(rest day)

Spent the day first on the phone determining the location of our bags and arranging to have them flown closer to us then traveling to the airport in Palmerson North to pick them up. We didn't want to take a chance that they would be able to them to us in time to get them and still make the meet. Rick's writing a letter to Air NZ.

Despite not having luggage and O stuff we managed to get to the last day of the Pre-Oceania event. Bought new compasses after convincing ourselves that we couldn't use ours. Rather tough orienteering 1:75 w/ 2.5m contours. I ended up mispunching on the second control (chalk that one up to jet lag) and then skipping #3 (couldn't find it...duh...I was going from the wrong point, chalk that one up to stupidity), tried 3 different attacks on #8-208 but kept finding 210, even found #9 and still ended up at 210...finally turned around and spotted it (that had to be jet lag), skipped going to #9 a 2nd time and headed to 10 and 11. On the way to 12 I realized that I would pass right through the #3 area so I made another attempt to find it...ended up in the same wrong place. It was about then that I noticed that the map was 1:75 (jet lag again?...or was it dehydration by that time?) and I had been out quite a while so I skipped to #13, found it after overshooting slightly and managed to find the last 3 controls and the finish. I certainly hope that I've learned something from this...
