steady run 20:00 [3]

Down Deeside Way, past Sally & Neville's, back over hill. Legs starting to feel a bit of bounce. Pleasant day with sun and no wind. Ground still wet in low lying areas, forestry machines have made a real mess of forest in places.

orienteering race 40:00 [5]

DNC Crathes (last race). Good clean run - apart from one bad route choice 1-2, Ross McM caught me and then I caught him back, he led till 3rd last, went to wrong hilltop and I sneaked ahead, just held him off to finish - tough work over last 600m.
Legs felt Ok early on but heavy and tired by half way, not firing on all cylinders yet!

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Felt good all session. Sunny by end :-)

steady run 10:00 [3]

AFter-school athletics club - warm up and lap of woods. Nice afternoon - warmth in sun.

orienteering race 1:09:00 [5]

Scolty, Brown course. Feeling tired from skiing and struggled physically from the start, one error (ca 2 mins at control 2) but really not feeling good running - I guess legs tired from skiing. Didn't have much fight in me mentally either - just plodded along. Pleased to be ahead of Claire and Alistair.

Note

Skiing at Glenshee - great day (after a fairly horrible shower late morning- hail, sleet ,rain and wind - real Scottish skiing weather!
Had some good runs to east in afternoon and got Ewan down a red (3 times).
skiing for 5.5 hours

Friday Feb 21, 2014 #

steady run 1:47:00 [3]

Steady plod from Rdeburn to home - started slow and got slower but never really in danger of having to stop or any mechanical problems - just legs heavy and tired. I'm wondering about a post-viral tiredness.

Thursday Feb 20, 2014 #

steady run 38:00 [3]

Slow lap of Dess Woods. Feeling fairly crap at start, but got into things and a bit better by end. Legs still tired and heavy.

Wednesday Feb 19, 2014 #

orienteering race 47:00 [5]

DNC Tilquhillie. Feeling pretty ropey - legs tired from skiing yesterday. Tried to take steady nad clean, mostly OK, but caught in windblow a few times..... I'm sure others were too! Feeling tired and heavy throughout race, glad to hold a narrow win over Jenny R.
Hope I'm in better shape next Wednesday for the final race at Crathes.

steady run warm up/down 16:00 [3]

Forced myself to do a decent length warm-up to try and get legs moving a bit.... only partly successful.

Tuesday Feb 18, 2014 #

Note

Skiing at Glenshee - downhill telemark kit. Snow was fantastic, shame the visibility was so low.... Good fun despite vis and business.
4.5 hours

Monday Feb 17, 2014 #

Note

Walk up Carn Ferg with Sarah and Ewan. Lots of snow, pleasant day if a little grey. Rain later, so good timing!
2 hours
Had thought of a wee run in afternoon but feeling tired from weekend so proper day off.

Sunday Feb 16, 2014 #

orienteering race 55:00 [5]

Achray South, CompassSport Cup. Blue Men course. 1st (by 30 secs over Dave R). Ran well early on - positive routes and moving steadily, but started missing once I met with Callum R and Keith R. Missed 10,11,12 - by maybe 1.30 in total. Run through Dounans Camp into the bobly oak area - suddenly very, very tired physically and mentally, struggled to keep going but focussed on each leg one at a time and got through it. Maybe food? didn't eat much after Night Champs and had normal sized breakfast in morning.
Anyway good weekend - 3 (4) races in 24 hours and still moving at end (just). Must be over cold now. Need to set some steady progressive training targets over the next few weeks to improve basic fitness.

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Jog to start and a few runs back and forwards to try to get legs moving.

stretching 12:00 [1]

Needed it!

orienteering race 16:00 [5]

Scottish Sprint Champs, Perth. Steady run until 2nd last and fell for trick trap - blocked off alleys. 10th over 40. Felt OK running, but didn't go flat out, too tricky for that!

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

orienteering race 45:00 [5]

Scottish Night Champs, Kinnoull. Started v early (so as to be back to shadow Ewan). Missed no2 - felt more climb to it than on map. Caught by Fraser P - had him round me rest of course. Ran v well till 2nd last when I raced down the hill to try to drop him and missed badly -misread paths and ended up way too far right, then to add insult to injury I missed control in circle and he sneaked away and finished a couple of seconds ahead - not pleased!

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Decent warm-up for night-O - needed it, legs very tired and tight.

orienteering race 14:00 [5]

Sahdowing Ewan round his night- O course. He ran like a bat out of hell and left me behind on many legs (luckily he stopped at each control to check next leg and I was able to catch up). Felt like another race to me...... getting old!

Friday Feb 14, 2014 #

Note

Walk on south side of Loch Voil from hostel - pleasant forest road but grim spruce forest, reached uncrossable gorge and explored the side of this for a while then back along forest road. Out for about 2 hours. Woke up still feeling washed out - but started feeling better about half way through walk. Not sure what caused it - but pretty horrible!

Thursday Feb 13, 2014 #

Note

Wlak in Glen Doll - 2 hours. Woke up feeling completely washed out - not sure if the DNC cold or food problem. Bed straight after tea - about 7-30!

Wednesday Feb 12, 2014 #

steady run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Bit of a warm up and down at Glen Dye - legs feeling pretty ropey.

orienteering race 43:00 [5]

DNC Glen Dye, weather cleared and rain disappeared by the time I reached the race - much nicer than an hour before when the sleet and snow was pelting down!
Feeling pretty washed pout - cold still having an effect. Decided to go for a steady clean run - and pretty much achieved it. Lost at least a minute at 6 - control in depression to north and then hesitant at last few controls - felt I was losing focus badly. but didn't miss anything there. Pleased with performance - just need to wait and see who else goes clean. Course was mostly short legs - which was good in that it meant it was easier to stay focussed, but others will get the same benefit.......

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014 #

Note

Another recovery day - chest getting better but not quite there yet.

Monday Feb 10, 2014 #

steady run 16:00 [3]

Easy jog at Hill of Banchory - lungs not 100% but reasonable - only started coughing when into dance centre - warm air!

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session - amazing how not running makes pilates easier! I guess muscles are not so tired as normal.

Sunday Feb 9, 2014 #

steady run 10:00 [3]

Run to car from start to pick up maps for control collecting (better than doing it all myself!).
2 hours coaching - a bit chilly but not too bad and even a blink or two of sun later on.

Saturday Feb 8, 2014 #

steady run 50:00 [3]

Hanging controls in Tilquhillie for club training - light rain and a bit wet in places underfoot - but not as bad as expected.

Recovery day

Tuesday Feb 4, 2014 #

steady run 1:00:00 [3]

Hanging controls on Muir of Dinnet for DNC. Legs OK but coughing desperately and struggling to breathe. A bit wet - in some places all depressions are ponds, but on slopes the ground is remarkably dry - I guess its just gravel and rocks!

Monday Feb 3, 2014 #

Note

Cold still bad, avoided pilates.

Sunday Feb 2, 2014 #

Note

Cold - could explain the cough of the past few days and feeling slightly crap the past couple of mornings.

Saturday Feb 1, 2014 #

steady run 1:38:00 [3]

Cambus over drove round and round east of Loch Kinord, back over Cnoc Dubh. With Maroc group - very pleasant run (if a little fast at the start). Feeling OK for most of run, ribs still aching intermittently (and sore afterwards), left knee fine on tracks.
