00 [2]

stretching 15:00 [2]

Note

day off running - had hoped to get one in late afternoon, but was too busy digging and shifting boulders.

Friday Apr 17, 2009 #

steady run 2:18:00 [3]

Glen Tanar - top car park out to foot of Mount Keen, then across new bridge and crossed bog up to high track, back in southern glen. Never comfortable, legs tired and hamstrings both a bit sore. A couple of sweeties kept me going. Glad to get it done. Now to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Thursday Apr 16, 2009 #

Note

Surveying Coull - 6.5hours. Even saw a few minutes of sun today! Found the biggest antler I've ever seen - got it home and Ewan grabbed it for his bedroom!

steady run 30:00 [3]

Dess Wood loop, feeling pretty sluggish, but enjoyed it nonetheless

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Apr 15, 2009 #

Note

Surveying Coull - more fences and felled areas... should reach the good bits tomorrow - I hope! 5.5hours

stretching 15:00 [2]

Tuesday Apr 14, 2009 #

Intervals intervals 12:00 [5]

Glen Tanar - half session as still tired from weekend and surveying. 2+1, 1+1 x4. Gary pushing me all the way, cut off at two bridges, right hamstring feeling a bit tender on 3rd set and definitely tender on last intervals.

steady run warm up/down 39:00 [3]

warm-up and down in Glen Tanar - nice to run in lovely surroundings

Note

Surveying Coull - revising old map (27 years old, so a few changes!!!)
3.5hours survey - drizzling and cold, so cut short at lunchtime and went home - the joys of surveying near home.

cycling 55:00 [3]

Glen Tanar cycle with Sarah and Ewan. Braeloine carpark - two bridges, back on south side to Tower of Ess and back up road to Braeloine. great cycle (apart from a couple of steepish ascents early on - my quads felt they were almost cramping) with Ewan on the tag-along. We've managed to sort the fastening - on about the 20th attempt - and his bike doesn't hang over at 45 degrees any more! Nice ride - mostly flattish and good surface, must do it again.

Note

several hours digging and barrowing earth in garden... back a bit stiff

Sunday Apr 12, 2009 #

Note

rest day - walk with Sarah and Ewan up Scolty, then various bits of gardening etc, legs starting to feel sore......

stretching 15:00 [2]

good stretch

Hill Race race 1:35:40 [5]

Clachnaben hill Race. Feeling very negative before start and dreadful on first road section. Gradually got into the race a bit on hill sections and good descent from Mount Shade, then hit forest road again and plodded back from there - losing 2 places and almost grinding to a halt on last 500m - food bonk?
overall better than expected and can probably do better in future with a better mental approach.

stretching 15:00 [2]

legs feeling surprisingly good....

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

warm up steady running and jogging. Warm down consisted of walking to the beer tent and getting 2 cups of very very good beer (Deeside Brewery and lots of yummy cakes). Do as I say not as I do!

Friday Apr 10, 2009 #

Note

rest day in preparation for hill race

mind you spent 2-3 hours chopping tree stumps.....

Thursday Apr 9, 2009 #

Intervals intervals 10:00 [5]

5x2+1 on railway line, feeling good and relaxed, but right buttock a bit tender, took first one easy and stretched into it gradually.

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

down to Dess Burn and across "bridge" and return by same route.

stretching 15:00 [2]

Wednesday Apr 8, 2009 #

steady run 45:00 [3]

Dess Wood loop and cowshit alley, return via bull-e-vard. Legs feeling pretty good, but other muscles aching from morning spend clearing lathe and plaster from room in house...

stretching 15:00 [3]

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009 #

Note

day off - still feeling washed out, hope I start to feel better soon!

Note

still very tired so had day off - no pilates as holiday.

orienteering race 1:31:00 [4]

SOL at Auchingarroch. Relentlessly grim - I was too tired physically to attack the course and too tired mentally to really care! Plodded round and didn't enjoy it. need a decent break next week to prepare for Clachnaben hill race.

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

slow run to start.

Saturday Apr 4, 2009 #

orienteering race 14:00 [5]

BOC sprint round 1 Steady start and pretty smooth O-ing. Course was tricky at start, then a cross-country race!
3rd (Dave Robertson and Neil Crickmore)

orienteering 13:00 [5]

BOC sprint round 2. Ran harder, but even less technical than round 1. 2nd on round, 3rd overall (1st Quentin, 2nd Dave R)

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

warm up/down for both rounds- not a lot of running (maybe too little?). Still feeling pretty tired after week's activities.

Friday Apr 3, 2009 #

Note

5 hours surveying at Bowanhill (first 3 on a quad bike which saved the legs but gave my hands a work out clinging on!) Afternoon was scorching - 18C. Very pleasant wandering around noting new additions to the area (roads, ponds etc).

Thursday Apr 2, 2009 #

steady run 50:00 [3]

steady run with Sarah at Shooting Greens - westward tracks to river bank at edge of forest, then downstream along river bank, cut back to tracks to east of big felled area. Fantastic views along the river - great wooded slopes and big river - felt very unlike Deeside - more like somewhere in Argyll or even Oregon! Added a few sprints and short surges on return up from river bank, but not feeling too lively.

stretching 15:00 [2]

usual

Wednesday Apr 1, 2009 #

Note

6 hours at Tentsmuir checking control sites and map comments for 6-Days. Again a little tired by the end....

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

started the control/map checking at a jog, but gave up when tiredness set in!
