Techniques were working well with only one real error but fell foul of artificial blocks (marked with red X on the map). Failed to see them twice and had to backtrack. Back in contention by the last leg but missed another block on the way to the final control (should have seen this one) loosing a further 90s.
Finished 3rd behind two french runners but ahead of all the locals.

More training in the terrain.
This was mad but great fun, a steeper even more intricate area with lots of covered (dark) areas where you had to come out to read the map. Went ok, picking up techniques to use.

Good little sprint on a new area (Unusually correct length of 12-15 min winning time). A bit sloppy loosing 1minute combined at controls 11& 12 but well beaten by Colin Williams.

No kites on some of the controls in a rough open area. The organiser was telling everyone on the long course but forgot to tell me! This combined with some of them being slightly out of position made the stakes quite difficult to find. Lost in excess of 1 min 30s looking for two of them thinking that they had been thrown into the undergrowth. Good training for dealing with things that go wrong.
Nice little run in a nice area and the sun was out. (Cloudy all day at home)

Pwll Du:
Tough open area.
Managed to underperform again on this one.
Didn’t read the CD on 3 and was looking on top of the spur rather that at the foot. 90s lost
Was careful and had a good AP at 7 (knoll) but must have been 5m too far as missed the control, kept going to try to find it eventually coming back to the knoll and dropping into it. 4 mins lost.
Would have finished just outside the top 10 but messed up again at the 2nd last control. The feature was a re-entrant and I read the map as a spur with a shallow re-entrant on the south face. I couldn’t find this feature and ignored a control that appeared to be in the correct place.
When I returned to the same place I read the control number and it was correct. The feature was a long thin re-entrant not a spur. A further 3 mins lost.
A disappointing 18th place again.

Note

Have now underperformed at the Scottish Sprint, British Middle & Long and JK Middle & Long.
I need to analyse the errors and work out where I am going wrong.

Clydach Terrace:
Nice open area with lots of features and variable runability.
Held the pace back a bit and tried to be careful but still had a couple of silly errors. Lost 2 minutes at 7 when I went safe to the path but never found it.
Lost 2.30 at 10 rushing and trying to get away from another competitor (on a very easy short leg - no Compass - direction wrong).
More time lost running straight through a marsh when I should have used the unmapped path to the south.
18th well below where I should be.

Swansea Uni. 50% urban, 50% parkland.
One 20s error in the park and a bit of confusion at some last minute building work. Good enough for a bronze medal and was in contention for silver.
47s behind Quinten, 13s behind Tim.
Held the pace back a bit especially in the complex wooded area in the park.

Sprint style urban race with intricate sections split by long route choice legs. Good courses as usual for this event. I was in a fight for 2nd in the competition with 3 other runners with Dirk Goosen a very good Belgium M55 out in front. All was going to plan until I caught the runner in front about half way round and couldn't drop him. I ended up trying too hard missing a gateway and getting confused dropping 1 minute into 19 and another minute out. It turns out that the runner I had caught was one of my rivals (Tim Weber from Denmark) and that if I had stuck with the plan I would have finished an easy 2nd in the competition.
Finished 5th MSV.
Lesson learned? - Who knows!

I have been throwing away good results recently by making big mistakes on easy legs so stepped back the pace for these races to sort this out.
